남극 남쉐틀랜드 군도 주변 해저면 음향신호를 이용한 상업용 어군탐지기 보정 연구 (A study on calibration for commercial split beam echosounder using the bottom backscattering strength from a fishing vessel near the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica)

  • Commercial split beam echosounder (ES70) installed on a krill fishing vessel was calibrated in order to utilize it in estimating biomass of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). The method of calibration was to analyze the difference between the bottom backscattering strength of the commercial split beam echosounder (i.e. ES70) and the scientific echosounder (i.e. EK60) at one of transects near South Shetland Islands designated by CCAMLR. 38 kHz and 120 kHz were used for the calibration, and krill swarm signal levels obtained from multi frequencies, was examined to verify the calibration result. The analysis result indicated possibility of calibration by bottom backscattering strength, since the proportion of krill swarm signals within 2 dB < $S_{V\;120\;kHz-38\;kHz}$ < 12 dB (i.e. a common $S_{V\;120\;kHz-38\;kHz}$ range of 38 kHz and 120 kHz to be an indicator of Antarctic krill) over the total acoustic signals were 26.95% and 92.04%, respectively before and after the calibration.

  • Accurate measurement of seafloor topography plays a crucial role in developing marine industries such as maritime safety, resource exploration, environmental protection, and coastal management. The seafloor topography is constructed using side scan sonar (SSS) and single beam echosounder (SBES) or multibeam echosounder (MBES), which transmit and receive ultrasound waves through a device attached to a marine survey vessel. However, the use of a sonar system is affected by noise pollution areas, and the single beam has a limited scope of application. At the same time, the multibeam is mainly applicable for depth observation. For these reasons, it is difficult to determine the boundaries and areas of seafloor topography. Therefore, this study proposes a method to improve the backscatter data of multibeam echosounder, which has a relationship with the seafloor quality, by using digital image processing to classify the shape of the underwater surface.

Overview of the Applications of Hydroacoustic Methods in South Korea and Fish Abundance Estimation Methods

  • I provide an overview of the application of hydroacoustic methods in South Korea to understand the current research status in relation to fisheries acoustics and to determine which areas require further study. One main purpose for using a scientific echosounder, a representative tool using the hydroacoustic method, is to evaluate the abundance of fisheries resources. Thus, two representative methods for abundance estimation are described. The history of fisheries acoustics worldwide is also summarized.

디지털 음향측심기를 이용한 광양만 잘피(Zostera marina L.)의 피도와 생물량 추정 (Using a Digital Echosounder to Estimate Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) Cover and Biomass in Kwangyang Bay)

  • Eelgrass beds are very productive and provide nursery functions for a variety of fish and shellfish species. Management for the conservation of eelgrass beds along the Korean coasts is critical, and requires comprehensive strategies such as vegetation mapping. We suggest a mapping method to spatial distribution and quantify of eelgrass beds using a digital echosounder. Echosounding data were collected from the northeast part of Kwangyang Bay, on the south of Korea, in March, 2007. A transducer was attached to a boat equipped with a DGPS. The boat completed a transect survey scanning whole eelgrass beds of 11.7 km2 with a speed of 1.5-2 m s-1 (3-4 knot). The acoustic reflectivity of eelgrass allowed for detection and explicit measurements of canopy cover and height. The results showed that eelgrass bed was distributed in depth from 1.19 to 3.6 m (below MSL) and total dry weight biomass of 4.1 ton with a vegetation area of 4.05 km2. This technique was found to be an effective way to undertake the patch size and biomass of eelgrass over large areas as nondestructive sampling.

음향 측심기 수심인식률 향상 기법 연구 (A Study on Water Depth Measurement Rate Improvement using Echosounder)

  • 현재 해양 측량 및 선박항해 목적으로 음향측심기가 사용되어지고 있다. 하지만 신뢰성 있는 수심인식이 주 목적인 음향측심기가 낮은 수심 또는 험한 해저 지형에서 수심 인식률이 현저히 떨어지는 문제점이 있다. 이를 해결하기 위해 트랜듀서의 음파특성 파악 및 최적 알고리즘을 연구를 하였다. 알고리즘 연산처리를 하기 위해 최신 DSP프로세서(TMS320F2812)를 적용하여 고속으로 데이터처리를 하는 하드웨어 설계를 하였다. 마지막으로 기존방식과 최적 알고리즘을 적용한 방식을 비교하여 데이터 신뢰성을 비교하였다.

