Purpose: This study was conducted to verify the validity and reliability of the modified Transition Shock Scale for use among nursing students. Methods: From March 8-April 3, 2018, 207 nursing students participated in this study and were asked to complete self-reported questionnaires, including transition shock, clinical stress, and adapting to clinical practicums. The IBM SPSS Win 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs were used for data analysis. Results: A confirmatory factor analysis supported good convergent and discriminant validities ($x^2/df=1.58$, TLI=.92, CFI=.95, RMSEA=.053, AVE=.51-.68, CR=.75-.68). Correlations among transition shock, clinical stress (r=.34, p<.001), and adapting to clinical practicums (r=-.54, p<.001) were significant. Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was .85, and for the six subfactors it ranged from .65 to .75. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the 17-item transition shock questionnaire is an appropriate instrument for measuring nursing students' transition shock with good validity and reliability.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents of disaster nursing education at universities in Korea and Japan, with focus on textbooks. Methods: Disaster nursing contents from 11 Korean community health nursing textbooks and 3 Japanese disaster nursing textbooks were analysed. Results: Three themes and 8 categories of disaster nursing content in the selected textbooks were analyzed. The themes classified include 'understanding of disaster', 'disaster management' and 'disaster management system'. The theme of 'understanding of disaster' consists of such categories as 'disaster concept/outline', 'classification of disaster', 'disaster management step' and 'disaster impact'. The theme of 'disaster management activities' consists of categories such as 'disaster management activities' and 'disaster nursing'. The theme of 'national disaster management system' consists of categories like 'national disaster management system' and 'international disaster relief'. From the comparison of disaster nursing education in the two countries, we found that themes were similar but there were differences between the two countries in content configuration. Korea and Japan have adopted the framework of International Council of Nurses for disaster nursing education. Korea stressed legal and ethical capabilities, while Japan included psychological support for disaster management service providers. Conclusion: Disaster education is an important factor in a nurse's ability for a disaster management. Development of a comprehensive disaster education program is necessary to enhance disaster care capacities.

Purpose : This study examined the status of critical care nursing education in bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) to suggest future directions. Methods : The target of the survey was 185 BSN programs that were certified by the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education as of October 31, 2016. We structurally reviewed the curriculums and the course syllabi. Results : Forty-eight courses of 42 BSN programs were analyzed. Only five programs offered both theoretical and practical courses in critical care nursing; 22 offered theoretical courses and 26 offered practical courses. Most courses were offered as electives with 1 or 2 credits, and were taught by faculty who were experts in adult health nursing. Conclusion : The results show that there is a quantitative shortage of critical care nursing education in the curriculum of BSN programs in Korea. The lack of knowledge and skills on critical care can lead to a burden of new intensive care unit nurses and is a threat to patients' health. It is necessary to develop a practical and integrative curriculum for critical care nursing education.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship among Critical Thinking Disposition (CTD), stress of clinical practice and clinical competence in Korean nursing students. Methods: Participants were 407 baccalaureate nursing students (3rd and 4th grades) in Korea. Variables included CTD, stress of clinical practice, clinical competence, and demographic variables. Data was analyzed by frequencies, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression. Results: Clinical competence positively correlated with CTD, but negatively correlated with stress of clinical practice. The regression model explained 25.6% of clinical competence. The significant predictors of clinical competence were intellectual eagerness, intellectual fairness in CTD, conflict with patients, and clinical environment in stress of clinical practice. Conclusions: CTD and stress of clinical practice contribute to nursing student's clinical competence. Therefore, efforts to encourage nursing student's CTD, increase stress management skills, especially in conflict with patients, and build a supportive clinical environment should be made to strengthen clinical competence.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify self-efficacy, disposition to critical thinking and level of nursing competency in new nurses and to exam the correlation among these variables. Method: The sample was composed of 286 new nurses who had worked at E hospital for 1 year. Descriptive and correlation analysis using the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for self-efficacy was 67.10, disposition to critical thinking, 3.01 and nursing competency, 3.02. There were significant differences in scores for 3 variables between nurses with College degrees and nurses with Baccalaureate degrees. There was a significant positive correlation between disposition to critical thinking and nursing competency scores. Conclusion: Further study of the various components that influence nursing competency is necessary. Also based on the disposition to critical thinking, there is a need to develop education programs to strengthen curiosity and other related variables. The results of this study confirmed the necessity of developing a clinical model of nursing competency ability.

