  • Computer technology pursuing more innovative image than before, makes some characteristics which distinguishes the digital fiction film from the analogue fiction film. One hand, the split screen in analogue film aides the development of drama in the aspect of narrative, on the other hand, it controls the psychology of spectator. The composite image in digital fiction film by computer graphic, and elaborated digital editing show many innovation in the field of audiovisual. In this context, I would like to remark on the digital film (2003) directed by Ang-Lee. In , the split screen and the composition of the fast transiition of shots in the scene of laboratory were created by computer graphic program for special effects. As visual special effect plays an important role in digital film, its narrative space creates a space which is distinguishable from that of analogue film. This can be an example which says a lot for the special aspect of digital narrative.

  • Interactive audio service provide with audio generating and editing functionality according to user's preference. A spatial audio object coding (SAOC) scheme is audio coding technology that can support the interactive audio service with relatively low bit-rate. However, when the SAOC scheme remove the specific one object such as vocal object signal for Karaoke mode, the scheme support poor quality because the removed vocal object remain in the SAOC-decoded background music. Thus, we propose a new SAOC vocal harmonic extranction and elimination technique to improve the background music quality in the Karaoke service. Namely, utilizing the harmonic information of the vocal object, we removed the harmonics of the vocal object remaining in the background music. As harmonic parameters, we utilize the pitch, MVF(maximum voiced frequency), and harmonic amplitude. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we perform the objective and subjective evaluation. As our experimental results, we can confirm that the background music quality is improved by the proposed scheme comparing with the SAOC scheme.

  • Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is one of the most important crops of the world. With the completion of the soybean genome sequence, the Korean soybean core collection consisted of 430 accessions with genetic and phenotypic diversity was constructed in recent year. The availability of genome sequences and core collection will result in the crop improvement by molecular breeding using the various accessions and genome editing approaches. Efficient tissue culture techniques, such as haploid production, protoplast culture and plant regeneration from various organs are essential for the successful molecular biological approach and crop improvement. However, soybean is still considered to be recalcitrant in tissue culture because of the low frequency of regeneration and limitation of available responsive cultivars. In this study, we discuss the recent studies of tissue culture technology and methodology for efficient tissue culture to genetic improvement and application of molecular biotechnology in soybean.

  • In this paper, we propose a new Bit-Rate control algorithm based on bit usage matching to substitute encoded GOP(s) for new GOP(s) in MPEG-2 bitstream. It iteratively encodes current picture according to quantization value of previous picture and records bit-usage of each slice until nearly target bits are used. With target bits falling in two output bits, quantization value of slice should be changed to alleviate output bit error. We use recorded bit-usage information to decide which slices should be encoded with one quantization value and others with another. As every macroblock has different activity, we change macroblock quantization value using slice quantization value and activity value. The simulation results demonstrate that the fluctuation of the output bits can be kept within few-several tens of bits while maintaining the quality of the reconstructed pictures at a relatively stable level.

  • Due to the diverse utilization of multimedia, interests are increasing towards processing (saving, editing, searching, etc) three dimensional object data. This paper proposes and realizes a retrieval system for three dimensional objects using reflective symmetry. For the retrieval method, a reflective symmetric axis with a projector is used. The symmetric plane is calculated by the reflection symmetry, and the depth buffer is calculated for the symmetric plane. Then, by applying the Fourier Transform to the depth buffer, the feature vector for the object is generated and retrieved. For the sample of inquiry, the model of similar symmetry was extracted using the benchmark data from Konstantz University. Considering that most of the objects have symmetrical characteristics, the proposed method of retrieving three dimensional objects using a reflective symmetric surface is an outstanding retrieval system.

