  • When it comes to explaining the relationship between inventory investment and business fluctuations, the production smoothing theory and the stock-out avoidance theory take contradictory stances. Decision-making related to inventory investments of corporations is thought to be influenced by both motives, but the relative sizes or directions of their respective influences can differ depending upon the phase of the business cycle. Against this backdrop, this paper differs from existing studies in that it theoretically tests the relative significances of the production smoothing and stock-out avoidance motives in the inventory investment dynamics, while placing its analytical focus on determining the existence and patterns of the asymmetric dynamics of inventory investment over the business cycle phases. To this end this paper sets up a non-linear model that is expanded from the existing linear inventory investment model, and checks whether its predictive power is better than that of the existing model. The results of analysis confirm the nature of the asymmetric dynamics of inventory investment over the business cycle phases. A stock-out avoidance motive appears but there is no significant production smoothing motive in boom times. In downturns, in contrast, the stock-out avoidance motive is insignificant, but a quality of asymmetric dynamics in which changes in inventory cause the deepening of recessions, due to the non-convexity of production costs proposed by Ramey (1991), is detected. This paper confirms that a model considering the asymmetric dynamics of inventory investment can have better predictive power than one that does not consider it, through within-sample and out-of-sample predictions and various predictive power tests. These research results are expected to be useful for economic forecasting, through their enhancement of the understandings of the inventory investment dynamics and of the nature of its business cycle destabilization.

  • In this study, when cotton fabrics dyed with Direct dyes are treated under various resin concentration 2, 4, 8, 12, $14\%$ with ureaformaldehyde(UF) and melamineformaldehyde(MF) resin which can be imparted the crease recovery to textiles, chang of properties on lightfastness, washfastness, crease recovery, breaking strength, etc. and color changes are investigated. the results are as follows 1) Color difference(${\Delta}$E) increased but K/S value decreased according to the increase of resin cone. such tendency showed that MF treated fabrics and soaping fabrics were evident than UF treated fabrics and non-soaping fabrics. 2) In lightfastness, ${\Delta}$E and K/S value of resin treated fabrics were reduced as compared with untreated fabrics according to the increase of resin cone. The lower ${\Delta}$E and K/S value of MF than ${\Delta}$E and K/S value of UF showed low lightfastness of MF. pH of resin treted fabrics was almost unaffected with lightfastness. 3) In washfastness, ${\Delta}$E and K/S value of resin treated fabrics decreased slightly as com-pared with untreated fabricsaccording tothe increase of resin cone. The ${\Delta}$E and K/S value of MF decreased lower than UF. But in the case of the higher resin cone. than about $8\%$, they were not almost differentiated. 4) As resin cone. increased, crease recovery considerably increased but breaking strength and elongation decreased. The fabrics treated with UF were good crease recovery, whereas the fabrics treated with MF were good breaking strength. 5) Soaping appeared to improve the lightfastness, washfastness, crease recovery but appeared to work adverse effect on breaking strength.

  • This study is a second analysis of the 7th Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families. And, it is a descriptive survey research for comparing parental and health characteristics of 2 groups of workers and non-workers. For this, it has used crossover analysis and logistic regression analysis with the subjects of mothers of preschoolers - of 697 females in total, aged between 19 and 64. Based on the result of the logistic regression analysis, we have discovered a few factors inducing the females to participate in more economic activities. The factors are as follows : baby sitters available, the more number of child care centers, the more helps of baby sitting from the females' parents and in-law parents and physical activities less than 3 times a week. In contrast, however, the more preschoolers they have, the less likely they are to take an active part in the economy. Against the backdrop, the government should develop social service systems to encourage various child care services and to foster 'child raising mothers-friendly' environments not only in families but in workplaces. All this is to improve the health characteristics of preschoolers' mothers in a more healthy way' and to strike a balance between work and family.

