  • This study is to develop design sensitivity analysis method based on continuum theory for the actual buckling load of vehicle passenger compartment with respect to sizing design variables. For nonlinear structural analysis, both geometric and material nonlinear effects are considered. The total Lagrangian formulation for incremental equilibrium analysis and one-point linear eigenvalue problem for buckling analysis are utilized. Numerical methods are presented to evaluate design sensitivity expressions, using structural analysis results from FEM code. Optical design of vehicle passenger compartment with buckling constraint solved using Gradient projection method.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a hydraulic press for micro-stamping are investigated by Finite Element Analysis. This machine requires high precision in producing milli-structure of electric products such as TFT-LCD back-up light reflector. First, the modal analysis of the parts and the assembly of the hydraulic press is performed. Then, the sensitivity analysis is carried out. The results show that the bearing stiffness and the base mounting stiffness affect the specific mode shapes.

  • Deregulations and market practices in power industry have brought great challenges to the system planning area. In particular, they introduce a variety of uncertainties to system planning. New techniques are required to cope with such uncertainties. As a promising approach, probabilistic methods are attracting more and more attentions by system planners. In small signal stability analysis, generation control parameters play an important role in determining the stability margin. The objective of this paper is to investigate power system state matrix sensitivity characteristics with respect to system parameter uncertainties with analytical and numerical approaches and to identify those parameters have great impact on system eigenvalues, therefore, the system stability properties. Those identified parameter variations need to be investigated with priority. The results can be used to help Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) and Independent System Operators (ISOs) perform planning studies under the open access environment.

  • In sensitivity analysis, semi-analytical method(SAM) reveals severe inaccuracy problem when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements. Recently such errors of SAM resulted by the finite difference scheme have been improved by the separation of rigid body mode. But the eigenvalue should be obtained first before the sensitivity analysis is performed and it takes much time in the case that large system is considered. In the present study, by constructing a reduced one from the original system, iterative method combined with mode decomposition technique is proposed to compute reliable semi-analytical design sensitivities. The sensitivity analysis is performed by the eigenvector acquired from the reduced system. The error of SAM caused by difference scheme is alleviated by Von Neumann series approximation.

  • The updating of the FE model to match it with the experimental results needs the modal information. There are two causes where this methodology is ill-equip to deal with; under-determined and ill-conditioning problem. In this research, the feedback exciter which uses the summation of the white noise and the signals from the measurement sensors multiplied with feedback gains is proposed. The new energy path generated by the feedback exciter changes the modal characteristics of the system and this additional modal information can solve the under-determined problem in the model updating. Through the proper selection of the exciter and sensor locations and the feedback gain, the eigenvalue sensitivity of the updating parameters which cause the ill-conditioning of the sensitivity matrix can be modified. This methodology does not require any additional equipments, makes the acquirement of the additional modal information easy and is robust to the measurement noise.

  • In many dynamic structural optimization problems, the goal is to reduce the total weight of the structure without causing the resonance. Up to now, gradient informations(i.e., design sensitivity) have been used to achieve the goal. For some class of dynamic problems, especially coalescent eigenvalue Problems with multiobjective optimization, the design sensitivity analysis is too much complicated mathematically and numerically. Therefore, this article proposes a new technique fur structural dynamic modification using a mode modification method with Genetic Algorithm(GA). In GA formulation, fitness is defined based on penalty function approach. Design variables are iteratively improved by using genetic algorithm. Two numerical examples are shown, (ⅰ) a cantilevered plate, and (ⅱ) H-shaped structure. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is highly efficient.

  • Among various sensitivity evaluation techniques, semi-analytical method(SAM) is quite popular since this method is more advantageous than analytical method(AM) and global finite difference method(FDM). However, SAM reveals severe inaccuracy problem when relatively large rigid body motions are identified fur individual elements. Such errors result from the numerical differentiation of the pseudo load vector calculated by the finite difference scheme. In the present study, an iterative method combined with mode decomposition technique is proposed to compute reliable semi-analytical design sensitivities. The improvement of design sensitivities corresponding to the rigid body mode is evaluated by exact differentiation of the rigid body modes and the error of SAM caused by numerical difference scheme is alleviated by using a Von Neumann series approximation considering the higher order terms for the sensitivity derivatives.

  • This study predicts the modified structure of eigenvectors and eigenvalues due to the changes in the mass and the stiffness of the structure. The sensitivity method of natural frequency using partial differential are derived with respect to the physical parameter to calculate the structure modification. The method are applied to the 3 degree of freedom???slumped mass model by modeling the mass and stiffness, and then applies the method to a real crankshaft system. The position, direction of parameter change and modified value were predicted for modification. Finally the predicted value is used to investigate the magnitude of vibration and we found that the effect of modification results to reduce the level of magnitude vibration is satisfactory.

  • This study predicts the modified eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the damped structure due to the change in the mass, damping and stiffness of structure by calculation of the sensitivity coefficient using the original dynamic characteristic. The method is applied to examples of the damped 3 degree of freedom system by modifing the mass, damping and stiffness. The predicted dynamic characteristics are in good agreement with these from the structural reanalysis using the modified mass, damping and stiffness.

  • The updating of FE model to match it with the experimental results needs the modal information. There are two cases where this methodology is ill-equip to deal with; under-determined and ill-conditioning problem. The feedback exciter that uses the summation of the white noise and the signals from the measurement sensors multiplied with feedback gains can deal with these problems as the new modal data from the closed loop system generate more constraints the updating parameters should obey. The new modal data from the closed loop system should be different to enhance the condition of the modal sensitivity matrix. In this research, a guide for the selection of the sensor locations and the decision of the corresponding output feedback gains is proposed. This method is based on the sensitivity of the modal data with respect to the feedback gains. Through the proper selection of the exciter and sensor locations and the feedback gain, the eigenvalue sensitivity of the updating parameters which cause the ill-conditioning of the modal sensitivity matrix can be modified and consequently the error contamination in updating parameters are reduced.