A preliminary study on seabed classification using a scientific echosounder

  • Acoustics are increasingly regarded as a remote-sensing tool that provides the basis for classifying and mapping ocean resources including seabed classification. It has long been understood that details about the character of the seabed (roughness, sediment type, grain-size distribution, porosity, and material density) are embedded in the acoustical echoes from the seabed. This study developed a sophisticated yet easy-to-use technique to discriminate seabed characteristics using a split beam echosounder. Acoustic survey was conducted in Tongyeong waters, South Korea in June 2018, and the verification of acoustic seabed classification was made by the Van Veen grab sampler. The acoustic scattering signals extracted the seabed hardness and roughness components as well as various seabed features. The seabed features were selected using the principal component analysis, and the seabed classification was performed by the K-means clustering. As a result, three seabed types such as sand, mud, and shell were discriminated. This preliminary study presented feasible application of a sounder to classify the seabed substrates. It can be further developed for characterizing marine habitats on a variety of spatial scales and studying the ecological characteristic of fishes near the habitats.

과학어군탐지기를 이용한 삼척 바다목장 해역의 어류 자원량 추정 (Biomass estimation of fish in Samcheok marine ranching area (MRA) of Korea using the scientific echosounder)

  • In this study, we aimed to determine the seasonal distribution and biomass of fish in Samcheok marine ranching area (MRA) of Republic of Korea using the scientific echosounder. Fish trap and gillnets were used to identify fish species in the survey area, and dB-difference method was used to estimation the spatio-temporal distribution and density of fish. The results showed that the dominant species in Samcheok marine ranching area were Chelidonichthys spinosus, Sebastes inermis, Hexagrammos otakii and Tribolodon hakonensis. The spatio-temporal distribution of fish showed that fish had a relatively higher distribution at night than during the day. In addition, the density of fish by season was highest at night in July at 34.22 g/m2 and lowest in April at 0.42 g/m2.

Echosounder와 GNSS 기반 해저지형측량시스템의 구축 (Construction of Sea-Floor Topographic Survey System Based on Echosounder and GNSS)

  • 본 연구에서는 소규모 해역을 대상으로 한 해양수심측량을 위해 단빔 음향측심기와 GNSS를 조합하여 해상에서 수평위치와 수심을 동시에 연속적으로 관측하여 해저지형정보를 추출하는 시스템을 구축하고 실측에 적용함으로써 수심측량 및 해저지형데이터 획득의 효용성을 검토하고자 하였다. 개발한 외업용 프로그램 DS-NAV와 내업용 프로그램 DS-CAD를 이용하고 대상 해역의 실측 당시 조위데이터를 적용함으로써 기준면(약최저저조면)을 기준으로 한 수심측량 성과를 도출할 수 있었으며, 또한 자동 구축된 데이터베이스로부터 해저지형을 3D 모델링하고 단면도 등을 추출할 수 있었다. 본 연구결과는 소규모 해역에서 해저지형정보를 추출하거나 해상 준설시공현장 등에 경제적으로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 DGPS와 음향측심기를 장착한 소형의 로봇선을 이용하여 저수지의 수심정보를 획득하고 이를 이용하여 정확도를 분석하는데 있다. 즉 로봇선의 속도를 변화시키고 이에 따른 속도별 수심측정의 정확도를 분석하였다. 현장실험 결과, 로봇선의 속도가 느릴수록 수심측정의 오차가 적었으며, 로봇선의 속도가 5km/hr까지는 정규분포의 신뢰구간인 95% 이내에 포함되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

변산.고사포 해수욕장 하부 조간대의 지형변동연구 (Morphological Change of Lower Tidal Flat in Byunsan.Gosapo Beach)

  • This study was carried out to survey for morphological change of lower tidal flat near Byunsan-Gosapo beach using single-beam echosounder and sound velocity profiler. Since October 2009 in the center of the region, the erosion occurred about 10~50cm, while either side of the study area is little change. Erosion occurred at the beach, each beach area in the southwest area rather than further accumulation occurred sandbank formed. Observed in the study area near the center of the erosion is the result of ongoing changes that were temporarily due to seasonal changes is not clear. However, the northwestward waves were expected to be a major source of erosion. Because of this, continue to observe the terrain and the local ocean circulation studies will be required.
