In the present study, nonlinear dynamic response of polymer-CNT-fiber multiscale nanocomposite plate resting on elastic foundations in thermal environments using the finite element method is performed. In this regard, the governing equations are derived based on Inverse Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Theory and von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ geometrical nonlinearity. Three type of distribution of temperature through the thickness of the plate namely, uniform linear and nonlinear are considered. The considered element is C1-continuous with 15 DOF at each node. The effective material properties of the multiscale composite are calculated using Halpin-Tsai equations and fiber micromechanics in hierarchy. The carbon nanotubes are assumed to be uniformly distributed and randomly oriented through the epoxy resin matrix. Five types of impulsive loads are considered, namely the step, sudden, triangular, half-sine and exponential pulses. After examining the validity of the present work, the effects of the weight percentage of SWCNTs and MWCNTs, nanotube aspect ratio, volume fraction of fibers, plate aspect, temperature, elastic foundation parameters, distribution of temperature and shape of impulsive load on nonlinear dynamic response of CNT reinforced multi-phase laminated composite plate are studied in details.
Steel, concrete and their combination materials are the most 6commonly used materials for civil engineering structural systems such as buildings, bridge structures and other structures. Recently, however, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, a relatively new composite material made of fibers and polymer resins, have been gradually used in structural systems as an alternative structural material. This paper describes a comparison of design strength equations for steel column and FRP composite column based on design philosophies. The safety factors used in allowable stress design (ASD) are relatively higher in FRP structural design than steel structural design. Column critical stress equations of FRP composites column from an experimental study can be represented by Euler elastic buckling equation at the long-range of slenderness, and an exponential form at the short-range of slenderness as defined in Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of steel column. The column strength of steel and FRP composite columns in large slenderness is independent of material strength, this result verified the elastic buckling equation as derived by Eq. (15) and Eq. (5).
An equation of J-integral for a penny-shaped crack at the end of the fiber embedded in rubber matrix is proposed. The values of J-integral for the specimens with various crack and specimen radius are obtained by FEA(Finite Element Analysis). The dimensional analysis is applied to derive an equation of J-integral as a nonlinear elastic energy release rate. The geometry and deformation calibration function in an equation of J can be expressed in a separated form. The geometry calibration function characterizing the effects of cord and specimen size is expressed in a polynomial form of fourth order. The deformation calibration function characterizes the effect of the overall level of strain. As approaching the infinitesimal strain, the value of the deformation calibration function approaches the results of LEFM(Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics).
Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor arrays can be used to monitor the mechanical behavior of the large composite structures such as wind turbine rotor blades and aircrafts. However, brittle FBG sensors, especially multiplexed FBG sensors are easily damaged when they are installed in the flexible structures. As a protection of brittle FBG sensors, epoxy packaged FBG sensors have been presented in this paper. Finite element analysis and experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of adhesives, packaging materials and the bonding layer thickness on the strain transmission. Two types of epoxy were used for packaging FBG sensors and the sensor probes were attached with various bonding layer thickness. It was observed that thin bonding layer with high elastic modulus ratio of the adhesive to packaging provided good strain transmission. However, the strain transmission was significantly decreased when elastic modulus of the adhesive was much lower than the packaged FBG sensor probe's one.
Steel laminated elastomeric bearings are commonly used in bridge structures to control displacements and rotations and transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure. Proper knowledge of design, fabrication and erection procedures is important to ensure stability and adequate structural performance during the lifetime of the bridge. Difference in elevations sometimes leads to large size gaps between the bearing and the girder which makes the grout thickness that is commonly used for leveling deviate beyond standards. This paper investigates the structural response of High Strength Fiber Reinforced Cementitious (HSFRC) thin plinths that are used to close gaps between bearing pads and precast girders. An experimental program was developed for this purpose where HSFRC plinths of different size were cast and tested under vertical loads that simulate bridge loading in service. The structural performance of the plinths was closely monitored during testing, mainly crack propagation, vertical reaction and displacement. Analytically, the HSFRC plinth was analyzed using the beam on elastic foundation theory as the supporting elastomeric bearing pads are highly compressible. Closed form solutions were derived for induced displacement and forces and comparisons were made between analytical and experimental results. Finally, recommendations were made to facilitate the practical use of HSFRC plinths in bridge construction based on its enhanced load carrying capacity in shear and flexure.
