  • A number of studies on eco-friendly and healthy building materials are being conducted as modern people are becoming more conscious about health and the environment they live in. Among those materials, studies on Hwangtoh are the most prevalent but due to its strength, crack coming from drying shrinkage, and susceptibility to water, the usage of Hwangtoh is incomplete and limited to be used as a common building material. Cement concrete, considered as one of the most widely used building materials, is extensively used in construction because it is economical, easily accessible and moldable and has proper compressive strength. Due to carbon dioxide created in the process of making cement concrete, it is recognized as pollution. Accordingly, there are a lot of studies on reduction of carbon dioxide in cement concrete industry. There are increasing numbers of researches as well as developments on Hwangtoh or traditional construction materials used in South Korea to reduce the environmental problems. Therefore, this study suggests the basic features of the construction material that can replace cement concrete in the future with the non-sindtered cement mixed with non-sintering hwangtoh which is made with the furnace slag and multiple stimulants.

  • Red mud is a waste generated by the aluminium industry, and its disposal is a major problem for this industry. Red mud has a reddish-brown color and superfine particle characteristics. So, it can be a promising pigment admixture for concrete industry. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the potential use of red mud in color concrete. The micro structures of red mud and iron oxide pigment such as porosity, pore size distribution, diameter of particle were analyzed with the aid of SEM, X-ray diffraction(XRD), and the infrared absorbance. Tests on physical properties of color concrete, such as strength, slump, early shrinkage crack patterns, and color characteristics were carried out and the results were reported in this paper.

  • Despite of environmental problems(safety hazards), mechanical recycling of FRP boats, which involves shredding and grinding of the scrap FRP in a new product. is one of the simpler and more technically proven methods than incineration or reclamation ones. Because FRP is made up of reinforced fiber glass, it is very difficult to break into pieces. It also occurs secondary problem such as air pollution and unacceptable shredding noise level. The another urgent problem which is a serious barrier to FRP recycling is very limited reusable applications. This study is to propose a new method which is efficient and environment friendly waste FRP regenerating system. And it also have shown the polymer cement and fiber-reinforced concrete applications with the waste FRP.

  • Recycling of coal combustion by-product(Ash) are becoming more improtant in the utilization business as a result of the increased use of NOx reduction technologies at coal-fired power plants. Current disposal methods of these by-products create not only a loss of profit for the power industry, but also environmental concerns that breed negative public opinion. This research made Precast block for environment-friendly secondary product and compare strength special quality of this block with existent common use brick and analyze application possibility in situ with a reserve experiment that measure strength property and manufacture method to handle coal ash produced in Bo-ryung thermoelectric power plant.

  • Alkali-activated binder (AAB) is increasingly being considered as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to portland cement (PC). The present study evaluates 30 different AAB mixtures containing fly ash and/or slag activated by sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate by correlating their properties from micro to specimen level using regression. A model is developed to predict compressive strength of AAB as a function of volume fractions of microstructural phases (physicochemical properties) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (elastic properties and density). The predicted models are ranked and then compared with the experimental data. The correlations were found to be quite reasonable (R2 = 0.89) for all the mixtures tested and can be used to estimate the compressive strengths for similar AAB mixtures.

  • This study examined the long-term durability of PC boxes, which was manufactured by low-carbon eco-friendly concrete using an alternative binder to cement and alternative fine aggregate to sand and microwave heat curing system to reduce the construction cost of a near-surface transit system. Based on the test results, the initial compressive strength of microwave heat cured concrete was higher than that of the steam cured concrete, but those were similar in the long-term age. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two curing conditions in the chemical resistance and the freeze-thawing resistance, and the chloride ion penetration level of the concrete cured by two methods was very low. Therefore, low-carbon eco-friendly concrete and microwave heat curing technology are expected to contribute to the economic construction of a near-surface transit system, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impact.

  • Recently, much attention has focused on the study of eco-friendly concrete using recycled by-products for protecting marine ecosystem and durability of concrete exposed to marine condition. This study evaluated the durabilities of 4 different type of concrete mixtures(Control, Marine, Porous, New slag) with the seawater resistance by marine environment exposure experiment and freeze-thaw resistance, resistance to chloride ion penetration considering severe deterioration environment. In this study, we conducted seawater resistance using compressive strength according to the age(7/28/56 days) of specimen and curing conditions(standard(fresh water), tidal, immersion, artificial seawater). The results show that compressive strength of concrete exposed to marine environment exposure condition was lower than those of the standard curing condition. Also, compressive strength of New slag using eco-friendly materials for protecting marine ecosystem was lower than those of other concretes, there is need to improve the performance of New slag. The results for freeze-thaw resistance showed that all mixtures have excellent, but the Porous and New slag were lower than others. Also, the more improved resistance to chloride ion penetration than those of the Marine was measured in the New slag regardless of curing condition.

  • Recently, interest in eco-friendly structure has been increased and many researches about hwang-toh are being actively processed. However, most researches are about material properties of hwang-toh, and researches about structural performance are insufficient. Moreover, the usability of activated hwang-toh is being identified in some ways, but its use rate is low in economic aspect in reality. Non-activated hwang-toh is expected to be advantageous in respect of economy but its material and structural performance have not been identified. Therefore, the effect of activated hwang-toh and non-activated hwang-toh on flexural capacity of hwang-toh concrete beam is analyzed in this research.
