  • Feeding habits of Conger myiaster collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January 1994 to December 1994 were studied. C. myiaster was a carnivore which consumed mainly fishes, shrimps and crabs. Its diets included small quantities of amphipods, gastropods, cephalopods, polychaetes, mysids, cumaceans and isopods. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small indinviduals preyed on shrimps, fishes, crabs, and gammarid amphipods in nearly equal proportions. While the portion of the stomach contents attributable to shrimps and gammarid amphipods decreased with increasing fish size, consumption of fishes increased progressively. C. myiaster showed very constant prey selection regardless of prey availability-Especially fishes were heavily selected by this species throughout the year, although availability of fishes was lower than any other prey organisms in the eelgrass bed.

Seasonal Variation of Crab (Crustacea : Decapoda) Community in the Eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea (광양만 잘피밭에 서식하는 게류 군집의 계절 변동)

  • Seasonal variation of the crab community in the eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in Kwangyang Bay was studied based on the monthly collections through a year of 1994. The crab community in the eelgrass bed was composed of 21 species representing 12 families. The community was dominated by Charybdis Japonica, Telmessus acutidens, Hemigrapsus penicillatus, and Pugettia quadridens. Crabs collected in the study area were primarily small-sized species or early juveniles of large crab species. Most individuals had carapace width smaller than 25 mm except C. japonica and T. acutidens which had maximum carapace width over 85 mm. More than 5 species were collected every month except January and February (4 and 3 species, respectively). The peak abundance occurred in August and low abundances in autumn and winter. Species diversity indices showed that more diverse crabs were collected In spring and summer, and lesser ones in autumn and winter. The crabs in the study area can be grouped into three groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident species, seasonal species, and temporary species. More abundant and more diverse crabs were collected during nighttime than daytime.

T. niphobles (2$\~$8 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (gammarid and caprellid amphipods), crabs, shrimps and gastropods. Its diets included minor quantities of polychaetes, copepods, tanaids and isopods. T. niphobles showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals preyed mainly on gammarid amphipods, caprellid amphipods and gastropods. However, crabs and shrimps were heavily selected with increasing fish size.

  • Feeding habits of Syngnathus schlegeli were studied by using samples collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea from January 1994 to December 1994. Syngnathus schlegeli was a carnivore which mainly consumed copepods and epiphytal gammarid amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of caprellid amphipods, tanaids and mysids. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In its initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid amphipods were heavily selected with the incretment of the fish size. Food availability in the eelgrass bed changed seasonally. Its main food items were changed according to variations of food availability. Copepods were mainly consumed in spring, and gammarid amphipods in summer and fall.

  • A total of 164 individuals of Hippocampus coronatus were collected from an eelgrass bed in Dongdae Bay, Korea from September 2006 to August 2007. The number of individuals of H. coronatus was higher in September 2006. The size of H. coronatus ranged from 2.4 to 9.3cm in height (Ht), and most of individuals were small size below 5cm (Ht). H. coronatus was a carnivore which consumed mainly gammarid amphipods and copepods. Its diets also included a small amount ofmysids, ostracods, brachiopods, caprellid amphipods, bathynellaceas, isopods, tanaids, and ascothoracids. The diets of H. coronatus underwent size-related changes; smaller individuals consumed copepods, while larger individuals ate gammarid amphipods and mysids. The dietary breadth index of H. coronatus was increased with increasing of their size.

  • Feeding habits of Pseudoblennius percoides collected from the eelgrass bed in Dongdae Bay from January to December 2005 were studied. P. percoides was a carnivore which mainly consumed fishes and caridean shrimps. Its diets included small quantities of mysids,amphipods (gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods), copepods, cephalopods, polychaetes,and crabs. P. percoides undergoes significant size-related changes; smaller fish (<3.0 cm SL) prey mainly copepods, gammarid amphipods, and mysids while the proportion of caridean shrimps and fishes increases with fish size. Fishes and caridean shrimps were major prey organisms for all seasons. Dietary breadth of P. percoides was lower with fish size and seasons.

  • Feeding habits of Rudarius ercodes collected from a Zostera marina bed in Jindong Bay, Korea were studied. R. ercodes was a omnivore which consumed mainly gammarid amphipods, polychaetes and eelgrass (z. marina). Its diets also included a small amount of copepods, urochordates and caprellid amphipods. R. ercodes showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals less than 2cm SL fed mainly on copepods, however, gammarid amphipods and polychaetes were heavily selected with increasing fish size. The consumption of eelgrass by R. ercodes was $10-20\%$ all size classes. The dietary breadth of R. ercodes were varied with fish size

Seasonal Variations in Species Composition and Biomass of Epiphytic Algal Community in an Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Bed (잘피밭에 서식하는 부착해조류 군집의 종조성 및 계절변동)

  • A total of 3 epiphytic macroalgae were collected from eelgrass bed in Jindong Bay, and Scytosiphon lomentaria and Colpomenia sp. in Phaephyta, Gracilaria sp. in Rhodophyta occurred during study periods. For epiphytic microalgae (diatoms), Cocconeis scutellum and Cocconeis placentula were common species. Seasonal variations of epiphytic algal biomass were marked: the higher epiphytic macroalgae was 3.3 g $DW/m^2$ in November 2003; whereas epiphytic diatoms were 43,153 $cells/m^2$ in June 2003. Diversity and number of epiphytic macroalgae species were the lowest in the study area, compared with those of in other areas such as Koongyang Bay, Dongdae Bay, and Aenggang Bay. These results were therefore likely due to the severe physical characteristics of the intertidal mudflat eelgrass biological characteristics, and the deterioration of water quality.

Species Composition of Fishes in Eelgrass Bed of Minyang in Tongyeong, Korea (경남 통영 민양마을 잘피밭의 어류 종조성)

  • A total of 25 species, 3,880 individuals and 3,145.1 g of fishes were collected by a surf net from the eelgrass bed in Minyang. Most fishes collected in the eelgrass bed belong mainly to small fish species or juveniles. The dominant fish species were Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Pholis nebulosa, Chaenogobius gulosus, and Gymnogobius castaneus which accounted for 89.1% of total number of individuals collected. The number of individuals and biomass were higher from June to September when the water temperature was high. However, both the number of individuals and species showed the lowest from January and February. Highest species diversity index (H') was observed in April, 2012.
