  • Slope stability is an important issue ill civil engineering works or in open pit mines where both economy and efficiency is required. These are the long-term stability problems which depend on the change of physical properties under a certain weather condition. These can also result in progress of weathering which can change mechanical or hydro-geological properties of rock mass considerably. In this study, weathering in nature was simulated by freeze-thaw test and Soxhlet test which represent mechanical and chemical weathering respectively. Measured were elastic wave velocities, absorption rate, volume change. Uniaxial compression strengths before and after the weathering tests were also measured. The change in weight and volume of the specimens were not clearly related to the weathering process, but P, S wave velocities were clearly decreased as weathering progresses. For some class of rocks, P-wave velocity was increased probably because of the saturation due to improved connectivity of the pre-existing pores. Based on the test results, stability of the slopes were analyzed using FLAC$\^$2D/. Due to the reduced strength parameters, the factors of safety were decreased for the selected sites.

  • It is well recognized recently that ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used methods of nondestructive evaluation to characterize material properties of nonconventional engineering materials. Therefore it is very important to understand physical phenomenon on propagation behavior of elastic wave in these materials, which is directly associated with ultrasonic signals in the test. In this study, the theoretical analysis on multi-scattering of harmonic elastic wave due to the particulate with interface between matrix and fiber in metal matrix composites(MMCs) was done on the basis of Lax's quasi-crystalline approximation and extinction theorem. SiC particulate (SiCp) reinforced A16061-T6 composite material was chosen for this analysis. From this analysis, frequency dependences of phase velocity and amplitude attenuation of effective plane wave due to the change of volume fraction of SiC particulate were clearly found. It was also shown that the interface condition between matrix and fiber in MMCs gives a direct effect on the variation of phase velocity of plane wave in MMCs.

  • In order to investigate the correlation of sedimentary rock properties. specific gravity, porosity, water content, sonic wave velodty, and point4oad strength index of core samples of limestones, sandstones and shales were measured. The relationships between density and velocity show $V_p=16300d-38719.3,{\;}V_s1896.4d-29225.1$ of regression equation for sandstones and $Vp=4085d-10264.8,{\;}V_s=3519d-7841.3$ for shales and <$Vp=4085d^2-20747d+303,{\;}V_s=3899d^2-21442d+318$ for limestones. Seismic wave velocity of shales which have high density is lower than that of sandstones, and this seems to be an effect of bedding in shale. P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity of limestones, sandstones and shales show the linear relationships as a whole. The regression equations are respectively calculated V_s=0.26V_p+1041.6m/sec,{\;}V_s=0.43V_p+424.2m/sec,{\;}and{\;}Vs=0.51V_p+261.9m/sec$ and the correlation coefficients of the velocity show r= 0.86 in sandstones, r= 0.75 in limestones and r=0.86 in shales. According to the point4oad strength test for limestones, point4ord strength anisotropy was not so dear even though the specimens show generally the banded structure. Variations of dip angle of bedding whihin the range $30^{\circ}-60^{\circ}$ does not have much influence upon the diametral strength index and axial strength index. From the result of point load test, P-wave velocity increases with point4ord strength index but the regression equations are $V_p=98.5lI{s_d}+4082.1m/sec,{\;}V_p=106.41{s_a}+3954m/sec$ and their correlation coefficient is low.

  • In this study, seismic elastic wave and dynamic elastic modulus properties are investigated by down-hole seismic tests that were applied to the 11 gneiss area. The research results show that the realtionship between the two properties are $V_s=0.5589{\times}V_p$ in gneiss. The relationship between the two properties are separated into two groups. Group 1 is influenced mainly by the specific gravity of rock, but group 2 is influenced mainly by the joint aperture. As weathering progresses, group 1 clearly shows a decreasing tendency. In fresh and slightly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed in linear line but in moderately-highly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed curve as a quadratic function. Correlations between $V_s$ and dynamic elastic modulus are analyzed similar with a $V_p$ case.

  • To investigate the engineering properties of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area. The laboratory tests such as absorption test, specific gravity test, permeability test, Schmidt hammer test, elastic wave test and uniaxial compressive testwere carried out for the collected rock samples. The absorption, the specific gravity, the permeability, the elastic wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strengthwere investigated and analyzed as the results of these tests. As the result of regression analysis for the relationship between the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test and the uniaxial compressive strengths from uniaxial compressive test, especially, estimation equations were proposed using the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test. Therefore, the simple method to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength was provided.

