Violin bridge blank cut from maple wood with good quality has typical pattern of the radial direction in the side edge with minimal dispersion. This experimental study was designed and carried out to examine the effect of the physical and macroscopical characteristics on the compressive creep of violin bridge blank which had been imported from European manufacturer. This research arose from the idea that the maple solid wood with heterogeneous wood density and ray direction in the side edge would have uneven rheological property of violin bridge blank which is supposed to be pressed by the tension of strings. Experimentally, the compressive creep of bridge blank became smaller with the higher density of imported maple wood and showed clear density-dependence for the duration of load under the string tension of 5 kgf. Every bridge blank showed the behavior of primary creep stage(stress stabilization) having logarithmic regression creep curve with high correlation coefficient under the designed stress level. Even though the relationship between compressive creep and ray direction on the side edge of bridge was not so clear contrary to expectation, we could conclude that wood density and ray direction should be the quality decisive factors affecting the acoustical characteristics and performance of the bridge, the core member of violin-family bow instruments.
The measure of motor speed using encoder is difficult to detect accurate speed and direction in very low speed because the intervals between an encoder pulse and pulse are long. So various speed estimation techniques were proposed to have the good dynamic performance in low speed. And direction detection is so important as speed measurement in very low speed. But because the conventional direction detection circuit check the direction only 1 time in 1 period of each encoder pulses, so it has long delayed detection time in very low speed, thus accurate detection of direction is difficult. In this paper, we propose a 2 way edge detection method which can detect at the rising and filling edge of each encoder pulses. So it can check the direction 4 times in 1 period of each encoder pulses. Therefore if we use proposed method, we can reduce the detection time as 1/4 than that of conventional circuit and can detect more accurate speed and direction. And computer simulation and experiment is performed to verify the perfomance and effect of proposed circuit and we analyze it's results by comparing with that of conventional circuit.

In this paper, we propose a method of edge detection for noisy image. The proposed method uses a progressive filter for noise reduction and a Sobel operator for edge detection. The progressive filter combines a median filter and a modified rational filter. The proposed method for noise reduction adjusts rational filter direction according to an edge in the image which is obtained by median filtering. Our method effectively attenuates the noise while preserving the image details. Edge detection is performed by a Sobel operator. This operator can be implemented by integer operation and is therefore relatively fast. Our proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Thus, edge detection is well performed. Our proposed method could improve results using further developed Sobel operator. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better edge detection with correct positions than those by existing median and rational filtering methods for noisy image.
We derive a modified version of the cubic convolution scaler to enlarge or reduce the size of digital image with arbitrary ratio. To enhance the edge information of the scaled image and to obtain a high-quality scaled image, the proposed scaler is applied along the direction of an edge. Since interpolation along the direction of an edge has to process nonuniformly sampled data, the kernel of the cubic convolution scaler is modified to interpolate the data. The proposed scaling scheme can be used to resize pictures in various formats in a transcoding system that transforms a bit stream compressed at one bit rate into one compressed at another bit rate. In many applications, such as transcoders, the resolution conversion is very important for changing the image size while maintaining high quality of the scaled image. We show experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interpolation method. The proposed scheme provides clearer edges, without artifacts, in the resized image than do conventional schemes. The algorithm exhibits significant improvement in the minimization of information loss when compared with the conventional interpolation algorithms.

In this paper, we proposed an extended edge-based line averaging method for deinterlacing with restricted search range. Conversion from interlaced signal to non-interlaced signal is one of important issues. Conventional deinterlacing algorithms usually utilize edge-based line average algorithm(ELA) within pixel-by-pixel approach. However, it is very sensitive to noise and variation of intensity. To reduce the sensitivity, the proposed method adopts a block-by-block approach and provides reliable direction of edge. Simulation results show that it provides a better performance than other pixel-by-pixel ELA-based methods.

Impact behaviors of Aluminum Honeycombs Sandwich Panel(AHSP) by drop weight test were investigated. Two types of specimens with 1/2" and 1/4" cell size were tested by two impactors which are weight of $5.25\textrm{kg}_{\textrm{f}}$ and $11.9\textrm{kg}_{\textrm{f}}$. Parametric studies were achieved including the impactor weight and impact sites which consist face, long-edge, short-edge, and point of the specimen. Face one of impact sites was the strongest and short-edge one of impact sites was the weakest. The damaged area of AHSP was enlarged with the increase of impactor weight that is equal to impact energy. After 3 point bending test, fracture modes of AHSP were analyzed with AE counts. Lower facesheet was fractured in the long-edge direction and then separated between facesheet and core. In the short-edge direction after core wrinkled, lower facesheet tear occurred. Impact behavior by FE analysis were increased localized damage in fast velocity because the faster velocity of the impact was, the smaller the stress of core was. Consequently, impactor weight had an effect on widely damaged area, while the impact velocity was caused on the localized damaged area.aged area.

An algorithm for estimating the lane departure of a vehicle is derived and implemented based on an EDF(edge distribution function) obtained from gray-level images taken by a CCD camera mounted on a vehicle. As the function of edge direction, the EDF is aimed to show the distribution of edge direction and to estimate the possibility of lane departure with respect to its symmetric axis and local mamma. The EDF plays important roles: 1) It reduces noisy effects caused by dynamic road scene. 2) It makes possible lane identification without camera modeling. 3) It also leads LDW(lane departure warning) problem to a mathematical approach. When the situations of lane departure such that the vehicle approaches to lane marks or runs in the vicinity of the lane marks are occurred, the orientation of lane marks in images is changed, and then the situations are immediately reflected to the EDF. Accordingly, the lane departure is estimated by studying the shape of the EDF. The proposed EDF-based algorithm enhanced the adaptability to cope with the random and dynamic road environments, and eventually led to the reliable LDW system.

In this paper, We propose a new technique extract efficiently a car number plate based on edge projection. In order to obtain the region of car number plate, we use a motive that the luminance differences between the number plate background and characters. And, we introduce a projection technique to obtain character parts based on edge image. In vertical direction. we propose a shape matching method. Specially the new number plate standard has more characters than the old one in horizontal direction and, it is efficiently used to extract the number plate. Therefore, the proposed technique is useful to the new number plate standard. In simulation results. We have illustrated that our algorithm can recognize different number plates with a success ration of 90%.

In this study, in order to achieve the uniformity of mechanical properties and microstructures of a hot-rolled coil in the transversal direction, the edge mask device is newly device is newly developed and installed at the upper laminar-flow cooling head in the run out table, which controls the transversal temperature of strip with enco panel and bar edge heater. The device that is transversally movable prevents the temperature drop of strip edge by blocking the cooling water into the strip edge. So, the pattern of edge mask set-up condition of the device was derived by analyzing the characteristics of strip temperature and mechanical properties according to the on-line application of edge mask.
In this paper, we propose a new IPC(Interlace to Progressive Conversion) method based on ELA(EDge Line based Average) interpolation using detecting the reliable edge direction. Existing ELA algorithms execute linear interpolation using edge direction without considering noises. In noisy images, these algorithms degrade quality because if interpolation based on the wrong edge direction. Out scheme is able to solve the problem of existing ELA algorithms in noisy images. First, filter a noisy pixel and estimate sizes of the noiseless orginal pixed and the noise, repectively. Then, considering the size of the noise, calculate weights of ELA and vertical interpolation. If noises exist after IPC, these could be eliminated by post filtering. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm has about $1{\sim}2$ dB better performance than those of existing ELA algorithms.
