Permanent Magnet Eddy Current Analysis of SPM Synchronous Motors according to Magnet Shapes

  • This paper presents the comparison study of permanent magnet (PM) eddy current of concentrated winding type surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) with different rare-earth magnet shapes. The fractional slot winding having 10 poles and 12 slots is studied. The PM eddy current is analyzed to compare for each shape by 2 dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA). The eddy current and their loss of particular position of PM as well as their distributions are displayed for each model. The effect of partly enlarged air-gap made by PM shape to PM eddy current is compared.

  • This paper examines permanent magnet eddy current couplings and brakes. Specifically, the effect of permanent magnet magnetization patterns on the magnetic field and force production is investigated. The eddy current couplings and brakes employ high energy-product neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets that act on iron-backed copper drums to provide torque transfer from motor to load without mechanical contact. A 2-dimensional finite element modeling is performed to predict the electromagnetic behavior and the torque-speed characteristics of permanent magnet type eddy current couplings and brakes under constant speed operation.

  • Coil inductor has been used widely as an electromagnet, because of the high magnetic filed resulting from the voltage applied to the coil. In this study the coils were used in vibration suppression as an actuator. The control system consists of a coil attached in aluminum beam and a permanent magnet set at its bottom. This actuation method is easy to be incorporated into the system and allows significant forces to be applied without contacting with the structure. Three types of coils (cylindrical type, square type, Circular sheet type) were employed in vibration suppression of cantilever beam. The positive position feedback (PPF) controller was applied to the magnet-coil actuator to suppress the first mode of vibration. Experimental results showed that the cylindrical type and square type coil made good vibration suppression efficiency under PPF controller than their eddy current damper. However, there was minimal difference for the circular sheet type coil if compared with its eddy current damper.

  • A contactless eddy current type braking system is developed to take advantages of the recent brake system which uses hydraulic force can show high efficiency in a certain velocity region, but not in a high velocity region, and has initial response delay time and pressure build-up time which make stopping distance longer. These are the limits of mechanical brake system of a contact type, which makes a concept brake system required. So, in this paper, the contactless brake system .of a inductive current type is chosen instead of hydraulic brake system. This brake system can be used almost forever for being no wear and contributed to lightening weight of a vehicle. Besides, the contactless brake system can be used as that of electric or solar car with anti-lock brake system. The analysis of induced electromotive force and braking torque obtained with theoretical approximate model, the design of a braking system and a nonlinear controller, and the results of simulation of the ABS, experiment are included.

  • Most magnetic bearings are based on the attractive force between the magnets and ferrous materials. One of the disadvantages of such attractive type magnetic bearings is the instability so that an active control device is necessary to operate bearing successfully. In this study a repulsive type magnetic bearing is analyzed which uses eddy current as a force source. The load capacities are analyzed for the various gap sizes, the rotor velocities and the frequencies of current supplied to electromagnet. Analytic Results show that as the gap size decreases, the levitation and drag forces increase, while the number of poles increasqs, the drag force decreases in the higher linear velocity region. Experimental results show that as the gap size decreases the levitation and the drag force increase, and as the velocity of rotor increases, the drag is larger than the levitation force up to certain velocity. But after that, the levitation is larger than the drag force. As the frequency of the current increases the levitation and drag decreases while the thickness of rotor gets thicker the forces decrease because of increase in eddy current loss.

The contactless magnetic brakes make use of the braking force from the eddy current generated by moving source and currently used for the secondary brakes of heavy trucks, buses and rail vehicles. This study aims to design the magnetization pattern of a permanent magnet type eddy current brake system to maximize the braking force. The analysis of the brake system is based on the two-dimensional finite element analysis. We use the sequential linear programming as the optimizer and the adjoint variable method for the sensitivity analysis.

  • This paper deals with eddy current loss of magnetic coupling with radial permanent magnet (PM) using analytical method such as a space harmonic method. Superposition of two kinds analysis model is used to analyze eddy current loss induced in inner PM and outer PM of magnetic coupling. When the eddy current is induced, the environmental temperature increases, and the permanent magnet(PM) characteristics are degraded because the performance of PM is greatly influenced by temperature rise. Hence, the calculation of eddy current loss becomes an important factor in the magnetic coupling. In order to analyze eddy current loss, first, on the basis of the magnetic vector potential and two-dimensional(2-D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solutions of the radial magnetized PM are obtained. And we obtain the analytical solutions for the eddy current density produced by permanent magnet. Lastly, analytical solutions for eddy current loss are derived by using equivalent, electrical resistance calculated from magnet volume and analytical solution for eddy current density. This analytical results are validated by comparing with the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA).

와전류 제동프레임의 구조해석 및 최적설계 (Structural Analysis and Optimal Design of Eddy Current Brake Frame)

  • The eddy current brake system is a non-contact brake based on the mutual relation between the rail and the frame. Consequently, the accuracy is required in estimating the stress concentration and the deformation of the eddy current brake system. In this paper, the static analysis considering the gravity and the suction force for the deformation and the stress concentration of the main frame of the initially designed eddy current brake system was carried out. The shape of the I-type beam obtained from the optimization was analyzed and compared with the initial model. Also, the initial model was modified based on the optimization model and the result was verified to have the acceptable improvement.

증기발생기 전열관의 비파괴 탐상용 차등형 와전류 탐촉자 개발 (Development of Differential Type Eddy Current Probe for NDT Evaluation of the Steam Generator Tube)

  • 원자력 발전소 증기발생기의 전열관은 전열면으로서의 역할과 방사능 차단벽의 역할로서 중요하며, 증기발생기 튜브의 폭발은 원자력 발전소 사고에 관계된다. 증기발생기 전열관 재료로는 Incone1600이 사용되고 있으며, 이 재료가 금속이면서 비자성이기 때문에 와전류 탐상법으로 전열관의 결함을 탐지하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 탐상 감도를 향상시키기 위하여 차등형 와전류 탐촉자를 개발하였으며, 개발된 차등형 와전류 탐촉자의 성능검사를 위해 Inconel600과 자기적 성질이 비슷하고 구하기 쉬운 SUS304로 가로 100mm, 세로 100mm, 그리고 두께 10mm인 평판에 선형결함과 원형결함을 가공하여 기준시편으로 제작하였다. 제작된 차등형 와전류 탐촉자를 사용하여, 자화주파수 50kHz, lift-off 0.4mm에서 직경이 0.25mm이고, 깊이가 0.2mm 크기의 결함까지 측정이 가능하였다.
