We collected and examined germplasm resources of lettuces, edible chrysanthemums and mallows for organic farmers. We found that 3 genotypes (OL-51, OL-52, and OL-63) are suitable for organic cultivation. The main use of treatment for grey mold among eco-friendly pest control methods is helpful to increase efficiency of seed-gathering after collecting and evaluating a total of 64 kinds of lettuces-collected 43 South Korea local varieties, 8 kinds cultivated by the Highland Agriculture Research Center, 4 kinds of cultivated lettuces, and 9 kinds for sales- to choose appropriate kinds of lettuces for organic cultivation in South Korea. We chose those with more than 300 leaves (OC-18, OC-44, and OC-51) after evaluation of yield characteristics of a total of 62 edible chrysanthemums. We covered each genotype of seed of edible chrysanthemums when gathering the seeds by ourselves so as not to decrease the purity of each genotype. We chosed OM-38, OM-39, and OM-40 for their yield performance and germination rates among the total 41 genotypes of mallows. We selected 9 genotypes of lettuces, editable chrysanthemums and mallows with possibility of organic cultivation and found that they can be used permanently through self seed-gathering on organic farms.
Antibacterial activities of edible plant extracts were investigated to develop natural antimicrobial agents protecting horticultural products from spoiling-microorganisms during their storage. Crude extracts of Artemisa capillaris Allium tuberosum Ailanthus altissima Zanthoxylum pieperitum Pinus densiflora Morus alba lxeris dentata and Allium sativum showed remarkable antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli K 12 and Bacillus subtilis KCTC 1028 After solvent extraction of the crude extracts with n-hexane ethyl acetate chloroform and water in sequence each fractions was re-examined for the antbacterial activities. As results the ethyl acetate fractions of A. capillaris Aaltissima, P. densiflora and I. dentata and all fractions of Z. piperitum and A. sativium showed relatively strong antibacterial activities against E. coli and B. subtilis and the ethyl acetate fraction of A. altissima was the strongest(6mm and 7mm respectively) against two strawberry-spoiling bacteria isolated and identified at our laboratory as Staphylococcus sp. TG-101 and Staphylococcus sp. TG-102.

We investigated traditional knowledge about ethnobotanical uses around national parks in the northern areas of Province Gyeongsangbuk-do, with the focus on the Sobeaksan National Park area. Interviews were carried out to 138 residents at 42 places from 7 counties and/or cities, and verified species and usage information were categorized by taxonomic groups, usage, and used parts. The ethnobotanical species of the regions consisted of a total of 277 taxa: 244 species, 3 subspecies, 28 varieties, and 2 forma in 213 genera of 79 families. The significant native plants included one Endangered Species (Paeonia obovata Max.) and four endemic species (Salix hallaisanensis H. Lev., Aconitum pseudolaeve Nakai, Paulownia coreana Uyeki, and Cirsium setidens (Dunn) Nakai, Sasa coreana Nakai). About 17 Approved Species for Delivering Overseas designated by Korea Ministry of Environment have been also traditionally valuable in the regions. The main usage of the plants were edible (185 taxa) and medicinal (175 taxa). Leaves were most commonly used parts (109 taxa), followed by stems (73 taxa), fruits (69 taxa), roots (67 taxa), and wholes (57 taxa). The traditional usage of plants were diverse as those useful parts. Leaves, fruits and seeds were used as edible and medicinal; sprouts (young shoots) were mainly used as edible; but roots and flowers were used as medicinal. The study does not only provides examples of traditional uses of native plants, but also facilitates sustainable managements and developments of ethnobotanical knowledge for the contemporary society.
Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is a highly valued edible grasshopper species in Africa. However, the effects of plant diets on lipid content and fatty acid composition of R. differens are not well understood. We tested the effects of four diets on the total lipid content and fatty acid composition of R. differens. Sixth instar nymphs of R. differens were reared on one, and mixtures of two, three, and six natural plant inflorescences. Individuals collected from the field constituted a control treatment. We extracted lipids and analyzed the fatty acid methyl esters using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We analyzed if the total lipid content, body weight, and fatty acid composition differed among diets and between the sexes using two-way ANOVAs and a PERMANOVA model, respectively. The total lipid content and weight of R. differens did not differ among the diets. The nine common fatty acids were palmitic (mean across treatments, 26%), oleic (22%), palmitoleic (18%), linoleic (13%), stearic (7%), myristic (6%), myristoleic (4%), ${\alpha}$-linolenic (2%) and arachidic acid (1%). The composition of fatty acids and the proportion of essential fatty acids significantly differed among the diets. The proportion of essential fatty acids was highest in the control treatment (21%) but low in less diversified (one to three feed) diets (12-13%). This study demonstrates that the fatty acid composition in R. differens can be influenced through diet. Thus, with dietary manipulations, using local plants in Africa, it is possible to produce R. differens with preferred high quality essential fatty acids for human consumption.

