  • The range of graphic design has expanded very widely as the digital era emerged, and many new areas of film design, including film, DVD, interactive TV, mobile and DMB, began to require the work of designers. This could be considered as an application as well as a case of digital film design as it has more developed new media environment as basis. The change in the expression techniques of film language is inevitable since major consumers of new media are the younger generation. The method of creating and distributing visual communication work is not standing still anymore. It has been diversified through dynamic movements and changes resulting from interaction. The major objective of this study is to find out and suggest the directions that film and digital media graduate school education of future by researching and analyzing how the nature of design, as an academic subject that keeps on changing and developing, is evolving in the new media environment. For this purpose, the methods of appropriate education system in higher design education, which are derived from case studies and previous studies on education system, are evaluated by examining the consumers. This study aims at finding the most effective training method in film and digital media design, and by integrating current design education with digital film design education establish a better fit education system that complies with the demands of today's society. It will suggest how an educational institute should see ahead of the time and provide what the society will demand in the future.

A Study on the Status of Work and Education of Modelists (모델리스트의 업무 및 교육 실태에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to provide basic data to suggest guidelines for re-education and work improvement of modelists based on the analysis of the current status of modelist work and education. A survey was conducted from January 4 to May 15, 2020, targeting 44 people working in pattern, pattern CAD, and grading in domestic apparel companies. Descriptive statistical analysis and frequency analysis using SPSS 25 were employed to analyze the status of work type, work difficulties, and re-education. For pattern production, the rate of using pattern CAD for business was high. It was found that companies mainly use YUKA CAD (63.8%), and branded companies use pattern CAD (100%). It was found that 3D CAD is mostly employed by vendors (88.9%), and CLO (90%) is mainly used. Regarding difficulties in pattern making, it was found that they experienced difficulties with stretchable materials owing to the amount of shrinkage and sagging of the fabric. The work problem was the lack of requisite working hours owing to the volume of work. Regarding future re-education, 63.6% of the total respondents indicated that they required a course related to pattern correction and material. Moreover, it was found that re-education was necessary to upgrade technology and acquire new knowledge, however, information on re-education was insufficient.

Effect of Design Thinking-based STEAM Program for Primary and Secondary Students (초·중등학생을 위한 디자인적 사고기반의 STEAM교육 프로그램의 효과)

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of design thinking-based STEAM program for primary and secondary students. The design thinking-based STEAM program dealt with advanced scientific technology issues and it consisted of 8 topics. A questionnaire was developed to explore the change of Science concept awareness, Interest, Self-efficacy, Career consciousness of students through the program. The questionnaire consisted of following 4 areas, such as 'Science concept awareness', 'Interest', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy'. Pre-post test was conducted to 75 primary and secondary students. As a result of analyzing post-test compared to pre-test, 'Science concept awareness', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy' of students were improved. And the 'Interest' wasn't changed significantly. Through this research, it can be suggested that the design thinking-based STEAM program can be useful at school education to improve the Science concept awareness, Career consciousness and Self-efficacy of primary and secondary students. It is also proposed that further research of the various areas of interest and other affective variables will be needed.

Research on Geometric Shape in the 20th Century Design Education - Focused on the relation of $Fr{\ddot{o}}bel$ Kindergarten Education - (20세기 디자인교육의 기하학적인 형태에 대한 탐구 - 프뢰벨 유치원 교육과의 연관성을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to explore the fundamental reasons and general circumstances of the introduction of geometric shape to the 20th century's design education. The modern design education was directly influenced by the German Kindergarten Movement and its educational ideal, so they began to employ geometric shapes in visual education. When Friedrich Frobel, a professional German child educator of the 19th century, invented the 'Spielgaben,' it soon became a popular educational tool. It was a turning point in the child educational system, from then they began to actively employ 'tools' in art education. The Spielgaben was created based on the geometric principle of a popular block game of the 19th century. On the other hand, a game program called 'Bechaftigungsmaterial' led early Modernists to adopt geometric shape in their works. Then, geometric shape were applied to a primary educational program designed by the Bauhaus that gave birth to the Modern design education in the 20th century. likewise, the substantial reasons why the principles of point/line/plain and geometric shapes had been taken in the 20th century design education can be explained through this historical background. This research is to investigate how Kindergarten Movement and Modern design education can be associated with each other, particularly in the light of geometric elements. Therefore, I first referred to the historic records in order to reveal their relation, and then analyzed the similarities and differences between the two activities. In result, I could explore the relationship between child educational tools and the 20th century's design education.

