  • The best available solution to predict the fatigue life of structural steels is the implementation of EPFM approach based on the principles and techniques of elasto plastic fracture mechanics. To predict the fatigue life, the conventional Paris law has been modified by substituting the range of J-value denoted by ΔJ for ΔK that is calculated by the proposed p-version model. The proposed P-version finite element model is formulated by the incremental theory of Plasticity that consists of the constitutive equation fur elastic-perfectly plastic materials, Tresca/von-Mises yield criteria, and associated flow rule. The experimental fatigue test is conducted with five UP(Center Clucked Panels) specimens to validate the accuracy of the p-version finite element model. Also, the results obtained by LTM approach have been compared with those by EPFM approach.

  • Elasto-plastic finite element analysis was performed for a burnishing process for the inner surface of a cylinder by mandrel. Three different configurations in roughness of the inner surface, two different thicknesses of the cylinder wall, and five different diameters of the mandrel were selected for the present investigation. Although the surface roughness was improved with the increase of the mandrel diameter, defects of folding occurred as the mandrel diameter exceeded certain limits. Improvements in the surface roughness, distributions of effective strain, effective stress and residual circumferential stress, and the variation of mandrel force were also investigated.

  • In order to avoid pathological mesh dependency in finite element modelling of strain localization, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a yield function depending on the Laplacian of the equivalent plastic strain is implemented in a 4-node quadrilateral finite element with one integration point based on a mixed formulation derived from Hu-Washizu principle. The evaluation of the Laplacian is based on a least square polynomial approximation of the equivalent plastic strain around each integration point. This non local approach allows to satisfy exactly the consistency condition at each integration point. Some examples are treated to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.

  • The high precision analysis by the p-version of the finite element method are fairly well established as highly efficient method for linear elastic problems, especially in the presence of stress singularity. It has been noted that the merits of p-version are accuracy, modeling simplicity, robustness, and savings in user's and CPU time. However, little has been done to exploit their benefits in elasto-plastic analysis. In this paper, the p-version finite element model is proposed for the materially nonlinear analysis that is based on the incremental theory of plasticity, the associated flow rule, and von-Mises yield criteria. To obtain the solution of nonlinear equation, the Newton-Raphson method and initial stiffness method, etc are used. Several numerical examples are tested with the help of the square plates with cutout, the thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure, and the center cracked plate under tensile loading. Those results are compared with the there cal solutions and the numerical solutions of ADINA software.

  • The analysis of thermally induced stresses in engineering structures is a very important and necessary task with respect to design and modeling of pressurized containers, heat exchangers, aircrafts segments, etc. to prevent them from failure and improve working conditions. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate elasto-plastic thermal stresses and deformations in a thin annular plate embedded into rigid container. To this end, analytical research devoted to mathematically and physically rigorous stress/strain analysis is performed. In order to evaluate the effect of logarithmic thermal gradients, commonly applied to structures which incorporate thin plate geometries, different thermal parameters such as temperature mismatch and varying constraint temperature were introduced into the model of elastic perfectly-plastic annular plate obeying the von Mises yield criterion with its associated flow rule. The results obtained may be used in sensitive to temperature differences aircraft structures where the thermal effects on equipment must be kept in mind.

  • A research program was initiated at the University of Colorado at Boulder to develop computational models that can be used for seismic risk assessments. To assess the overall performance of bridge structures including the nonlinear effects of bridge piers, the research focused on two levels of capabilities, i.e. global and local pier levels. A 3-D concrete model was used to evaluate the behavior of individual piers under combined axial, bending, and shear loadings using 3-D finite element analysis. Whereby the response curve reached the peak strength of the R/C column under the constant axial and monotonically increasing lateral loads. Experimental results on reinforced concrete bridge piers, which were obtained at the University of California at San Diego were used to validate the seismic performance of bridge piers at the two levels, globa1 and local.

  • In the present study, the finite strip analysis of a box girder to simulate a ship's hull model is carried out to investigate its inelastic post-buckling behavior and to predict its ultimate flexural strength. Residual stresses and initial geometrical imperfections are both considered in the combined material and geometrical nonlinear analysis. The von-Mises yield criterion and the Prandtl-Reuss flow theory of plasticity are applied in modeling the elasto-plastic behavior of material. The Newton-Raphson iterative process is also employed in the analysis to achieve convergence. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data. The effects of some material and geometrical parameters on the ultimate strength of the structure are also investigated.

  • LMFBR(Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor) vessel is operated under the high temperatures of 500-550.deg. C. Thus, transient thermal loads were severe enough to cause inelastic deformation due to creep-fatigue and plasticity. For reduction of such inelastic deformations, Y-piece structure in the form of a thermal sleeve is used in LMFBR vessel under repeated start-up, service and shut-down conditions. Therefore, a systematic method for inelastic analysis is needed for design of the Y-piece structure subjected to such loading conditions. In the present investigation, finite element analysis of heat transfer and inelastic thermal stress were carried out for the Y-piece structure in LMFBR vessel under service conditions. For such analysis, ABAQUS program was employed based on the elasto-plastic and Chaboche viscoplastic constitutive equations. Based on numerical data obtained from the analysis, creep-fatigue damage estimation according to ASME Code Case N-47 was made and compared to each other. Finally, it was found out that the numerical predictio of damage level due to creep based on Chaboche unified viscoplastic constitutive equation was relatively better compared to elasto-plastic constitutive formulation.

  • The aim of the present paper is to develop a computer program predicting ultimate fracture strength of initially cracked structure under monotonically increasing external loads. For this purpose, two kinds of 3-D isoparametric solid elements, one 6-node wedge element and another 8-node brick element are formulated along the small deformation theory. Plasticity in the element is checked using von Mises' yield criterion. Elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is calculated taking account of strain hardening effect. If the principal strain at crack tip which is one nodal point exceeds the critical strain dependin on the material property, crack tip is supposed to be opened and the crack tip node which was previously constrained in the direction perpendicular to the crack line is released. After that, the crack lay be propagated to the adjacent node. Once a crack tip node is fractured, the energy of the newly fractured node should be released which is to be absorbed by the remaining part. The accumulated reaction force which was carried by the newly fractured node so far is then applied in the opposite direction. During the action of crack tip relief force, since unloading may be occured in the plastic element, unloading check should be made. If a plastic element unloads, elastic stress-strain equation is used in the calculation of the stiffness matrix of the element, while for a loading element, elasto-plastic stress-strain equation is continuously used. Verification of the computer program is made comparing with the experimental results for center cracked panel subjected to uniform tensile load. Also some factors affecting ultimate fracture strength of initially cracked plate are investigated. It is concluded that the computer program developed here gives an accurate solution and becomes useful tool for predicting ultimate fracture load of initially cracked structural system under monotonically increasing external loads.