  • Bacterial wilt is a re-emerging disease on dry bean and can affect many other crop species within the Fabaceae. The causal agent, Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens (CFF), is a small, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that is seed-transmitted. Infections in the host become systemic, leading to wilting and economic loss. Clean seed programs and bactericidal seed treatments are two critical management tools. This study characterizes the efficacies of five bactericidal chemicals against CFF. It was hypothesized that this bacterium was capable of forming biofilms, and that the cells within biofilms would be more tolerant to bactericidal treatments. The minimum biocide eradication concentration assay protocol was used to grow CFF biofilms, expose the biofilms to bactericides, and enumerate survivors compared to a non-treated control (water). Streptomycin and oxysilver bisulfate had EC95 values at the lowest concentrations and are likely the best candidates for seed treatment products for controlling seed-borne bacterial wilt of bean. The results showed that CFF formed biofilms during at least two phases of the bacterial wilt disease cycle, and the biofilms were much more difficult to eradicate than their planktonic counterparts. Overall, biofilm formation by CFF is an important part of the bacterial wilt disease cycle in dry edible bean and antibiofilm bactericides such as streptomycin and oxysilver bisulfate may be best suited for use in disease management.

  • This study aims to examine changes in the location and spatial structure of the Korean manufacturing industry and to consider the factors that influenced them. From the 1960s to the 1980s, under Korea's export-oriented industrial policy and location policy of large-scale industrial complexes, a manufacturing spatial structure was centered on the Seoul Metropolitan Region and the Southeastern Region. Since the mid-1990s, with the emergence of economic globalization and strengthening corporate competitiveness, technology- and knowledge-intensive manufacturing and R&D activities have been concentrated in the Seoul Metropolitan Region. On the other hand, as the overseas relocation of assembly plants accelerated, the decline of industrial cities in the non-Metropolitan Region progressed. Since the 2010s, manufacturing and start-up activities have become more concentrated in the Seoul Metropolitan Region, showing signs of expanding to the adjacent northern Chungcheong Region. This results from changes in the global value chains followed by overseas relocation of production functions at the global level, and concentration of knowledge-intensive manufacturing and R&D activities in the Seoul Metropolitan Region at the national level, which are reflected in the spatial structure of the manufacturing industry.

  • The purpose of this presentation is to review the situation of the Cheju broiler industry peculiarized with the integrated production and marketing system to some degree, which is not prevailed in the whole broiler industry in Korea, so as to study the case of the Cheju industry from the viewpoint of an economic integration. The economic integration in the broiler industry is grouped into three patterns: non-integration, quasi-integration and complete integration, which generally exist under the different type of market competition. The quasi-integration tends to be formed at all phases where the complete integration is not fully implemented, but the non-integration has begun to change its nature into partially integrated structure. The Cheju broiler industry is characterized by the geographical location of isolated market so that factor supplies and broiler products are marketed in the different conditions from those of mainland Korea, somewhat in an oligopolistic pattern. It was since early 1980's that the industry successfully had three dressing plants merged into one by virtue of entire growers ownership, which opened an era of an integrated industry centered on the function of dressing birds. The case of Cheju broiler industry today is to be referred to as a typical quasi-integration which is coordinated the function between growing and dressing birds directly and extended the functional cooperation to distribution of products indirectly, while factor supplies are traded independently. As a result of a quasi-integration, the growers are able to receive a fixed price set by the dressing plant of growers that has the power to adjust the supply of and demand for broilers produced and consumed in the Island. There are some problems, however, in the integration of the Cheju broiler industry, stemming mainly from the process of the structure change, : 1) the difficulty of controlling the production of broilers, 2) continuing pressure on the integration by non-integrated sectors, 3) the challenge on the stabilized broiler market from the mainland, 4) limited effectiveness of consumer education activities, and 5) lack of leadership for the industry development through integration. It is projected that the partially integrated Cheju broiler industry will be continually developed toward the direction of a complete integration in due course, as the currently independent supply sectors are to be backward integrated. The case of the Cheju broiler integration, therefore, could be used as a reference for making the whole broiler industry in Korea develop toward the integrated structure in the future.

