  • This study aimed to introduce a case study of a basic engineering design course using the ENACT model for fostering social responsibility of engineers, and to investigate the educational effects of the course. Since the ENACT model was designed to encourage STEM college students to pursue responsible problem solving based on their understanding of socioscientific issues, we assumed that it would be beneficial for engineering students to foster their social responsibility as well as their understanding of science/engineering-related issues. A total of 49 engineering students who enrolled in the course participated in the study. Data included students' course artifacts, reflection papers, and responses to survey questionnaires. Results indicated that the students became more aware of nature of science and technology after the program, and began to solve the problems while considering the views of multiple stakeholders. They highly valued the experience of communicating with others as engaging in the civic activities. They also expressed high satisfaction and feeling of achievement on the course learning. We expect the ENACT model to be an effective teaching guideline that fosters the social responsibility of engineering students and furthermore, engineering ethics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore EMT-paramedic students' experience of simulation education and analyze the confidence before and after education, learning attitude and course evaluation. Method: Research survey was conducted on 38 EMT-paramedic students during November, 2011 and EMT-paramedic students' experience of simulation education was analyzed after applying head, spinal, and chest injury scenario. The confidence before and after education, learning attitude and course evaluation in gender were analyzed by Mann-Whitny U test and the difference of confidence before and after education was analyzed by Wilcoxon signed rank test and learning attitude & course evaluation were analyzed by evaluating frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation by using SPSS WIN 17.0 program. Results: 1. Students experienced various advantages such as increasing interest and self-reflection on learning, critical thinking ability, and EMT-paramedic-role experience and recognition of importance of teamwork. Students also pointed out disadvantages such as gap between real situation and simulation, limit of time and equipments, and burden of demonstration. 2. The confidence between before and after education, learning attitude and course evaluation in gender were not significant different statistically. 3. Confidence mean score elevated from 5.53(before education) to 5.87(after education), but the difference in their confidence did not show significant difference statistically. 4. Total mean score in learning attitude after simulation education was 3.70 out of 5.00, which is considerably very high. 5. Total mean score in course evaluation was 3.89 with score of 3.83 in evaluation in learning environment and 3.99 in evaluation of debriefing. Conclusion: The finding of this study demonstrate that the simulation education can provide a safe and repetitive practice environment, improve problem-solving ability and critical thinking, and increase the confidence in prehospital emergency care; therefore, simulation may be the new effective EMT-paramedic education strategy.

  • The course evaluation is used in faculty evaluation model even the grade of course evaluation has a big gap in absolute value with the characteristics of subjects. It is important to obtain the reliability of course evaluation because the result of course evaluation is fed to instructor to assure the quality of instruction. The purpose of this paper are to analyze the relation of attendance rate and course evaluation to improve the reliability of course evaluation.

  • This current study employs multi-year design-based research to design and implement a course in teacher education in Korea. Specifically this paper reports our first attempt to work with 3 primary in-service teachers majoring in computer education. We have incorporated design thinking (DT) into the course design and investigated how primary teachers appreciate the role of DT and recognize the connection between teaching computational thinking and DT. This qualitative study reports the course design, its progression, reflections, and learning outcomes.

  • Universities have to offer efficient education through measuring and evaluating courses precisely. Course evaluation gives instructors a chance of understanding quality and issues arisen in courses, and students a chance of the effective learning. This study investigates general characteristics and administration method of course evaluation in engineering education. The investigation includes elements of course evaluation, various evaluation methods, effective administration methods, and validation of the evaluation. A survey was undertaken to the students at Myongji University regarding course evaluation. The study summarized the results of the survey.

  • This study investigated 15 Postgraduate students' conception toward the nature of science and the changes of those conceptions through the course called 'Philosophy of Science and Science Education', And another 8 postgrauate students who took the course called 'Mathematical Physics' were also investigated for comparison. A survey questionnaire involving 9 items was developed and administered before and after the course to both groups. Individual interviews with students taking 'Philosophy of Science and Science Education' were carried out in a small scale for obtaining additional information about their background knowledge. The results of this study showed that the students' traditional views of philosophy of science including the objective observation and the inductive method were reduced after the course, 'Philosophy of Science and Science Education'. On the other hand. views of modem philosophy of science including the theory-laden observation, the tentativeness of scientific knowledge and science as human activities became more popular. It was also found that their conceptions towards Science were different according to their previous knowledges on the philosophy of science and their majors.

  • Purpose: The Essential Surgical Procedures in Trauma (ESPIT) course was developed as a model to teach necessary surgical procedures to trauma physicians. Its goals are to improve knowledge, self-confidence, and technical competence. Methods: The ESPIT course consisted of five lectures and a porcine lab operative experience. The ESPIT course has been run seven times between February 2014 and April 2016. ESPIT participants completed a questionnaire to assess self-efficacy regarding essential surgical procedures in trauma before and immediately after taking the ESPIT course. Sixty-three participants who completed both pre- and post-course questionnaires on self-efficacy were enrolled in this study. Results: The overall post-ESPIT mean self-efficacy score was higher than the pre-ESPIT mean self-efficacy score ($8.3{\pm}1.30$ and $4.5{\pm}2.13$, respectively) (p<0.001). Self-efficacy was significantly improved after the ESPIT course in general surgeons (p<0.001), thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons (p<0.001), emergency medicine doctors, and others (neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons) (p<0.001). The differences in self-efficacy score according to career stage (<1 year, 1-3 years, 3-5 years, and >5 years) were also statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusions: The data of the ESPIT participants indicated that they felt that the ESPIT course improved their self-efficacy with regard to essential surgical procedures in trauma. The ESPIT course may be an effective strategy for teaching surgical procedures, thus promoting better management of traumatic injuries.

  • As society has changed to being more knowledge-based, it is necessary that change of paradigm is incorporated into engineering education and the education goals and the assessment method of educational outcomes is developed to promptly meet the needs of the times. A purpose of this study is to measure learning outcomes in coursework of engineering college every semester, which ultimately provides to validate program outcomes. We looked into teaching-learning style of course in the engineering college and analyzed its grade method and tool. By use of a survey, we derived a reasonable method to measure for the learning outcomes in course and presented tools for course-embedded assessment to measure that learning outcomes had been tied to their objectives. These tools are effective to determine that program outcomes and education goals have been achieved, ultimately. In addition, it will help that instruction builds a loop system for better.