  • The development of the digital compression technology and the broadcasting receiver's processing power make it possible to apply a multi-view function to the broadcasting services. The multi-view function is usually utilized to provide simultaneously several programs to viewers or to implement a multi-angle service of a sports program that allows a viewer to choose a video of his/her prefer viewpoint. The paper proposes an integrated method for utilizing a multi-view function in the digital broadcasting environment in which more than 100 programs are on air and there may be various data services which want to use multi-view video clips. For the purpose, a method of composing and transmitting multi-view videos and related information has been devised and a Java API to utilize the rapid editing function of a decoding chip-set has been implemented to clip, resize, and display parts of the multi-view videos.

  • The royal astronomical observatory compiled the Astronomical Almanac during the Joseon dynasty, though there were some changes of its organization. However, the observatory underwent sudden changes in the late period mainly due to the influence of historical events such as the Gabo (甲午) and The Eulmi (乙未) Reforms in 1894 and 1895, respectively, and the Japanese invasion in 1910. In this paper, we study the changes of the compilation institution of the Korean Astronomical Almanac and of its organization for the period of 1894 to 1912. During this period, the name of the observatory had been changed several times, from Gwansanggam (觀象監) to Gwansangguk (觀象局) in 1894 and to Gwansangso (觀象所) in 1895. In addition, the affair of the Astronomical Almanac compilation was transferred to the Editorial Bureau [編輯局] of the Ministry of Education [學部] and to the Editing Department [編輯課] of the Governor-General of Korea [朝鮮總督府]. In 1907, the Gwansangso was abolished. Moreover, the affair of timekeeping was separated and the official number of personnel was reduced to less than 5% compared to that of Gwansanggam. Consequently, the royal astronomical observatory was significantly reduced in terms of its functions and the organization through the process of those changes. Therefore, we believe that this period is important when seeking to understand the transition between the traditional Astronomical Almanac of the Joseon dynasty and its modern astronomical counterpart of the present day.

  • Captured human motion data has been widely utilized for understanding the mechanism of human motion and synthesizing the animation of virtual characters. Searching for desired motions from given motion data is an important prerequisite of analyzing and editing those selected motions. This paper presents a new method of content-based motion retrieval without the need of additional metadata such as keywords. While existing search methods have focused on skeletal configurations of body pose or planar trajectories of locomotion, our method receives a three-dimensional trajectory as its input query and retrieves a set of motion intervals in which the trajectories of body parts such as hands, foods, and pelvis are similar to the input trajectory. In order to allow the user to intuitively sketch spatial trajectories, we used the Leap Motion controller that can precisely trace finger movements as the input device for our experiments. We have evaluated the effectiveness of our approach by conducting a user study in which the users search for dozens of pre-selected motions from baseketball motion data including a variety of moves such as dribbling and shooting.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether orthodontic treatment experience affects the individual's perception of smile esthetics and to evaluate differences among orthodontically treated laypersons, non-treated laypersons, and dentists by using computerized image alterations. Methods: A photograph of a woman's smile was digitally altered using a software image editing program. The alterations involved gingival margin height, crown width and length, incisal plane canting, and dental midline of the maxillary anterior teeth. Three groups of raters (orthodontically treated laypersons, non-treated laypersons, and dentists) evaluated the original and altered images using a visual analog scale. Results: The threshold for detecting changes in maxillary central incisor gingival margin height among laypersons was 1.5 mm; the threshold of dentists, who were more perceptive, was 1.0 mm. For maxillary lateral incisor crown width and height, the threshold of all three groups was 3.0 mm. Canting of the incisal plane was perceived when the canting was 3.0 mm among non-treated laypersons, 2.0 mm among treated laypersons, and 1.0 mm among dentists. Non-treated laypersons could not perceive dental midline shifts; however, treated laypersons and dentists perceived them when the shift was ${\geq}3.0mm$. Conclusions: Laypersons with and without orthodontic treatment experience and dentists have different perceptions of smile esthetics. Orthodontically treated laypersons were more critical than non-treated laypersons regarding incisal plane canting and dental midline shifts. Based on these findings, it is suggested that orthodontic treatment experience improved the esthetic perceptions of laypersons.