  • Objective : To estimate the annual economic costs attributable to cigarette smoking in Korea. Methods : The costs were classified as being direct medical and non-medical costs, indirect costs and others. We focused on those costs related that are incurred in the treatment of selected diseases (cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and cancers), which have been proven to be caused by smoking. In addition to the basic costs of treatment, the additional amount of costs occurred due to smoking was obtained by computing the population attributable risk (PAR%) caused by smoking. To compute the PAR%, relative risks of smoking to the number of outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and the death were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model, respectively. Our major data source was the 'Korea Medical Insurance Corporation (KMIC) cohort study,' which was composed of a total of 115,682 male and 67,932 female beneficiaries who had complete records of their smoking histories in the year of 1992. Results : The annual costs that could be attributable to smoking were estimated to be in the range of 2,847,500 million Won to 3,959,100 million Won. The maximum estimate of 3,959,100 million Won includes 233,100 million Won for medical costs, 5,100 million Won for transportation costs, 27,600 million Won for care giver's economic costs, 69,100 million Won in productivity loss, 3,435,000 million Won lost because of premature death, 172,100 million Won in costs resulting from passive smoke inhalation and 17,100 million Won for costs that resulted from fires that were caused by careless smoking. Conclusion : Our study confirms that the magnitude of the economic burden of smoking to Korean society is substantial. Therefore, this study provides strong evidence that there is a strong need for a national policy of tobacco control in Korea.

  • It is about the study of life satisfaction with type of employment(entrepreneur/paid employee), social factor(social capital), and psychological factor(self efficacy) in Seoul. The empirical results using Seoul Welfare Panel showed that psychological factor was the most powerful, and economic (household income levels) and social factor were in order. Type of employment was also significantly affected on life satisfaction, and paid employee's life satisfaction was higher than entrepreneur's one. In case of paid employee, psychological(self-efficacy) and social(norms, informal networks of participation, non-profit trust) factor in addition to the economic factor were significantly. In case of entrepreneur, economic and psychological factor and only norm among social factors were significant. Finally, The implications for politicians and local public officials were reported.

  • Option pricing model in finance has been applied to price non-financial options, called real options. The real option valuation method is ideally suited to irreversible decision making under uncertainty, including the need to determine the optimal time to act and even change between alternative courses of action as information is collected. Therefore, the real option valuation method is expected to provide a superior and less subjective approach to determining optimal strategies for water resources supply projects, which have been reported to have huge risks due to uncertainties, and investors and policy makers need to build an optimal strategy - when and if to invest - with uncertainties and managerial flexibilities considered.

  • This article is to estimate the fishing frequency function in Korean recreational fishery with respect to socio-economic characteristics of anglers. First, the study described the characteristics of the entire angler population on the view points of 9 socio-economic variables. And then, the study divided the total angler population into three groups of in-land, sea, and mixed angler populations in order to investigate the differences in their characteristics. The study could confirm the existence of differences in regions, size of regions, and educational levels between the in - land and the sea angler populations by testing heterogeneity in the frequency table. The fishing frequency function is estimated using Poisson regression model in order to accomodate the count data(non-negative discrete random variable) aspects of the fishing frequency. However, the model specification error is found due to overdispersion of data. The model exhibits the lack of goodness of fit. The negative binomial regression model is adopted to cure the overdispersion of the data as an alternative estimation methodology. Finally, the study can confirm overdispersion does not exist in the model any more and the goodness of fit improved significantly to the reasonable level. The results of estimation of fishing frequency population modeled by the negative binomial regression models are following. The three variables of region, sex, and education have effects on the decision making process of fishing frequency in the case of in-land recreation fishery. On the other hand, the three variables of sex, age, and marriage status do the same job in the case of sea angler population. Among the left-over variables, both income and use of Internet variables now affect on the process in mixed angler population. Finally, the results of whole angler population show that all of the previous variables are proven to be statistically significant due to the summation of data with all three sub-groups of angler population.
