  • This paper described an improved technical method required for proper evaluation of personnel exposures by means of the photographic dosimeter developed by KAERI in lower gamma or X-ray energy regions, with which response of the dosimeter varies significantly. With calibration of the dosimeter in the energy range from 30 to 300 keV, the beam spectrum was carefully selected and specified it adequately. The absorber combinations and absorber thickness used to obtain the specified X-ray spectra from a constant potential X-ray machine were determined theoretically and also experimentally. A correlation between the density and exposure for the four separate energies, such as $49\;keV_{eff},\;154\;keV_{eff}\;250\;keV_{eff}\;and\;662\;keV$, is experimentally determined. As a result, it can be directly evaluated the exposure from the measured response of dosimeter.

  • In order to purify diethylene glycol as main impurity included in p-dioxanone, SLE (solid-liquid equilibria) and mixture density on two components system of p-dioxanone and diethylene glycol were measured and a layered melt crystallization with seed has been applied. The SLE of p-dioxanone and diethylene glycol were a simple eutectic system and the temperature and PDX concentration at eutectic point were 0.08 and 246 K, respectively. Densities of their binary mixtures were well fitted by the best correlation equation, ${\rho}_l=0.405+1.361x+0.002T-0.004xT$. In the melt crystallization, the growth rate (G) was proportional to the 1.5th power of the subcooling degree. The effective distribution coefficient ($K_{eff}$) as the degree of impurity removal was observed to increase with increasing the growth rate and initial p-dioxanone concentration. And also, $K_{eff}$ was correlated with Z function using Wintermantel's model such as $K_{eef}=-0.0604+6.392{\times}Z$. Finally, PDX purity through the optimization of this process can be obtained over 99%.

  • Purpose: This study (a) investigated the effect of microwave power intensity and sample thickness on microwave drying characteristics of radish strips, and (b) determined the best-fit drying model for describing experimental drying data, effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$), and activation energy ($E_a$) for all drying conditions. Methods: A domestic microwave oven was modified for microwave drying and equipped with a small fan installed on the left upper side for removing water vapor during the drying process. Radishes were cut into two fixed-size strip shapes (6 and 9 mm in thickness). For drying experiments, the applied microwave power intensities ranged from 180 to 630 W at intervals of 90 W. Six drying models were evaluated to delineate the experimental drying curves of both radish strip samples. The effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$) was determined from Fick's diffusion method, and the Arrhenius equation was applied to calculate the activation energy ($E_a$). Results: The drying time was profoundly decreased as the microwave power intensity was increased regardless of the thickness of the radish strips; however, the drying rate of thicker strips was faster than that of the thinner strips up to a certain moisture content of the strip samples. The majority of the applied drying models were suitable to describe the drying characteristics of the radish strips for all drying conditions. Among the drying models, based on the model indices, the best model was the Page model. The range of estimated $D_{eff}$ for both strip samples was from $2.907{\times}10^{-9}$ to $1.215{\times}10^{-8}m^2/s$. $E_a$ for the 6- and 9-mm strips was 3.537 and 3.179 W/g, respectively. Conclusions: The microwave drying characteristics varied depending on the microwave power intensity and the thickness of the strips. In order to produce high-quality dried radish strips, the microwave power intensity should be lower than 180 W.

  • The temperature dependence of time temperature integrator (TTI) was investigated in terms of the Arrhenius activation energy (Ea) to determine TTI requirements to accurately predict meat quality during storage. Mathematical simulation was conducted using a numerical analysis. First, using Euler's method and MS Excel VBA, the TTI color change was kinetically modeled and numerically calculated under several storage conditions. From the TTI color variable profiles calculated from the storage time-temperature profiles, $T_{eff}$, which is a constant temperature representing the whole temperature profiles, was calculated. Upon predicting Pseudomonas spp. concentrations (one of the meat qualities) from $T_{eff}$, it was found that if $Ea_{microbial\;spoilage}=Ea_{TTI}$ be true, then Pseudomonas concentrations were calculated to be constant with the same TTI color values, regardless of time-temperature profiles, whereas if $Ea_{microbial\;spoilage}{\neq}Ea_{TTI}$ then Pseudomonas concentrations varied even with the same TTI color values. This indicates that each TTI color value represents its own fixed degree of meat quality, only if $Ea_{meat\;qualities}=Ea_{TTI}$.

  • Making use of log $T_{eff}-M_{bol}$ diagram along with Stohers' stellar evolutionary tracks (1972), we estimated the masses of 107 O stars in HII regions, which were selected from the catalogue compiled by Goy (1973). It is found that our estimated masses of O stars range from $20M_{\odot}\;to\;120M_{\odot}$ and about 20% of them falls in the mass range above $60M_{\odot}$ in agreement with earlier findings of Conti et al. (1975).

  • The standard stellar models for HIP 20916 and HIP 101769 have been constructed to determine the properties of the binary system. Augmented with speckle data which is the magnitude difference between stars of the binary system, the previously determined parameters, such as [Fe/H], distance, total mass, and etc, are used to construct the standard stellar models. And the Green table is used to convert L and $T_{eff}$ into $M_v$ and color for comparison between models and observational data. We present the constructed stellar models of the system.

  • Computer aided unloading elastic compliance method was employed to measure the closure and the length of short cracks. The most significant factor that influences the fatigue growth behavior of short cracks is the crack closure Phenomenon. dc/dN-$\Delta$ $K_{eff}$ relationships of short cracks are found to coincide well with the corresponding long crack relationships. Non-propagating behavior of short cracks at notch root can be predicted from the crack opening SIF of short cracks, $K_{op}$ , and the growth equation of long cracks in Region I and II.n Region I and II.I.
