  • Electron beam (EB) irradiation was tested to determine the dose required to eradicate plant pathogens, such as Botrytis cinerea and Agrobacterium rhizogenes, from the infected seeds without affecting the germination rate of the irradiated vegetable seeds, including crown daisy, cucumber, hot pepper, green onion, leaf lettuce, and radish seeds. EB irradiation of 1.5 kGy and 2 kGy was sufficient to kill 100% of hairy root disease bacteria and gray mold conidia, respectively. EB irradiation showed no effect or minimal effect on the germination rate of the crown daisy, cucumber, green onion, and radish seeds. However, the germination rate of the hot pepper and leaf lettuce seeds was significantly reduced by using 2 kGy of EB irradiation. Difference in susceptibility to EB irradiation appears not to be related to the weight of each seed, but to the intrinsic characteristic of each plant. Conclusively, EB irradiation might be a useful way to decontaminate crown daisy, cucumber, green onion, and radish seeds.

  • In this paper, a synchronous reverse link DS-CDMA system with cdma2000 standard is simulated to analyze performance of system and to find the optimum power ratio between pilot channel and traffic channel. In the cdma2000 the pilot channel is used to estimate fading channel, in contract to IS-95 and it compensates phase variation of received signal due to channel environment. When the length of channel estimation is 31pcg symbols, we can find the optimum power ratio of pilot channel to traffic channel. And also we find Eb/No satisfying target FER when the power control is applied and analyze performance of system with multiuser transmission.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the combined effect of electron beam irradiation (EB) and onion peel extracts and selected flavorings on microbiological and sensory quality of pork jerky. Total aerobic bacteria were detected in the range of $3.87{\pm}0.30{\sim}4.60{\pm}0.12$ log CFU/g in all samples. Addition of both onion peel extract and flavoring showed the decrease of total aerobic bacterial count in pork jerky. No viable cells were observed after EB at 4 kGy. Sensory evaluation indicated that the EB-treated pork jerky with 0.5% barbecue flavoring did not show any difference in overall acceptability compared with the control. Therefore, combined use of EB with onion peel extracts and barbecue flavoring may enhance the safety of pork jerky with proper sensory quality.

  • Performance analysis is very important to transmit the high quality information and to construct the optimal system for the minimze the noise from the channel of spread spectrum system. In this paper the error rate performance is analyzed with computer simulation in noncoherent frequency hopping M-qry frequency shift keying(FH/MFSk) systems with regard to thermal noise under the partial band jamming environments. AS a result, in case the thermal noise is disregarded, bit error probability of system in jamming fraction ρ and Eb/Nj(bit energy to jamming power density) is reduced with the increase of K and in worst case 32FSK system is better than 2FSK system by 3.23dB with the variatio of Eb/Nj. In case thermal noise is considered, bit error probability of system by 3.23dB with the variation of Eb/Nj. In case thermal noise is considered, bit error probability of system are reduced with the increase of K and Eb/No(bit energy to thermal noise density). Bit error probability in connection with worst case ρ is not largely influenced form over the 14dB to K=1 and 8dB to K=5 accordingly thermal noise disregarding. These results may be useful for avoiding the common vulnerabilities when the spread spectrum system is designed.

  • The effect of internal donor(ID) in the heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalyst on the ethylene-1-butene copolymerization and the molecular structure of the resulting copolymer was investigated. $SiO_2$-supported $TiCl_4$ catalysts having ID/Ti molar ratio of 0.5 were prepared with ethyaluminium dichloride, magnesium alkyl, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and $TiCl_4$. Three different IDs were employed such as ethylbenzoate(EB), diisobuylphthalate(DIBP) and dioctylphthalate(DOP). ID-added catalyst showed a larger fraction of Ti(+3) compared to that of no ID-added catalyst. The EB-added catalyst showed the highest activity in copolymerization. Xylene soluble value decreased by more than 50 % with ID-added catalysts compared to that of no ID-added catalyst. Crystaf analysis showed the chemical compositional distribution of PE copolymer was improved in the case of DIBP-added catalyst significantly. It could be explained that the presence of ID could make more even active sites and block the non-stereospecific active sites.