We investigate grain growth behavior of poly-crystalline Mg sheet having strong basal fiber texture using phase field model for grain growth and micro-elasticity. Strong initial basal texture was maintained when external load was not imposed, but was weaken when external biaxial strain was imposed. Elastic interaction between elastic anisotropy of Mg grain and external load is the reason why texture evolution occurs.
Properties of AFS vary with the changes in the face-sheet materials. Hence, the performance of AFS can be optimized by selecting face-sheet materials. In this work, three types of face-sheet materials representing elastic-perfectly plastic, elastic-plastic strain hardening and purely elastic materials were employed to study their effects on the flexural behavior and failure mechanism of AFS systematically. Result showed face-sheet materials affected the failure mechanism and energy absorption ability of AFS significantly. When the foam cores were sandwiched by aluminum alloy 6061, the AFS failed by face-sheet yielding and crack without collapse of the foam core, there was no clear plastic platform in the Load-Displacement curve. When the foam cores were sandwiched by stainless steel 304 and carbon fiber fabric, there were no face-sheet crack and the sandwich structure failed by core shear and collapse, plastic platform appeared. Energy absorption abilities of steel and carbon fiber reinforced AFS were much higher than aluminum alloy reinforced one. Carbon fiber was suggested as the best choice for AFS for its light weight and high performance. The versus strength ratio of face sheet to core was suggested to be a significant value for AFS structure design which may determine the failure mechanism of a certain AFS structure.
In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC (steel fiber reinforced concrete)to investigate the flexural tensile behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fiber contents and the steel fiber aspect ratios. Beam specimens of 10$\times$10$\times$60cm are used. the specimen series are classified according to the steel fiber contents varying 0.5. 1.0, 1.5%, and to the steel fiber aspect ratios varying 60, 80, 100. The three point loading system was used in the fatigue tests. The minimum value of repeated loading was fixed at 10.0kgf and maximum value was 75% to static ultimate strength for periodically using concrete strain gages located at the lower end of the mid-span, and the stress-strain curves were drawn for each specimens, respectively. From the tests result, it was found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller the steel fiber aspect ratio is , the tensile strain of SFRC under fatigue load proportionally increases. By the regression analysis on these results, the empirical formulae to predict the tensile strain of SFRC were suggested. In comparison of the tensile elastic modulus under fatigue load, it was also found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller steel fiber aspect ratio is , the smaller decreasing rate of the stiffness of SFRC under fatigue load decreased.
A study on the dynamic mechanical properties of the high strength carbon fiber epoxy composite beam was carried out. The macromechanical model was used for the theoretical analysis of the symmetric laminated composite beam. The anisotropic plate theory and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory were used to predict the effective flexural elastic modulus and the specific damping capacity of laminated composite beam. The free flexural vibration and torsional vibration tests were carried out to determine the specific damping capacities of the unidirectional laminated composite beam. The vibration tests were performed in a vacuum chamber with laser vibrometer system and electromagnetic hammer to obtain accurate experimental data. From the computational and experimental results, it was found that the theoretical values with the macromechanical analysis and the experimental data of symmetric laminated composite beam were in good agreement.
Effective stiffness of short fiber composite with a three-dimensional random orientation of fibers is derived theoretically and compared with available experimental data. The laminate analogy and transformed laminate analogy are used for modulus prediction of 2-D and 3-D random composites, respectively. The effective stiffness of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of longitudinal and transverse stiffnesses of unidirectional composites. The result of transformed laminate analogy is more accurate than other approaches such as, Christensen-Waals equational and Lavengood-Goettler equation, etc. Also the effective properties of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of fiber and matrix properties such as elastic modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio.