  • In the past, the design education focused on the technique and skill to satisfy the production and consumption activities of a corporation based on beauty and practicality in the industrial age. Now, it's time to switchover to a life-quality enhancing education by harmonizing and meeting the public's physical and mental needs because design education is a character education which enhances the quality of life by uplifting people's aesthetic sense. This paper has emphasized on the importance of public education of design through the theoretical investigation on social environmental changes caused by the emergence of information society,,education problems, public education, and the necessity of design education. The reason why this study should be done has been suggested by investigating the necessity of this research and bringing up the issue. Furthermore, the current status and problems of public education on design have been analyzed. Then, based on the result, the development direction of design education has been suggested. This study can be concluded as follows: First, the design education should change from its vertical structure to a horizontal one. It should be widely spread to the public, getting off from its privatization for a certain group. Second, designers and the public should correct their way of thinking about design. The ordinary people as well as the designers should cultivate their capability to find and take care of design related issues in their everyday lives. Third, all people should be the subject of design education for the public. As a part of cultural education on the public's aesthetic sense, design education should be reborn as a field of study in which a sound public culture can be developed by the integration of human life and culture, exceeding the limit of school curriculum.

  • STEAM education is an effective teaching method to develop self-problem-solving skills through creative thinking. In order to revitalize STEAM education, various program models are being developed recently. The purpose of this study is to develop a STEAM education program based on the project-based learing method that includes the process of solving global environmental problems. The STEAM element was extracted by linking the zero energy house design with the middle school curriculum, and the STEAM education program was developed considering career activities. It was analyzed whether the developed program can improve STEAM core competence and job preparation ability. The education program was conducted for middle school students and the program was evaluated through questionnaires. In order to strengthen the STEAM competency, project-based learning method was applied and it was able to enhance the active problem solving ability of learners. In addition, opportunities for career experience could be provided through career exploration programs and various activities. Through this STEAM education program, it is expected to contribute to cultivating human resources with convergence knowledge and core competency.

  • This research takes an introspective and critical approach to the college level visual communication design education in Korea. As such, the changes of the college-level visual communication design curriculum in Korea are analyzed. Selected were 3 major design schools which have a relatively long design educational history in Korea. Those 3 schools are Hongik University, Seoul National University and Ewha University. The curricula were categorized and its changes were followed. The faculty members of those 3 schools were also analyzed. The college level design education began from 1946 at Seoul National University. The Koreas design education was influenced from the Japanese Design curriculum and then the American design curriculum from the beginning. The Korean design educators accepted those new design educational paradigm without any criticism, and it is now structurized in our design educational system. It caused the curriculum with practice-centered classes mostly, and the function centered design education without understanding of socio-cultural environments. The Korean design education needs more liberal arts which will lead us to more discourses about ourselves, and needs to employ more local design educators to solve the intellectual skewness in the Korean academic society in the field of Design.

  • Open education has brought about new concept and variation in educational quality , schools have adopted open education since mid 1980s. Since then ,open education has developed in Korea, but do not fit to the Korean educational situation without some modification in educational space. In the study, some theoretical backgrounds of open education reviewed from some literature were applied, and introduced the flexibility of the open education, some results of the analysis of flexibility space and furniture system. The purpose of this study is to suggest some of direction in the open education space for more advanced Korean education situation.

  • Graduate education in general means nurturing scholars who are capable of research that adds to the 'body of knowledge' and educators in the higher education system. Therefore 'discovering' new knowledge has always been a major role of graduate schools. However, interior design is a special field that 'application' can also produce new knowledge and therefore a wider understanding of scholarship is needed especially in the graduate level education. The purpose of this paper is to understand Interior Design graduate education system in the United States in order to develop issues that need to be discusses and addressed in Korea. Therefore, this paper first examines meanings of graduate degrees in general and current situation of Interior degrees offered in Korea. Then investigates the different types of graduate degrees in the U.S. such as post-professional degrees, first-professional degrees, and differences in general degree(M.A., M.S.) and professional degrees (M.F.A., M.I.D.). The researcher has used websites of each school and information lists of degrees offered by KIID and IDEC that serves as the main educators council in each countries. The characteristics of graduate degrees in America can be described as a structured system based on variety, flexibility, and distinction. For instance, M.F.A means a professional degree that is focused on building theory based project abilities, longer period to study but counted as a terminal in the field. However, in Korea even though the title of the degrees may differ there is not much difference shown in the educational contents. Therefore issues such as developing a more universal and international degree system, flexible and selective educational road-map, mutual understanding and unified system between various organizations for better graduate education system are proposed. Moreover, hope to start a discourse on defining scholarship and professionalism in the field of Interior Design.

A Teaching Model for Capstone Design Class in English Education (영어수업에서의 캡스톤디자인 수업 모델)

  • The purpose of this study is (1) to present a model for Capstone design class in English education, and (2) to recognize students' performance and perceptions about Capstone design class in English education. The participants were senior students majoring in English education. The Capstone design class model was developed, applied, and evaluated after changing 'English-American Culture' subject to 'Capstone Design for English-American Culture Education.' In this study, the class design, performance procedures, derived topics, and examples of performance outcomes were presented. The classes were also evaluated through an understanding evaluation of English-American culture, task performance and final outcome evaluation, a descriptive satisfaction assessment of students, a lecture evaluation, and a teacher's self-reflection assessment. As the result, the average score of a class that applies Capstone design was higher than that of a class that does not apply the Capstone design. There were many positive opinions regarding the Capstone design class. In addition, the teacher's self-reflection indicated that students should be exposed to such design from the beginning.
