Active Gurney Flap Design Modification for High Speed Operation and Natural Frequency Estimate (고속 운영을 위한 능동거니플랩 설계 변경 및 고유진동수 예측)

  • Working displacement variation by elastic deformation of active Gurney flap which was operated on high frequency was observed. Flap-wise natural frequency was lower than mode analysis result and hinge boundary condition was identified to be the cause through the simple modal test. Design modification for increasing natural frequency was conducted for minimizing the elastic deformation at maximum 35 Hz operating condition which was design requirement condition. Brass bushing was applied instead of rotating bearing for gap minimization and Gurney flap design modification was conducted to increase of the flap-wise natural frequency. Design modification effect was validated by natural frequency comparison with mode analysis result and modal test result of design modification model.

  • A general structural model, which is an extension of the Vlassov theory, is developed for the analysis of composite rotor blades with elastic couplings. A comprehensive analysis applicable to both thick-and thin-walled composite beams, which can have either open- or closed profile is formulated. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and transverse shear deformations. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to account for the shear stress distribution in the shell wall. The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correction factors are obtained in closed form as part of the analysis. The resulting first order shear deformation theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The theory is validated against experimental results for various cross-section beams with elastic couplings.

  • This study presents computational analysis of aerodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional airfoil sections with elastic flap attached at the trailing edge. EDISON_CFD was utilized to simulate the incompressible turbulent flow around the foil and MIDAS_IT was employed to estimate the deflection of the flap under the pressure loading. Using iterative procedure, the terminal deflection was estimated and the resulting lift-drag ratio indicates that the favorable effect of the flap is expected within certain amount of angle of attack.

  • A patient underwent reconstruction of skin and soft tissue using V-Y advancement of a superior ulnar collateral artery perforator flap after resection of the scar tissue on the upper arm. Successful flap healing was observed without complications. The medial side of the upper arm is an ideal donor site because of its thin, elastic, and hairless skin, resulting in a well-hidden scar. The elasticity of the medial side of the upper arm allows primary closure after flap elevation. The superior ulnar collateral artery perforator flap is an option for reconstruction of the upper arm.

Aeroelastic Stability Analysis of Hingeless Rotor Blades with Composite Flexures

  • The flap-lag-torsion coupled aeroelastic behavior of a hingeless rotor blade with composite flexures in hovering flight has been investigated by using the finite element method. The quasisteady strip theory with dynamic inflow effects is used to obtain the aerodynamic loads acting on the blade. The governing differential equations of motion undergoing moderately large displacements and rotations are derived using the Hamilton's principle. The flexures used in the present model are composed of two composite plates which are rigidly attached together. The lead-lag flexure is located inboard of the flap flexure. A mixed warping model that combines the St. Versant torsion and the Vlasov torsion is developed to describe the twist behavior of the composite flexure. Numerical simulations are carried out to correlate the present results with experimental test data and also to identify the effects of structural couplings of the composite flexures on the aeroelastic stability of the blade. The prediction results agree well with other experimental data. The effects of elastic couplings such as pitch-flap, pitch-lag, and flap-lag couplings on the stability behavior of the composite blades are also investigated.

  • In this paper, the activities carried out within the EU funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI GRA) Project and aimed at developing a morphing flap, are illustrated. The reference device is a regional aircraft single slotted flap, enhanced with deforming capabilities to obtain improved hyper-lift performance. The design started with the identification of the internal architecture, intended to allow camber variations. A concentrated-hinge architecture was selected, for its ability to fit different curvatures and for the possibility of easily realizing an "armadillo-like" configuration, then avoiding the use of a complicate deformable skin. The flap layout is made of segmented ribs, elastically hinged each other and span-wise connected by conventional spars. Relative rotations of the rib elements are forced by SMA structural actuators, i.e., cooperating in the external loads absorption. Super-elastic SMA are used to make up recovery elastic elements, necessary to regain the original shape after activation. These further elements in turn contribute to the overall flap rigidity. After assessing the hinge number and the size of the SMA active and passive elements, the advanced design phase was dealt with. It was aimed at solving manufacturing issues and producing the executive drawings. The realized demonstrator was finally tested in lab conditions to prove its functionality in terms of whether target shape actuation or attained shape preservation under loads. On the basis of the numerical results and the experimental outcomes, precious hints were obtained for further developments of the concept.