  • Soils are commonly unsaturated in the near surface. The stiffness of soils is affected by the amount of air and water. The objective of this study is to evaluate the porosity of the unsaturated soils by using the elastic waves including compressional and shear waves. The elastic waves are measured at different degrees of saturation by controlling the matric suction. Thus, the unsaturated soils are characterized at different levels of the matric suction. Shear and compressional waves are measured by using the bender elements and the piezo disk elements, respectively. Both transducers are installed on the walls of the rectangular cell. The unsaturated soils are prepared by using uniform size sands and silts. Test results show that both compressional and shear wave velocities change according to the matric suction. The elastic modulus, the shear modulus, and the Poisson's ratio are estimated based on the measured elastic wave velocities. In addition, the void ratio of the unsaturated soils estimated using elastic wave velocities matches well with the volume based void ratio. This study demonstrates that the elastic waves can be effectively used for the characterization of unsaturated soils.

  • In order to offer some fundamental data for recycling the excavated rocks, the component and mechanical characteristics was investigated for the excavated rocks, by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, strength test, slacking test and abrasion test were performed. It appeared that the unconfined compressive strength and the elastic wave velocity were the highest in the sound rock. The dissipation rate by stability tests was found to be high in the case of the slacking index of 98% because of more bedding and more clay minerals. The apparent specific gravity of some crushed aggregate was decreased because they included easily weathered minerals while both the absorption and the abrasion were increased. The results in this study were expected to be useful for recycling the excavated rocks as a concrete aggregate.

  • A stainless steel has high corrosion resistance because of nickel in material, so it is used as materials for transportation and storage of hydrogen. In this study, TIG(tungsten ingot gas) welding was carried out on the stainless steel using the storage vessel of hydrogen. The microscopic structures at each region of TIG welded material such as HAZ, weld and base metals using optical microscope were observed. And the damage behavior of stainless steel that underwent the hydrogen charging using nondestructive evaluation was also studied. Ultrasonic test, which is the most generalized nondestructive technique, was applied to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonic wave and mechanical properties at each zone of TIG welded stainless steel. The velocity and attenuation coefficients of ultrasonic wave didn't show a remarkable difference at each region of welded stainless steel. However, the attenuation coefficient was the highest at the weld zone when hydrogen charged stainless steel. In addition, acoustic emission test was also used to study the dynamic behavior of stainless steel experienced both hydrogen charging and weld. Lots of AE event at elastic region of stress-strain curve were occurred both the hydrogen charged specimen and the free specimen.

  • In this article, a novel propagation formulation of Rayleigh waves in a compressible isotropic half-space with impedance boundary condition is proposed by embedding the normal stress. In a two-dimensional case, it is assumed that a design boundary is free of normal traction and a shear traction depends on linearly a normal component of displacements multiplied by frequencies. Therefore, impedance boundary conditions affect the normal stress, where the impedance parameters correspond to dimensions of stresses over velocity. On the other hand, vanished impedance values are traction-free boundary conditions. The main purpose of this article is to present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of a Rayleigh wave formulation relying on secular equation's mathematical analyses. Its velocity varies along with the impedance parameters. Moreover, numerical experiments with different values for the velocity of Rayleigh waves are carried out. The present Rayleigh waves study is a fundamental step in analyzing the cause and effect of physical states such as building or structure damages resulting from natural dynamics. The results of the study generate a basic design formulation theory to test the effects of Rayleigh waves affecting structures when an earthquake occurs. The presence and uniqueness of the proposed formulation is verified by mutual comparisons of several numerical examples.

  • A systematic laboratory compaction testing was performed with the laboratory seismic measurements of the compacted specimens sampled from various compaction fills and was supplemented with in-situ seismic testing to investigate the effects of compaction energy on the elastic wave velocities of the railway roadbed materials. The both variances of the compressive and shear wave velocities with moisture content curve ($V_p$-w and $V_s$-w curves) are similar to the general trend of the density-moisture content curve(${\gamma}_d$-w curve). At the wet side of optimal moisture content (OMC), either $V_p$ or $V_s$ does not significantly increase, which is well reflecting the no gaining in density with the increasing compaction energy exceeding modified-D compaction effort. $V_p$ increases linearly with ${\gamma}_d$ at the dry side of OMC, while it does exponentially at the wet side. The in-situ wave velocities were found to be influenced by the level of confinement and $V_s$ was more sensitive to compaction energy than $V_p$.