  • This study was conducted to establish optimized ${\beta}-glucan$ extraction method through enzymatic hydrolysis from Phellinus baumii and investigate ${\beta}-glucan$ contents and physicochemical properties. The optimal condition was obtained with the enzyme concentration of 0.66% (v/v), reaction time of 6.08 h ($R^2=0.9245$) and the ${\beta}-glucan$ contents from the Phellinus baumii extracts under the optimized condition was 1.9594 g/100 g. ${\beta}-Glucan$ yield (0.76-16.40%) of enzyme beta-glucan extract (EBE) was three fold higher than that of non-enzyme beta-glucan extract (NEBE). ${\beta}-Glucan$ purity (11.15-59.05%) of non-enzyme beta-glucan (NEB) and that of enzyme beta-glucan (EB) were higher than that of NEBE and that of EBE. ${\beta}-Glucan$ purity of EB (59.05%) and ${\beta}-glucan$ contents of EB (3.38 g/100 g) showed higher than those of others. Total sugar contents (0.61-1.17 mg/mL) showed that NEB and EB were higher than that of NEBE and EBE, EB had the highest total sugar content as 1.17 mg/mL, respectively. Protein contents (0.44-11.73 mg/mL) of NEBE and that of EBE were higher than that of NEB, that of EB. In FT-IR spectrum, the band at $890cm^{-1}$ of microcapsule was attributed to a ${\beta}-1,3-glucan$. The toxicities of ${\beta}-glucan$ from Phellinus baumii in both melanoma cell lines was determined using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoli um bromide assay and ${\beta}-glucan$ from Phellinus baumii has no toxicity until $30{\mu}g/mL$. The effects of ${\beta}-glucan$ from Phellinus baumii on inhibition of cancer cell proliferation were detected by using a wound healing assay. The effect of NEB and EB were higher than NEBE and EBE, especially $30{\mu}g/mL$ of EB had the highest in both melanoma cell lines.

  • Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a genetic disorder, characterized by blisters on skin and mucosal surfaces even upon light mechanical damage. EB is caused by genetic mutations in at least seven proteins on the basement membrane zone, which is the boundary between the epidermis and the dermis. There are many types of EB differing in clinical and genetic aspects, and the prognosis varies depending on the EB type. There are largely three types of EB, categorized by the electron-microscopic location of the blisters. The blisters form within the epidermis in epidermolysis bullosa simplex, in the lamina lucida in junctional epidermolysis bullosa, and just beneath the basal lamina in dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. To date, there is no medication or treatment that cures EB or completely prevents the blisters, so generally symptomatic treatment is performed. EB patients must always be cautious, for blisters can form at the slightest injuries, and the patients must be dealt with gently. Injuries and infections have to be prevented and treated, and deficient nutrients must be supplied during dental treatment period. Some patients may experience pain when swallowing food or dental treatment due to blisters and resulting scars in the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus. Recently, two pediatric patients were diagnosed with EB at Pusan National University Hospital and visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry for oral care and dental treatment. The treatment results are reported here.

  • Substituted imidazolidin-2-ones deduced as potential inhibitors of IleRS by docking simulations were synthesized from an aziridine-2-carboxaldehyde. Reductive amination of an aziridine-2-carboxaldehyde with dipeptides for the substituents at N1 and followed by aziridine-ring expansion with triphosgene afforded 4-chloromethylimidazolidin-2-ones whose chloride were further manipulated towards phenylurea, pyrimidin-2-yl-urea or benzenesulfonamide at C4.

  • Direct communication between neighboring cells via gap junction in tissue is important for maintenance and regulation of its physiological functions. Each epididymal region has different composition of cell types. It is well recognized that the epididymis is a steroid hormone-responsive tissue. The present study was designed to determine the effect of estradiol benzoate (EB) or flutamide exposured at the early postnatal age on the expression of connexin (Cx) isoforms in the caudal epididymis. The EB or flutamide was subcutaneously administrated to male Spragure Dawley rat at 7 days of age, and expressional changes of Cx isoforms in the adult corpus epididymis were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. The treatment of low-dose EB resulted in decreases of Cx30.3, Cx31.1, Cx37, and Cx45 expression but caused an increase of Cx32 expression. Exposure to high-dose EB led into expressional increases of Cx31, Cx31.1, Cx32, Cx40, and Cx43, even though a decrease of Cx37 expression was found with a high-dose EB treatment. A low-dose flutamide induced increases of Cx31, Cx31.1, Cx32, and Cx43 expression but a decrease of Cx37 expression. Expression of most Cx genes were significantly increased by a high-dose flutamide, while no expressional change of Cx26 and Cx40 was detected by a high-dose flutamide. These results indicate that expression of Cx isoforms in the caudal epididymis is altered by exposure to steroidal compounds at the prepubertal age. It is suggested that a contact with environmental exogenous materials during the early postnatal period would lead to alteration of epididymal functions at the adult.