Pharyngoesophageal Reconstruction Using Modified Jejunomesenteric Composite Free Flap (변형된 공장-장간막 복합 유리피판을 이용한 인두식도 재건)

  • Purpose: The jejunal free flap is the most standard and reliable procedure of reconstruction of the circumferential pharyngoesophageal defect because it provides pliable, elastic, secreting mucosa and posses reliable vascular anatomy. In this report, the authors introduce the modification of jejunal free flap for decreasing the complications in fatty complicated patients. Method: After harvesting the jejunum with mesentery and mesenteric vessels, both ends of jejunum were excised remaining the mesenteric portion. The jejunal portion of this composite flap was placed to reconstruct esophagopharyngeal defect area and the mesenteric portion was used to obliterate the dead space at paratracheal region and to cover the vital structure and the vascular anastomotic region. Result: A 72 year-old man with recurrent hypopharyngeal cancer who had about 15 cm sized circumferential pharyngoesophageal defect after total pharyngectomy was reconstructed with jejunomesenteric composite free flap without any complications. Conclusion: The mesenteric flaps at both side of jejunomesenteric composite free flap provide the advantages that could obliterate dead space, that could provide cover for the vital cervical vascular structure in case of vascularity was compromised due to previous radiation therapy, and that could preserve as much vascularity at both ends of jejunal flap as possible.

  • 선행 연구에서 블레이드 뒷전에 탄성 플랩이 장착되면 받음각에 따라 양력의 증가가 항력의 증가보다 상대적으로 더 커지게 되어 전체적인 양항비(앙력과 항력의 비)가 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. 본 논문에서는 선행의 연구를 참조하여 플랩의 길이가 변함에 따라서 양력과 항력의 변화를 비교하였다. 블레이드의 종류와 플랩의 제원은 현재 이용되는 수직축 풍력 발전기의 제품과 동일하게 사용하였다. EDISON_CFD와 MIDAS_IT를 이용하여 플랩이 장착된 블레이드 주변의 유체 유동을 해석하고, 플랩의 상하변위를 계산하였다. 이 과정을 반복 수행하여 플랩의 거동을 분석하고 플랩의 길이와 받음각에 따른 양항비를 비교하여 이전보다 효율적인 플랩을 설계하였다.

Finite Element Structural Analysis of Open-Section Composite Beams Considering Transverse Shear (전단변형을 고려한 개방형 단면 복합재료 보의 유한요소 구조해석)

  • In this paper, a finite element structural analysis for thin-walled open-section composite beams with elastic couplings has been performed. The analysis includes the effects of transverse shear across beam sections, torsion warping and constrained warping. Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to obtain the beam st illness coefficients The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correct ion factors are obtained as part of the analysis. The resulting theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The static response has been validated against finite element predict ions, closed form solutions, and experimental data for rectangular sol id and I-beams with elastic couplings. The free vibration results are also compared with available literature.

A SMA-based morphing flap: conceptual and advanced design

  • In the work at hand, the development of a morphing flap, actuated through shape memory alloy load bearing elements, is described. Moving from aerodynamic specifications, prescribing the morphed shape enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the flap, a suitable actuation architecture was identified, able to affect the curvature. Each rib of the flap was split into three elastic elements, namely "cells", connected each others in serial way and providing the bending stiffness to the structure. The edges of each cell are linked to SMA elements, whose contraction induces rotation onto the cell itself with an increase of the local curvature of the flap airfoil. The cells are made of two metallic plates crossing each others to form a characteristic "X" configuration; a good flexibility and an acceptable stress concentration level was obtained non connecting the plates onto the crossing zone. After identifying the main design parameters of the structure (i.e. plates relative angle, thickness and depth, SMA length, cross section and connections to the cell) an optimization was performed, with the scope of enhancing the achievable rotation of the cell, its ability in absorbing the external aerodynamic loads and, at the same time, containing the stress level and the weight. The conceptual scheme of the architecture was then reinterpreted in view of a practical realization of the prototype. Implementation issues (SMA - cells connection and cells relative rotation to compensate the impressed inflection assuring the SMA pre-load) were considered. Through a detailed FE model the prototype morphing performance were investigated in presence of the most severe load conditions.
