  • Existing test methods for thick-section specimens ( 4mm) have not provided precise compressive properties to date for the analysis and design of thick structure. A survey of the failure behaviour of such thick specimens revealed that the failure initiated at the top corner of the specimen and propagated down and across the width of the specimen as premature failure, not typically reported for thin compression specimens. In the current study, the premature failure was successfully avoided during compressive testing and the failure mode was quite similar regardless of increasing specimen thickness and specimen volume. Failure mode was similar regardless of increasing specimen thickness and specimen volume, i.e. brooming failure mode combined with longitudinal splitting, interlaminar cracking, fibre breakage and kinkband formation (fibre microbuckling). Nevertheless, average failure strengths of the specimens decreased with increasing specimen thicnkiness from 2mm to 8mm with the T800/924C system (36% strength reduction) and specimen volumes from scaling factor I to scaling factor 4 with the IM7/8552 system (46% strength reduction). It was revealed from the literature$^{11}$ that the thickness effect and scaling effect arc caused by manufacturing defects such as void content and fibre waviness.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of an inlet flow pulsation on mixing of two solutions with different concentrations in a micro conduit. We treat an unsteady, incompressible and two-dimensional flow through a micro conduit by adopting the momentum equations with the electrostatic force due to streaming current and the concentration equation. The feasibility of the inlet flow pulsation to enhance the mixing process inside the micro conduit is carefully examined by varying the inlet pulsation frequency. When a low-frequency pulsation is induced at the inlet, the interface between two solutions with different concentrations becomes wavy, which results in mixing enhancement. As the pulsation frequency increases, the waviness of the interface becomes meager, and the concentration gradients at the interface approach the value for the non-pulsating steady flow.

  • The influence of sine wave striated surface roughness on load carrying capacity of a bearing is studied for thin film effect of slider bearing. A Reynolds equation appropriate for slider bearing is used in this paper for analysis and it is discussed using finite difference method of central difference scheme. For a slider bearing with sine wave simple roughness form, several parameters such as pressure, load capacity and shear stress of the bearing can be obtained and also this results can be stored in sequential data file for latter analysis. After all, their distribution can be displayed and analyzed easily by using the matlab GUI technique. The parameters such as amplitude, number of waviness and slope of the surface are used for discussing the load carrying capacity of the rectangular bearing. The results reported in this paper should be applied to the other slider bearing such as rectangular or round embossed surface of slider bearing.

  • In car refinishing, the paint film characteristics of clear coat play an important role in appearance quality. Thus, Primarily in this research, the variance of brightness with the change of the thickness of paint film is investigated. Besides, as changing the thickness of paint film, the correlation between surface leveling(which is one of appearance characteristics) is investigated in this research. Throughout this investigation, we come to know that the increase of clear coat paint film thickness leads the improvement of appearance characteristics within specific range of thickness. Furthermore, the fact that too thick paint film does not increase the brightness or appearance characteristic any more is known. The optimum thickness of clear coat film for the best and appearance characteristics is derived from this research and more efficient way of determining optimum thickness of paint film is found. Particularly, haze value and waviness have more influence on vividness than brightness. Throughout all experiments, the appearance characteristics are much better at painted horizontally than vertically. These results are derived due to the facts that to obtain the same paint film thickness at painted vertically with painted horizontally is difficult and the way of vertical painting is different from horizontal painting. Therefore, the improvement of vertical painting and horizontal painting are required.

  • The objective of this paper is the investigation of the relationships between the surface roughness and film evaporative characteristics of the surface. For example, when the droplet of liquid is in contact with the solid surface, its behavior strongly depends on the surface characteristics. The material properties and geometry - profile shape, waviness, roughness - of the surfaces have strongly influenced on the wettability of the droplet. To investigate the effect of the surface roughness on the film evaporation, firstly, the characteristics of wettabilities were studied according to contact angle and surface tree energy of specimens with various roughness heights. Secondly, the experimental test were carried out on capacities of the tubes diversly roughened by using different kinds of emery papers. Finally, the relationships between the film evaporation characteristics and surface roughness were explained by means of the correlation of contact angle and surface free energy with surface roughness and the influences of surface tree energy on the heat transfer performance.

  • Micro-features such as grooves and lenses, which perform optical functions in flat displays, should be manufactured with a good form accuracy because this is directly related to their optical performance. As the size of the display increases, it is very difficult to maintain a high relative accuracy because of the inherent geometric errors such as the waviness of a large-area plate. In this paper, the optical effect of these geometric errors is investigated, and surface-referenced micro-grooving to measure and compensate for such geometric errors on line is proposed to improve the form accuracy of the micro-grooves. A PZT-based fast depth adjustment servo system is implemented in the tool holder to maintain a uniform groove depth in reference to the wavy surface. Through experiments, the proposed method is shown to be an efficient way to produce high-quality micro- grooves on a wavy die surface.

  • In this paper, thermal conductivities of carbon-phenolic 8-harness satin weave composite, ACP302, were measured and predicted. In the analysis, the satin weave unit cell was identified and modeled discretely by 3-dimensional finite elements, considering the interlaced fiber tow architecture microscopically. At the unit cell boundary, the corresponding periodic boundary conditions were applied. The results were analyzed to investigate the effect of microstructural parameters such as stacking phase shifts, waviness ratio, and fiber volume fraction. The conductivities were also obtained by experiments and compared with the numerical results.

  • What is desirable in engineering is to bring the engineering model as close to reality as possible while the simplicity of model is also considered. In recent years, several studies have been performed on nanocomposites but some of these studies are somewhat far from reality. For example, in many of these studies, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are assumed completely straight, flawless and uniformly distributed throughout the matrix but by studying nanocomposites, we find that this is not the case. In this paper, three steps have been taken to bring the presented models for nanocomposites closer to reality. One is that assuming the straightness of nanotubes is removed and the waviness is considered. Also, the nanotubes are not considered to be pristine and the influence of defect is included in accordance with reality. In addition, the approximation of uniform distribution of nanotubes is ignored and according to experimental observations, the effect of nanotube aggregation is considered. As far as we know, this is the first study on these three topics together in an article. Moreover, we also include the size effects in our models for nanocomposites. To show the accuracy of our models, our results are calibrated with experimental results and compared with theoretical model. For numerical examples, we present the buckling behaviors of nanocomposites including the size effects using nonlocal theory and compare the results of our models with the results of models with above-mentioned approximations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate components of surface roughness in turning with respect to the tool configuration and the changes of working conditions. Tool configurations of SNMG120404, SNMG120408 and DNMG150404, DNMG150408 are used, and working conditions such as cutting speed 3nd feed are varied. That is, the changes of cutting speed and feed were 150, 200, 250 m/min and 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 mm/rev, respectively. From the results obtained by the frequency analysis with spectrum, it is noted that the surface roughness was influenced most significantly by the feed. It is also observed that the vibration of bite had an effect on both the surface roughness and the surface waviness. Moreover, the influence of surface roughness increases as the feed decreases. Lastly, the vibration of the spindle was found to have little influence on the surface roughness in normal cases and the tool configuration was not the components of the surface roughness.

  • In this paper, three-dimensional thermo-mechanical properties of carbon-phenolic 8-hamess satin weave composites were predicted considering geometric parameters of microstructures. The effective properties were calculated by a series of numerical experiments based on unit cell analysis. The microstructural details were modeled through macro-elements, and the periodic boundary conditions were derived for corresponding un it cell types. The Monte Carlo method was employed to consider the random phase shift between the layers, and the results were investigated on the effect of the geometric parameters of shift, number of layers and waviness ratios. Experimental tests were also performed and the results were compared.