The edible sweetener aspartame is formed from the synthesis of asparagine, one of the amino acids, and phenylalanine. It is a protein ingredient that produces sweetness 200 times higher than sucrose, and is used as a diet product because it is a substance that can replace sugar. Although the effects on animals and humans have been well studied, no studies have been conducted on plant metabolism. In this study, the effect of aspartame metabolism was tested using germinated onion, bean sprouts, and Kalanchoe. The three types of plants with germinated roots showed rapid growth in the early stage of treatment with 1mM aspartame, and showed a nutrient supply effect due to the effect of amino acids, which are constituents. However, when treated for 4 weeks, symptoms similar to lateral roots appear in the form of lignification in onions, the effect of quickly withering is seen in bean sprouts, and senescence of roots appears in 12-week-old Kalanchoe. All of them show accelerated aging after the growth phase. This shows that, among the two amino acids, asparagine is related to auxin generation that induces rapid growth, and it is thought to be the result of lignification due to the effect of phenylalanine.

To investigate the characteristics of edible flowers as a food material, we have examined the kinds, colors, sizes, fresh weights, pigments and shipping periods of edible flowers marketed on the cropping farms, selling agencies and Internet shopping malls from February through September, 2005. Thirty six kinds of edible flowers were marketed in Korea, and all but the chrysanthemum were introduced species. The characteristics of edible flowers were shown differently by the varieties following the same kinds of flowers. Those colors were yellow (twenty five kinds), red (twenty three), pink (twenty), white (eighteen), and orange (sixteen). Flower diameters were measured and showed that seven kinds of edible flowers were 1.0 to 2.0cm, fourteen 2.0 to 3.0cm, sixteen 3.0 to 4.0cm, eight 4.0 to 5.0cm, and nine over 5.0cm. Flower fresh weights were measured as follows: twenty one kinds of edible flowers were under 0.5g ($58.3\%$), eight were $0.6\∼1.0g(22.2\%$), and six were $1.1{\∼}1.5g(16.7\%$). The taste of edible flowers was often bitter (twenty one kinds), sweet and sour (seven), somewhat fragrant (six), fishy (three), and others (nine). The pigments of edible flowers were anthoxanthin (twenty seven kinds), flavonoid (twenty three), carotenoid (seventeen), and betanidin (four).

Cotyledonary leaves of tomato cv. Megha were transformed with the hepatitis B virus 's' gene, which encodes surface antigen. Six plant expression cassettes (pHBS, pHER, pEFEHBS, pEFEHER, pSHER and pEFESHER) were used to assay the possible expression levels by agroinfiltration. The maximum transient expression level of 489.5 ng/g D.W. was noted in pEFEHER-infiltrated cotyledonary leaves. Transgenic tomato plants with pEFEHBS and pEFEHER expression cassettes were regenerated and characterized by molecular analysis. The expression of the antigen in the fruits was confirmed by RT-PCR and ELISA analysis. This is the first report on the expression of hepatitis B surface antigen in tomato.
