  • Forces needed for orthodontic tooth movement are obtained from various appliances such as orthodontic wires or elastic rubber. Orthodontic elastic rubber is widely used clinically, but permanent deformation and force decay may occur from the environmental changes, time of clinical use and the extent of the stretch, making the Prediction of force being applied difficult. The Present study examined and compared the changes in residual force between three brands of elastomeric chains (Ormco Generation II Power Chains ; brand A, RMO : Energy-Chain ; brand B, Unitek : AlastiK ; brand C) under various environmental conditions, amount of initial force, types of elastomer and the rate of extension. The characteristic physical properies of the elastomeric chains were as follows. 1. In all three brands, the residual force ratio was largest when the chains were stored in air, with no difference between water and saliva. 2. In all three brands, after 24 hours, there was no statistical difference in residual force ratio according to the initial force level. 3. In Brand A and B, the presence of filament had no correlation with the residual force ratio. In Brand C force decay was more severe when the chain contained filament. 4. In each brand, rate of extension had no effect on residual force ratio. 5. Brand B showed relatively higher residual force ratio compared to other brands.

  • The windshield wiper consists of 4 parts: a blade, an arm, a linkage and a motor. The wiper blade makes contact with the windshield and is designed to be operated normally at an angle of 30~50 degrees to the front glass. If the contact pressure between the wiper blade and windshield surface is too high, noise and wear of the rubber will result. On the other hand, if the contact pressure is too low, the performance will do badly, since foreign substances such as dust and stains will not be removed well. The pressure and friction of the wiper blade has a great influence on its effectiveness in cleaning the front window. This is due to the contact of the rubber with the window. This paper presents the dynamic analysis method to estimate the performance of the flat type blade of the wiper system. The blade has a nonlinear characteristic since the rubber is an incompressible hyper-elastic and visco-elastic material. Thus, Structural dynamic analysis using a complex contact model for the blade is performed to find the characteristics of the blade. The flexible multi-body dynamic model is verified by the comparison between test and analysis result. Also, the optimization using the central composite design table is performed.

  • Concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) are increasingly used as composite sections in structures owing to their excellent load bearing capacity. Therefore, predicting the mechanical behavior of CFST sections under axial compression loading is vital for design purposes. This paper presents the first study on the nonlinear analysis of heated CFSTs with high-strength concrete core containing steel fiber and waste tire rubber under axial compression loading. CFSTs had steel fibers with 0, 1, and 1.5% volume fractions and 0, 5, and 10% rubber particles as sand alternative material. They were subjected to 20, 250, 500, and 750℃ temperatures. Using flow rule and analytical analysis, a model is developed to predict the load bearing capacity of steel tube, and hoop strain-axial strain relationship, and axial stress-volumetric strain relationship of CFSTs. An elastic-plastic analysis method is applied to determine the axial and hoop stresses of the steel tube, considering elastic, yield, and strain hardening stages of steel in its stress-strain curve. The axial stress in the concrete core is determined as the difference between the total experimental axial stress and the axial stress of steel tube obtained from modeling. The results show that steel tube in CFSTs under 750℃ exhibits a higher load bearing contribution compared to those under 20, 250, and 500℃. It is also found that the ratio of load bearing capacity of steel tube at peak point to the load bearing capacity of CFST at peak load is noticeable such that this ratio is in the ranges of 0.21-0.33 and 0.31-0.38 for the CFST specimens with a steel tube thickness of 2 and 3.5 mm, respectively. In addition, after the steel tube yielding, the load bearing capacity of the tube decreases due to the reduction of its axial stiffness and the increase of hoop strain rate, which is in the range of about 20 to 40%.

  • In this investigation, experimental attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. It was found that the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease when MBS rubber was added in the range up to 9 phr and the shape factor effect in torsional vibration is more significant than the shape factor effect in flexural vibration.

  • Mechanical testing methods to determine the material constants for large deformation nonlinear finite element analysis were demonstrated for natural rubber. Uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear tests of rubber specimens are performed to achieve the stress-strain curves. The stress-strain curves are obtained after between 5 and 10 cycles to consider the Mullins effect. Mooney and Ogden strain-energy density functions, which are typical form of the hyperelastic material, are determined and compared with each other. The material constants using only uniaxial tension data are about 20% higher than those obtained by any other test data set. The experimental equations of shear elastic modulus on the hardness and maximum strain are presented using multiple regression method. Large deformation finite element analysis of automotive transmission mount using different material constants is performed and the load-displacement curves are compared with experiments. The selection of material constant in large deformation finite element analysis depend on the strain level of component in service.

  • Inflatable rubber dams are used for controlling flood, impounding water for recreations, preventing beach erosions, diverting water for irrigations, and generating hydropower. They are long, flexible, inflated with air, cylindrical structures on a rigid horizontal foundation such as concrete. The dam is modeled as an elastic shell inflated with air. The mechanical behaviors of the inflated dam model were investigated by using the finite element method. The analysis process such as One Way Coupling Fluid-Structure Interaction consists of two steps. First, the influences of the fluid side were investigated, viz, the shape changes of the inflated rubber dam due to the fluid motions was captured when the height of the dam was 30cm with air pressure 0.01MPa, at which the pressure distributions over the surface of the dam were calculated. And next, the structural deformations were calculated using the pressure distributions. The initial inlet velocity for flow field was set to 0.1m/s. The structural deformation behaviors were investigated. The final research goal is to develop a Korean Inflatable Rubber Dam to be used for generating small hydropower.

  • In the present work a three degree of freedom modeling of a cylindrical rubber element is studied and its applications to an engine mount system are discussed using a simple test structure. The three degree of freedom model for the rubber mount is composed of three mutually orthogonal springs and dampers jointed at the elastic center of the mount. The test structure is designed and manufactured so simple that its mass center and moment of inertia are accurately and easily obtained. The dynamic properties of each rubber mount, i.e., complex stiffnesses, are experimentally identified using hydraulic exciter and used to predict the modal parameters of the test structure mount system by analytical modal analysis. The predicted modal parameters of the system agree well with those estimated by experimental modal analysis. Hence the three DOF model of the rubber mount is proposed for the practical design of an engine mount system.

  • The nonlinearity and high deformability of rubber make accurate analysis of the behavior of cord-rubber composites a challenging task. Some researchers have adopted the third phase between cord and rubber and have carried out three-phase modeling. However, it is difficult to determine the thickness and properties of the interface in cord-rubber composites. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM) is used to investigate the effective and normalized moduli of cord-rubber composites having interfaces of various thicknesses; this model takes into account the 2D generalized plane strain and a plane strain element. The neo-Hookean model is used for the properties of rubber, several interface properties are assumed and three loading directions are selected. It is found that the properties and thickness of the interface can affect the nonlinearity and the effective modulus of cord-rubber composites.
