This paper presents a new descriptor, named Histograms of Prominent Edge Directions (HPED), for the recognition of facial expressions in a person-independent environment. In this paper, we raise the issue of sampling error in generating the code-histogram from spatial regions of the face image, as observed in the existing descriptors. HPED describes facial appearance changes based on the statistical distribution of the top two prominent edge directions (i.e., primary and secondary direction) captured over small spatial regions of the face. Compared to existing descriptors, HPED uses a smaller number of code-bins to describe the spatial regions, which helps avoid sampling error despite having fewer samples while preserving the valuable spatial information. In contrast to the existing Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) that uses the histogram of the primary edge direction (i.e., gradient orientation) only, we additionally consider the histogram of the secondary edge direction, which provides more meaningful shape information related to the local texture. Experiments on popular facial expression datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed HPED against existing descriptors in a person-independent environment.
The watermarking is a method to achieve the copyright protection of multimedia contents. Among several media, the left documents show very peculiar properties: block/line/word patterning, clear separation between foreground and background areas. So algorithms specific to the text documents are required that meet those properties. This paper proposes a novel watermarking algorithm for the grayscale text document images. The algorithm inserts the watermark signals through the edge direction histograms. A concept of sub-image consistency is developed that the sub-images have similar shapes in terms of edge direction histograms. Using Korean, Chinese, and English document images, the concept is evaluated and proven to be valid over a wide range of document images. To insert watermark signals, the edge direction histogram is modified slightly. The experiments were performed on various document images and the algorithm was evaluated in terms of imperceptibility and robustness.

H.264 adopts new coding tools such as intra-prediction, loop filter, etc. The adoption of these tools enables an H.264-coded bitstream to have more information compared with previous standards. In this paper we proposed an effective spatial error concealment method for H.264. Among the information included in an H.264-coded bitstream, we use intra-mode for recovering a damaged block. This is because prediction direction in intra-mode is highly correlated to the edge direction of a lost macroblock. We first estimate the edge direction using intra-modes of blocks adjacent to a lost macroblock, and classify the area in a damaged macroblock into the edge and the flat area. And then our method recovers pixel values in the edge area using edge-directed interpolation, and recovers pixel values in the flat area using weighted interpolation. Simulation results show the proposed method yields better video quality than conventional approaches by 0.35 to 5.48 dB.

Our study proposes the methods of distinguishing vehicle types using the interval and size of the car. The car videos converts the basic RGB model to Gray model for use and through Canny Edge Direction, it eliminates the background of the car while obtaining feature points through the detection of contours.

Deinterlacing methods are usually divided into inter-field deinterlacing and intra-field deinterlacing. The most common method of intra-field deinterlacing is the linear method which uses line doubling or line averaging. There are also some edge-enhancement methods such as ELA(Edge Based Line Average) and modified ELA. However, the linear interpolation generates edge blurring or staircase artifacts. The methods using ELA or modified ELA show poor deinterlacing at various types of edges because of insufficient edge information in a certain direction. This paper presents an intra-field deinterlacing algorithm that considers the interpolation based on edges in 7 directions and an edge line in the horizontal direction. It demonstrates better picture quality by reducing the staircase phenomenon of object in the conventional methods.

Pixel classification is one of basic image processing issues. The general characteristics of the pixels belonging to various classes are discussed and the radical principles of pixel classification are given. At the same time. a pixel classification scheme based on image direction measure is proposed. As a typical application instance of pixel classification, an adaptive multi-level median filter is presented. An image can be classified into two types of areas by using the direction information measure, that is. smooth area and edge area. Single direction multi-level median filter is used in smooth area. and multi-direction multi-level median filter is taken in the other type of area. What's more. an adaptive mechanism is proposed to adjust the type of the filters and the size of filter window. As a result. we get a better trade-off between preserving details and noise filtering.
This paper describes an image processing algorithm capable of recognizing road lanes by using a CDF(cumulative distribution function). The CDF is designed for the model function of road lanes. Based on the assumptions that there are no abrupt changes in the direction and location of road lanes and that the intensity of lane boundaries differs from that of the background, we formulated the CDF, which accumulates the edge magnitude for edge directions. The CDF has distinctive peak points at the vicinity of lane directions due to the directional and the positional continuities of a lane. To obtain lane-related information a scatter diagram was constructed by collecting edge pixels, of which the direction corresponds to the peak point of the CDF, then the principal axis-based line fitting was performed for the scatter diagram. Noises can cause many similar features to appear and to disappear in an image. Therefore, to reduce the noise effect a recursive estimator of the CDF was introduced, and also to prevent false alarms or miss detection a scene understanding index (DUI) was formulated by the statistical parameters of the CDF. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in real time on video data obtained from a test vehicle driven on a typical highway.
In this paper, we propose an edge dependent interpolation (EDI) method based on adaptive search range. The proposed EDI method uses the vector matching to determine the edge direction, and the vector matching process is terminated when the previous sum of absolute difference (SAD) is smaller than the next one. The adaptive search range method enables the EDI algorithm to estimate edge direction more accurately and to reduce the computational complexity. The experimental results show that the proposed method produces better performance than conventional algorithms.

In this paper, a force control algorithm for edge following task is suggested. Through the contact state modeling between rigid part and end-effector of robot, contact force and contact angle that are essencial parameters to build the control strategies for following movement of end-effector are derived. From these two parameters, we discriminate the every contact state into 8 cases and calculate the new moving position and direction simply. For the experiment. RX90 robot from Staubli with robot language V$^{+}$ is applied and F/T sensor is attached to the wrist of robot with RCC. Finally, 3 edge following experiments including the following of corner point are executed with successful results.s.
For B-mode ultrasound images, we propose an image enhancement algorithm based on a multi-resolution approach, which consists of edge enhancing and noise reducing procedures. Edge enhancement processing is applied sequentially to coarse-to-fine resolution images obtained from wavelet-transformed data. In each resolution, the structural features of each pixel are examined through eigen analysis. Then, if a pixel belongs to an edge region, we perform two-step filtering: that is, directional smoothing is conducted along the tangential direction of the edge to improve continuity and directional sharpening is conducted along the normal direction to enhance the contrast. In addition, speckle noise is alleviated by proper attenuation of the wavelet coefficients of the homogeneous regions at each band. This region-based speckle-reduction scheme is differentiated from other methods that are based on the magnitude statistics of the wavelet coefficients. The proposed algorithm enhances edges regardless of changes in the resolution of an image, and the algorithm efficiently reduces speckle noise without affecting the sharpness of the edge. Hence, compared with existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm considerably improves the subjective image quality without providing any noticeable artifacts.
