  • Generally, ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials because of its high strength and hardness. The machining process of ceramics can be characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. In the machining of ceramics, edge chipping and crack propagation are the principal reasons to cause surface integrity deterioration. Such phenomenon can cause not only poor dimensional and geometric accuracy, but also possible failure of the ceramic parts. Ceramics can be machined with traditional method such as grinding and polishing. However, such processes are generally cost-expensive and have low material removal rate. Thus, in this paper, to overcome these problems. BN powder, which gives good cutting property, is added for the fabrication of machinable ceramics by volume of 5,10,15,20,25 and 30%. And, mechanical properties, R-curve behavior and machining tests are carried out to evaluate the machining properties of the manufactured machinable ceramics.

The Effect of Temperature on Stress Corrosion Cracking of AI Brass under Flow

  • The effect of temperature on stress corrosion cracking o f Al-brass used in vessel heat exchanger tube was studied in 3.5% NaCI + 0.1% $NH_4OH$ solution. The SCC test using a CDT(constant displacement test) and the specimens using a SEN(single edge notched) specimens. For setting the environment similar to working environment of a heat exchanger, the specimens was immersed in solution and solution flow onto the specimens were performed. The results are as follows : The latent time of stress corrosion crack occurrence gets shorter, as the temperature gets higher. Dezincification phase showed around the crack occupy wider range, as the temperature gets higher. Zn composition falls under 4% at the dezincifiction area.

직선 전단 시편을 이용한 신장 플랜지성 평가법 연구 (Study on Stretch Flangeability Test Method with Straight Shear Line Specimen)

  • Although the hole expansion test is currently the most commonly used method to evaluate the stretch flangeability of HSS, it has been criticized due to its poor repeatability and reproducibility for test results. This paper focuses on the development of a new measurement method to investigate the stretch flangeability of HSS. Two materials (DP590, DP980) were investigated with a hole expansion test and a developed test method. Test results showed that the developed test method could be used as one stretch flangeability test to help identify relevant parameters of the shearing process to avoid edge cracking.

A transfer matrix method for in-plane bending vibrations of tapered beams with axial force and multiple edge cracks

  • This paper proposes a transfer matrix method for the bending vibration of two types of tapered beams subjected to axial force, and it is applied to analyze tapered beams with an edge or multiple edge open cracks. One beam type is assumed to be reduced linearly in the cross-section height along the beam length. The other type is a tapered beam in which the cross-section height and width with the same taper ratio is linearly reduced simultaneously. Each crack is modeled as two sub-elements connected by a rotational spring, and the method can evaluate the effect of cracking on the desired number of eigenfrequencies using a minimum number of subdivisions. Among the power series available for the solutions, the roots of the differential equation are computed using the Frobenius method. The computed results confirm the accuracy of the method and are compared with previously reported results. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated by examining specific examples, and the effects of cracking and axial loading are carefully examined by a comparison of the single and double tapered beam results.

Effect of Epoxy Cracking on Initial Quench Behavior about High Field Superconducting Magnet

  • The study to be presented related on initial behavior of quench concerned with many considerations, such as epoxy impregnated coil, critical current density related on strain and temperature, winding effect and behavior of internal superconducting wire. Especially, the deformation behavior of coils under magnetic field and thermal contractions at cryogenic temperatures to be dealt with the analytical method related on Fracture Mechanics. From the results, we know that the strain by self weight contribute to epoxy cracking at the edge of deformed coils and the deformation behavior relate on epoxy cracking must be dealt with biaxial loading problem. Then, the epoxy crack on $r\theta-plane$ under biaxial loading have been propagated with inclined crack angle and joined superconducting wire. Also, we can explain transfer of epoxy crack propagation energy from epoxy resin to superconducting wire.

