Data were collect from 45 institutions(schools from kindergarten to senior-high, special education institutes, and social welfare institutions) by self-report questionnaire, and the subjects of the study were 386 mothers in Seoul whose children were attending the schools or institutions. Findings according to socio-demographic variables are as follows: 1. Mothers with disabled children in this study thought their quality of life as average degree. 2. The younger the mothers and children, the higher the quality of life was. 3. The higher the educational level and monthly income, the higher the quality of life was. 4. There was no statistically significant difference between the existence and nonexistence of spouse, and between the existence and nonexistence of religion as well. Findings analyzed by multiple regression are as follows: 1. Among 7 independent variables 'self-esteem'(${\beta}$=.49, p<.001), 'social supports'(${\beta}$=.15, p<.01), and 'socio-economic status'(${\beta}$=.11, p<.05) were found to be statistically significant in quality of life in mothers, while the rests were found not significant. 2. 'Self-esteem' was found to be the most influencing variable, meaning that the psychological factor such as self-esteem is more important than environmental factors in qualities of lives in mothers. 3. The total amount of explanation of the model was Adjusted R square=.301, so that it can be said about 30% can be explained among total variance of the qualities of lives in mothers with disabled children. Conclusions and recommendations based on the results above are: First, it is strongly recommended to conduct programs promoting self-esteem in mothers with disabled children, and to include 'self-esteem' hereafter in the studies related to qualities of lives in mothers with disabled children. Second, comprehensive and practical countermeasures should to be formulated to back up expenses for education and medical care, purchasing relative tools and equipments, plus helping to find jobs.

  • This study analysed the complicated introduction process of IPTV in Korea, based on the rent seeking theory which is one of an useful economic theory for explaining the dynamic interaction between government and entrepreneurs. Rent seeking theory describes the possibility of lobbying for economic regulations or regulatory capture which refers to collusion between firms and the government agencies assigned to regulate them. The introduction of IPTV(Internet Protocol TV) in Korea was the most controversial policy issue since the beginning of new media business of cable TV in 1995. In addition to the ordinary conflict between the old and new entrepreneurs, IPTV caused the bureaucratic conflicts between the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Korean Broadcasting Commission (Two regulation agencies were merged into KCC(Korean Communications Commission) in 2008). Through the process all related policy players, including the government, pursued their own rent, and it caused vicious circle of continuous rent seeking and mutual distrust among players. Finally, all-directional lobby of pre-IPTV companies brought about the successful entrance to IPTV market and the enactment of IPTV special law which includes deregulation compared to the existing Broadcast Act. Considering the convergence trend of media related laws it means going against the times. Until now, the conflict phenomena occurring in broadcast industry were mostly explained based on the sociological conflict theory. However, the result of this study shows the usefulness and necessity of rent seeking theory because it gives an economic explanation of conflict behavior.

  • We investigate determinants of fund investment flows using Korean equity investment funds. Unlike previous studies which analyzed net-flows (inflow minus outflow), we analyze fund investment inflows and outflows separately that should properly reflect investors' fund selection and redemption decision. We find similar effects of past return, fund age on net-flows to existing studies based on US market data. The analysis of determinants of inflows shows that inflows are related to past return, fund age and sales fee as net-flows. In contrast, outflows are found to behave quite differently from inflows. Apparently, asymmetry exists between fund investment inflows and outflows at the Korean fund selection market. Specifically, high past returns increase fund investment inflows while increase, rather than decrease, fund outflows. Moreover, 'convexity' is detected both in inflows and outflows: higher past returns accelerate outflows as well as inflows. Effects of sales fee also differ between inflows and outflows. In the 'affiliated' fund sample, sales fee is negatively related to inflows while positively related to outflows. In the 'unaffiliated' fund sample, sales fee is positively related to inflows, but no significant relationship exists with outflows. Empirical findings of this paper imply that the rational investor's fund selection view cannot provide a consistent explanation of the Korean fund selection market. In particular, the positive and convex relationship between past returns and fund outflows is inconsistent with the rational investor view. The fact that investor's fund investment appears to display 'disposition effect', which has been reported by studies of individual investors' stock investment behaviour suggests that the behavioral finance view should be a part of explanation for the Korean fund selection market. In addition, the strikingly different patterns between the 'affiliated' funds and the 'unaffiliated' funds, imply that brokers' incentive structure is another prevailing factor for fund investment flows.

