  • Eco-friendly material and implementation methods have become important along with the existing standardized maintenance concept for the irrigation and flood control. However, the intrinsic function of the hydraulic structure is water supply and disaster prevention. Therefore, the material and work methods should be considered both eco-friendliness, durability and safety which are prerequisite elements to maintain the engineering function. In this study eco-friendly material and work methods would be classified into the vegetation based system, eco-friendly concrete system and stone-material system according to the characteristics of material. The quality standard for durability followed KS specification and related regulations. The quality standard for safety and eco-friendliness was set after literature review, and the database was developed using the standard. The structure applicable to onsite - the eco-friendly material and work method were classified based on the function and material of the hydraulic structure. Finally, database has been established for convenient management and selection of the proper material and work method. The eco-friendly material and work method could be searched easily for the convenience of the users, and the web-based data system has been developed for continuous registration of the material and work methods to be developed in the future.

  • Technology based civilization has made a sustained advancement, resulting in economic growth and material prosperity. The outcome was the beginning of environmental destruction. Especially, in regard to construction, it has been recognized as a key culprit for pollution. As such, the construction industry has recently shown interest in the environment, as it has been applying environment friendly method of construction and reducing wastes. As the number of old common housing increases in our country, reconstruction and remodeling are implemented as a means of improvement. However, it can be said that remodeling is the inevitable option because of cost and environmental problems associated with reconstruction. As part of its feature, remodeling work is preceded by removal work. And, removal work inevitably creates construction wastes. Treatment of wastes that takes into consideration environmental aspects is important and for this, removal work that is based on environment friendly remodeling to ensure selective separation must be implemented. Yet, a removal work based on environment friendly remodeling has a lower level of output compared to existing methods. Because remodeling work by its nature has a post construction work which proceeds after it, securing work efficiency is important as the removal work is a critical path activity. Thus, the present study improves the work process of a removal work that is based on environment friendly remodeling so that it becomes a work process that includes work efficiency. For this, as a case study, old common housing has been selected, and a TACT process has been developed which is based on data acquired from environment friendly removal work. And, this study develops an optimal TACT process which is based on environment friendly remodeling by conducting a simulation for a 15 floor apartment.

  • In this work, the dynamic properties of a high performance concrete containing glass powder (GP) was studied. The GP is a new cementitious material obtained by recycling waste glass presenting pozzolanic activity. This eco-friendly material was incorporated in concrete mixes by replacing 20 and 30% of cement. The mechanical properties of building materials highly affect the response of the structure under dynamic actions. First, the resonant vibration frequencies were measured on concrete plate with free boundary conditions after 14, 28 and 90 curing days by using an alternative vibration monitoring technique. This technique measures the average frequencies of several excitations done at different points of the plate. This approach takes into account the heterogeneity of a material like concrete. So, the results should be more precise and reliable. For measuring the bending and torsion resonant frequencies, as well as the damping ratio. The dynamic properties of material such as dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic shear modulus were determined by modelling the plate on the finite element software ANSYS. Also, the instantaneous aroused frequency method and ultrasound method were used to determine the dynamic elastic modulus for comparison purpose, with the results obtained from vibration monitoring technique.

  • A new eco-friendly synthetic method for N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), widely used in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, is developed. Conventional synthesis method yields NHS of about 70% after its reaction with NH2OH to succinic acid. In this method, NHS can be obtained using low-cost succinic acid, but a great deal of solvents are required as an extraction method to purify NHS, while the work-up process is complicated, resulting in low yield. In addition, there is a safety risk due to the high reaction temperature for commercial production, and it is not economical due to the high cost of production from the generation of much waste because of an acid catalyst and the use of various solvents. In order to make up for this shortcoming, this study used succinic anhydride as a raw material under low temperature reaction and developed a new eco-friendly industrial synthesis method using isobutyl alcohol for a single solvent and non-catalytic reaction. The economic evaluation confirms that there is a cost reduction effect of about 20%. In the future, based on this result, studies may establish a commercial production technology through scale-up research and proceed with foreign technology transfer.

  • The function of coolant in machining is to reduce the frictional force in the contact area in between the tool and the material, and to increase the precision by cooling the work-piece and the tool, to make the machining surface uniform, and to extend the tool life. However, cutting oil is harmful to the human body because it uses chlorine-based extreme pressure additives to cause environmental pollutants. In this study, the effect of cutting temperature and surface roughness of titanium alloy for medical purpose (Ti-6Al-7Nb) in eco-friendly ADL slot shape machining was investigated using the response surface analysis method. As the design of the experiment, three levels of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut were designed and the experiment was conducted using the central composite planning method. The regression expressions of cutting temperature and surface roughness were respectively obtained as quadratic functions to obtain the minimum value and optimal cutting conditions. The values from this formula and the experimental values were compared. As a result, this study makes and establishes the basis to prevent environmental pollution caused by the use of coolant and to replace it with ADL (Aerosol Dry Lubricant) machining that uses a very small amount of vegetable oil with high pressure.

  • Recently the regulation related the environment is getting more and more strengthened. Needs for sustainable building is growing more and more interested in construction industry. However, most of the research has been conducted is focused on material production or maintaining phases. There are not enough research especially in construction phase. And it still exists a lot of environmental barrier factor which could not be easily quantified in construction fields. It makes problems that contractors make an effort only an adequate regulation and they does not take an interest in reducing efforts of environmental pollution. This research defines factor categories which have to be mainly managed and provides the integrated construction management method for sustainable building to reduce environmental pollution through analysis of environmental barrier factor in each work package and effective adjustment of construction plan.

  • With the rising interest in the environment, more attention on ecological restoration for damaged slope surface to restore its original state has been drawn. Generally, the most useful method is vegetation based spray work. This method uses green soil including sewage sludge, sawdust, paper sludge, and weathered granite soil. However, because there are neither accurate information nor test values about green soil, green soil is often lost by environmental factors such as rainfalls and strong winds. To solve the problem of green soil, it is necessary to prepare design standards about green soil, and conduct studies to deal with green soil loss in consideration of various variables including basic material property, soil quality of slope surface, and weather. This study was conducted in the mixture of green soil and eco-friendly soil stabilizer. With green soil, basic material property test and compaction test were conducted for the analysis on the basic characteristics of green soil. In the mixture with soil stabilizer at a certain ratio, we conducted shear strength test depending on the ratio in order to analyze the maximum shear strength, cohesion and the change in internal friction angles. Furthermore, in the mixture ratio of green soil and soil stabilizer, which is the same as the ratio in the shear strength test, an inclination of slope surface was made in laboratory for the analysis on erosion and germination rate. Finally, this study evaluated the most effective and economic mixing ratio of soil stabilizer to cope with neighboring environmental factors. According to the test, the shear strength of green soil increased up to 51% rely onto the mixing ratio of and a curing period, and its cohesion and internal friction angle also gradually increases. It is judged that the mixture of soil stabilizer was effective in improving shear strength and thereby increased the stability of green soil.