복합재 패치로 보수된 노치형 알루미늄 합금 평판의 음향방출 특성 (Acoustic Emission Characteristics of Notched Aluminum Plate Repaired with a Composite Patch)

  • 본 연구는 편측 노치가 삽입된 A16061-T6 알루미늄 합금 평판 시편에 대해 유리섬유강화플라스틱(GFRP) 복합재 패치의 적층수를 변수로 하여 보수히고, 인장 하중에 따른 시편의 손상 과정을 음향방출법(acoustic emission, AE)으로 실시간 분석하였다. AE 에너지 발생률(AE energy rate), hit 발생률(hit rate), AE 진폭(AE amplitude) 거통과 파형 및 1차 중심주파수(1st peak frequency)의 대역을 조사하여, 시편 파괴시 알루미늄 크랙(Al cracking), 섬유 파단(fiber breakage), 수지 균열(resin cracking), 층간 분리(delamination)로 분류하였다. 시편의 변위를 음향방출 특성에 따라 구간(region) I, II, III으로 나눌 수 있었으며, 패치 자체가 실제 파괴되는 구간인 구간 II를 세부적으로 분석하여 패치의 적층수에 따른 AE 특성 차이를 구하였다.

Fatigue evaluation and CFRP strengthening of diaphragm cutouts in orthotropic steel decks

  • The cracking at the transverse diaphragm cutout is one of the most severe fatigue failures threatening orthotropic steel decks (OSDs), whose mechanisms and crack treatment techniques have not been fully studied. In this paper, full-scale experiments were first performed to investigate the fatigue performance of polished cutouts involving the effect of an artificial geometrical defect. Following this, comparative experimental testing for defective cutouts strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) was carried out. Numerical finite element analysis was also performed to verify and explain the experimental observations. Results show that the combinative effect of the wheel load and thermal residual stress constitutes the external driving force for the fatigue cracking of the cutout. Initial geometrical defects are confirmed as a critical factor affecting the fatigue cracking. The principal stress 6 mm away from the free edge of the cutout can be adopted as the nominal stress of the cutout during fatigue evaluation, and the fatigue resistance of polished cutouts is higher than Grade A in AASHTO specification. The bonded CFRP system is highly effective in extending the fatigue life of the defective cutouts. The present study provides some new insights into the fatigue evaluation and repair of OSDs.

To overcome such problems, in this paper, h-BN powder, which gives good cutting property, is added for the fabrication of machinable ceramics by volume of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%. The objectives of this paper is to evaluate the fracture phenomenon of the tungsten carbide tool and the variation of surface integrity of the manufactured machinable ceramics under various cutting conditions during end mill machining With CNC machining center.

비대칭 접촉하중에 의한 표면균열 전파거동 (Behaviour of edge crack propagation under non-symmetric contact tractions)

  • Considered is non-symmetric contact traction induced by the tilting of a contact body and/or by a far field bulk tensile load to the other body. The problem is under the regime of plane strain. General profile of the contact end is incorporated and partial slip condition is supposed. As an example contact configuration, an indentation of a punch with rounded corners onto a half plane is studied. The variation of the internal stress field due to the tilting and the bulk tension is investigated. An edge crack problem is analyzed to examine the influence of the non-symmetric traction. It is shown that the tilting of a punch does not influence the behaviour of the crack. Rather, the effect of the bulk tension on the cracking behaviour is found considerable.

The effect of particle size on the edge notched disk (END) using particle flow code in three dimension

  • In this study, the effect of particle size on the cracks propagation and coalescence or cracking pattern of the edge notched disc specimens are investigated. Firstly, calibration of PFC3D was performed using Brazilian experimental test output. Then micro parameters were used to build edge notched disc specimen. The horizontal wall of the assembly is let to move downward with a standard low speed of 0.016 m/s. The numerical results show that the tensile cracks are dominant failure pattern for the modeled discs. These tensile cracks initiate from the pre-existing notch tip and propagate parallel to the loading direction then interact with the upper boundary of the modeled specimen. As the size of the balls (ball diameter) decrease the number of tensile cracks increase. The tensile fracture toughness of the samples also decreases as the particle size increases. Understanding the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials such as concretes and rocks is of paramount importance in the stability analyses for engineering structures such as rock slopes, underground structures and tunneling.