  • This study analyzed how alternative investment goods would affect a market in a neighboring shopping area in order to provide parties involved in the investment market of this neighboring shopping area with standards which would help them when they try to make a reasonable determination. The study estimated forms and explanation power of the effects of a bid rate of a neighboring shopping area, and came up with those results as follows. Increases in the representative macro economic indicators, the composite stock price index and the fluctuation rate of land price, including the real estate business would have a positive influence on the market of the neighboring shopping area as playing a circumstantial evidence of market recovery and yet, the increase in interest rate, the alternative investment goods, would reduce the relative price-earnings ratio which would, eventually, negatively affect the charm of the investment in the market of the neighboring shopping area. The study, now, understands that housing with a feature of consumers' goods and neighboring shopping area with a feature of investment goods would not have great concern with each other as they are observed to be two different markets from an aspect of interactionism.

  • Domestic corporation in High-tech industry invest huge amounts of economic resources into the Research & Development(R&D) department, especially into new product development. It might be an adequate explanation for this phenomena that as the product life cycle gets shorter, and environmental uncertainty necessitates core competency from every corporation, new product planning becomes a vital going concern for the company to keep and increase its market share This could originate from an inappropriate combination between new products and other marketing mix elements. But it could be that the main cause of these failures com from unsatisfactory customers. In the other words, R&D department failed to sufficiently recognize market needs. This could be solved through integration between marketing department R&D department This study supposes that integration between these two departments-marketing department and R&D department influences the success of new product. In other to prove this, this study examined the determinant factors which influence the integration and the relationships

  • Background: This study explored perspectives of health-care providers on childhood cancer treatment in Kenya. Materials and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 104 health-care providers in January and February 2013. Results: Seventy six percent of the health-care providers believed cancer to be curable. More doctors than other health-care providers had this positive opinion (p=0.037). The majority of health-care providers (92%) believed that most children with cancer will not be able to finish their treatment due to financial difficulties. They considered that prosperous highly-educated parents adhere better with treatment (88%) and that doctors adhere better with treatment for prosperous highly-educated parents (79%). According to 74% of health-care providers, quality of care is better for prosperous highly-educated parents (74%). Most health-care providers reported giving more explanation (71%), work with greater accuracy (70%) and use less difficult vocabulary (55%) to prosperous more educated families. Only 34% of health-care providers reported they feel more empathy towards patients from prosperous families. Reasons for non-adherence with the protocol according to health-care providers are: family refuses drugs (85%), inadequate supply of drugs at pharmacy (79%), child looks ill (75%), and financial difficulties of parents (69%). Conclusions: Health-care providers' health beliefs and attitudes differ for patients with families having high versus low socio-economic backgrounds.

  • This study investigates the status of English scores in the Korean labor market. We provide an empirical explanation of how English scores affect labor performances in Korea. Specifically, we focus on the effects of TOEIC scores on college graduates' job opportunity and wage premium. Our empirical tests for TOEIC scores are implemented in three dimensions: (1) Screening effects (2) Signaling effects (3) Wage effects. The results are as follows. First, we find the positive correlation between TOEIC scores and job opportunities, which implies that TOEIC scores play an important role in employee selection process. Second, our tests give the same results when it comes to job seeker's use of TOEIC scores as signaling instrument. That is, high TOEIC scores have positive signaling effects in the labor market. However, there also exists disadvantage effect of low TOEIC scores, in that job applicants with TOEIC scores below certain level are even more disadvantageous than those with no TOEIC scores. Finally, wage premium of TOEIC scores are found, even when other variables (e.g. GPA) are controlled or we use the instrumental variable estimate.