Purpose: This study reviewed the innovative educational strategies that have been implemented successfully in US baccalaureate nursing education programs to facilitate appropriate attitudes about caring for older adults. Methods: The data were collected through a search of PubMed and CINAHL using the key words, gerontological or geriatric, attitudes about aging or older people, baccalaureate or undergraduate nursing education or curriculum. Results: The successful strategies are categorized as follows: 1) a multidisciplinary approach integrating aging issues and gerontological contents into diverse nursing courses, 2) active participation of community-dwelling healthy older individuals as an educational mentor, 3) use of audiovisual materials to investigate the misconceptions and attitudes about aging, and 4) discussion through critical thinking and self-reflection toward aging. Implications: For the interdisciplinary approach within nursing courses, it is essential to derive the key contents for gerontological nursing applicable to integration into diverse nursing courses. In addition, it is necessary to provide administrative support for implementing innovative strategies and constructing consistent partnerships with the community for active participation of the elderly as a mentor. Lastly, recognizing the significance of educational strategies for enhancing desirable attitudes toward gerontological nursing and supporting the development of educational capability of a faculty are key issues.

Purpose: This descriptive survey was undertaken to find out the offering types of Physical Examination and Health Assessment course, student's ability to utilize web-based multimedia, and the basic knowledge on physical examination and health assessment in students attending baccalaureate(BSN) and associate degree(AD) programs in nursing, RN-BSN completion programs, and medical school. Method: 77 nursing programs in Korea were surveyed for the information on Physical Examination and Health Assessment courses, and the basic knowledge were tested on 169 nursing and medical students. Results: Majority of BSN(90.69%) and AD(85.29%) programs were offering Physical Examination and Health Assessment courses in students's sophomore years. Majority(95.58%) of programs were using face to face teaching method where as only 4.41% were using web-based multimedia programs. Basic knowledge on Physical Examination and Health Assessment were highest among students in medial school(14.04%) and RN-BSN(13.15%) compared to BSN(8.96%) or AD(8.06%) program. Conclusion: Web-based multimedia contents on Physical Examination and Health Assessment should be developed and should be integrated into the nursing curriculum.
There is an urgent need to improve the tool predicting success or failure of academic achievement of nursing in Korea so as to identify as early as possible those students who should receive special instruction and to improve screening procedures for admission of nursing. The main purpose of this study is to identify the correlation between the grade point averages of courses learned and their psychological test characteristics in a baccalaureate nursing program. All 240 students, except freshmen, enrolled in Nursing Department of Seoul National University in the spring semester, 1972, participated in this study. All of the subjects completed the psychometric tests such as interest test, personality test and test of self-concept. Total grade point averages, grade point averages of general education subjects, of supporting science courses and of professional education subjects were used as performance criteria of the students. Through the calculation of product-moment correlation coefficients between the test scores and four grade point averages of each class and of total subjects, the following findings and recommendations were obtained. 1. There was so much variation in characteristics of interest test correlated with academic achievement of nursing students in each class. 2. Since the school objectives, curriculum and teaching strategies may affect predictive efficiency of characteristics of students'interest test, interest test must-be utilized in a homogeneous group in order to predict school achievement. 3. Characteristics of interest test positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages of all subjects were scientific interest-biological, scientific interest-physical, and humanitarian interest. Scientific interest-physics: was the only characteristic positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of professional courses. 4. There were various patterns in characteristics of personality test correlated with school achievement of nursing students by class pattern and personality maturation as they progress toward higher classes. 5. A characteristic of personality test, responsibility, is in high positive correlation with academic achievement in the upper division of classes. 6. Responsibility was the sole personality factor positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of nursing courses in the total number of students. 7. There were very different correlation coefficients between characteristics of self-concept test and academic achievement according to the type of each class and type of courses they learned. 8. Characteristics of self-concept test positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of nursing courses of all students were physical self and row variability. Those who have positive concept on their own physical status and who are deficient in self-concept were higher in total grade point averages and grade point averages of professional courses than other students. 9. Scores of professional courses offered in freshmen and sophomore classes were in positive correlation with limited number of characteristics of psychological tests. In pursuit of a tool predicting successful academic achievement of nursing students, their G.P.A. during the junior and senior year of nursing will serve as the more reasonable criteria. 10. Junior students of this school were in higher positive correlation with many psychological factors than other classes.
Purpose. Nursing has evolved as a unique and independent field over the last decades. Unfortunately, many nurses in Korea express concern that they lack appropriate background knowledge in bioscience necessary to practice nursing competently. To determine the reasons of their concerns, we examined the perceptions of RNs regarding bioscience courses in their undergraduate (Baccalaureate and 3 year diploma program) and their perceived relations to the practice of nursing. Methods. The structured questionnaires were sent to 3 university-affiliated tertiary hospitals in Seoul, Korea. Results. The responses given by the nurses in the two groups were similar. The nurses in this study reported that the bioscience courses they took as undergraduates had little relation to their professional tasks. This lack of link between bioscientific knowledge and nursing practice may be partly due to the fact that the courses are taught by non-nursing faculties who are not familiar with nursing tices. It also appears that bioscience knowledge deficit was most prominent during nursing assessment regardless of the program they attended or the unit they are currently working. Conclusion. Bioscience courses should be integrated into the nursing curriculum properly and taught by nursing faculty who have a strong background in biological sciences.
