  • Although most species in genus Zostera inhabit shallow coastal areas and bays with weak wave energy, the Asian eelgrass, Zostera asiatica is distributed in deep water depth (8-15 m) unlike other seagrasses on the eastern coast of Korea. To examine factors limiting distribution Z. asiatica in relatively deep coastal areas, a transplantation experiment was conducted on October 2011, in which Z. asiatica shoots were transplanted from the reference site (donor meadow, ~9 m) to the shallow transplant site (~3 m). We compared shoot density, morphology, and productivity of Z. asiatica as well as environmental factors (underwater irradiance, water temperature, and nutrients) between the reference and transplant sites from October 2011 to September 2012. Shoot density and shoot height of transplants dramatically decreased within a few months after transplantation, but were similar with Z. asiatica in the reference site during spring. Shoot productivity were significantly higher in the transplant site than in reference site because of high light availability and nutrient concentrations. Transplants showed photoacclimatory responses such as higher rETRmax and Ek and lower photosynthetic efficiency in the transplant site than those in the reference site. Most of Z. asiatica transplant in the shallow transplant site disappeared in summer, which may be due to the high wave energy and physical damages induced by typhoons (TEMBIN and SANBA) in August and September 2012. According to the results of this study, Z. asiatica could not survive in shallow areas despite of more favorable light and nutrient conditions. Thus, Z. asiatica may restrictively occur in deep areas to avoid the intense physical stresses in the shallow area on the east coast of Korea.

  • The multi-frequency characteristics of anchovy schools were investigated using six acoustic lines collected at 38 and 120 kHz while a primary trawl survey was conducted from 14 April and 18 April of 2014 in off the coast of Tongyeong and Geo-je. Here, the frequency characteristics mean ${\Delta}MVBS$ that is the difference of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength at two frequencies. To use the characteristics effectively, the optimal cell size ($10{\times}2m$) was determined by examining several different cell sizes in consideration with the shapes of fish schools and the ${\Delta}MVBS$ pattern. By examining 6 histograms of ${\Delta}MVBS$, afternoon groups were occupied more in the ${\Delta}MVBS$ range of -6~-4 dB than that of -4~-2 dB, comparing to morning groups. The ${\Delta}MVBS$ range of the morning groups was between -16.9 dB and 11.6 dB, and that of the afternoon groups -16.7 dB and 13.0 dB. The average and standard deviation were $-3.9{\pm}3.6$ dB in the morning and $-4.1{\pm}3.4$ dB in the afternoon, suggesting that morning groups were 2 dB higher than afternoon groups. The ${\Delta}MVBS$ range of all anchovy schools regardless of morning and afternoon was between -16.9 dB and 13.0 dB, their average ${\Delta}MVBS$ was $-4.1{\pm}3.5$ dB. The characteristics can support to identify anchovy species in the waters where multiple fish species are distributed. It is hoped that this study presents the availability and benefit of acoustic data from a primary trawl survey.

  • Myogenesis is the formation process of multinucleated myofiber with a contractile capacity from muscle satellite cell (MSCs) during life. This process is tightly controlled by several transcription factors such as Pax3 and Pax7 (paired box protein 3 and 7), MEF2C (myocyte enhancer factor 2) and MRFs (myogenic regulatory factors) etc. On the contrary, myostatin (MSTN) is a transforming growth factor-${\beta}$ superfamily, which functions as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle development and growth. Carnosic acid (CA) is a major phenolic component in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and have been reported various biological activities such as anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial and therapeutic agents for amnesia, dementia, alzheimer's disease. This study was confirmed to effects of CA on muscle cell line and muscle tissue alteration of zebrafish by intramuscular injection or feeding methods. $10{\mu}M$ CA showed a non-cytotoxic on myoblast and a complete inhibition effect against myostatin activity on luciferase assay. In intramuscular injection experiment, the total protein and triglyceride amount of $10{\mu}M/kg$ of CA injected group increased by 11% and decreased by 13% compared to these of the no injected group. In histology analysis of muscle tissues by hematoxylin/eosin staining, the number of muscle fiber of $10{\mu}M/kg$ of CA injected group decreased by 29% and fiber area increased 40% compared to these of no injected group. In feeding experiment, the total protein and triglyceride amount no significance difference compared to these of the normal feeding group. In histology analysis, the number of muscle fiber of 1% CA fed group decreased by 35% and fiber area increased 56% compared to these of normal fed group. We identified that CA have an effect on hypertrophy of muscle fiber in adult zebrafish and the results of this study are considered as the basic data that can reveal the mechanisms of muscle formation via gene and protein level analysis.

  • Recently, in relation to climate change, many studies have been conducted to predict the potential habitat area and distribution range of tilapia and the suitability of habitat for each species. Most tilapia are tropical fish that cannot survive at water temperatures below 10 to 12℃, although some tilapia can survive at 6 to 8℃. This study predicted habitable areas and the possibility of spreading of habitat ranges of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus and Oreochromis aureus) known to inhabit domestic streams. Due to climate change, it was found that habitats in the Geum River, Mangyeong River, Dongjin River, Seomjin River, Taehwa River, Hyeongsan River, and the flowing in East Sea were possible by 2050. In addition, it was confirmed that tilapia could inhabit the preferred lentic ecosystem such as Tamjin Lake, Naju Lake, Juam Lake, Sangsa Lake, Jinyang Lake, Junam Reservoir, and Hoedong Reservoir. In particular, in the case of tilapia, which lives in tributaries of the Geumho River, Dalseo Stream, and the Nakdong River, its range of habitat is expected to expand to the middle and lower of the Nakdong River system. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to prepare physical and institutional management measures to prevent the spread of the local population where tilapia currently inhabits and to prevent introduction to new habitats.

  • After exposing Olive flounder and Korean rockfish to the concentration ranges of control (0 mg/L), 100 mg/L, 250 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 1,000 mg/L, to investigate the physiological properties of suspended load on fish AST/GOT, ALT/GPT, ALP and cortisol were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the AST/GOT, ALT/GPT, ALP and cortisol values were higher in the suspended load concentration section than in the control group. After artificial infection with S. parauberis for Olive flounder and V. harveyi for Korean rockfish exposed to suspended load, the survival rate was higher in the control group than in the suspended load concentration section. These results are related to the previously study results of suspended load that adversely affect fish, suggesting that suspended load affects the health of fish.

  • Ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi, mainly inhabiting the subtidal rocky bottom as a sessile form, has been favored a tasty sea food in abundance along the east and south coast of Korea. The study was attempted to establish the basic data for evaluating the processing suitability of ascidian. The height, width, total weight, integument weight and edible portion of the ascidian were $9.2{\sim}12.2cm,\;4.7{\sim}6.1cm,\;100.2{\sim}163.0g,\;18.2{\sim}41.4g$ and $20.2{\sim}62.0g$, respectively. The moisture content, which showed a minimum value as low as $80.0\%$ in October. On the contrary, glycogen content of edible portion revealed the maximum value, $3.1{\sim}4.1\%$ from July to August. The protein and fat showed a similar change to glycogen. The level of ash was rather constant throughout the period, being $2.2{\sim}3.8\%$. Among the 7 kinds of mineral analyzed in all the samples of edible portion and integument, Na, K, Mg and Ca contents were predominent in order being more than $96.14{\sim}99.10\%$, of the total ash. In the amino acid composition of ascidian, the predominent ones were asparagine, glutamic acid, taurine, aspartic acid, proline, and lysine in order and the sum of these amino acids occupied $85.0\%$ of the total free amino acid while methionine and arginine were poor.

  • Recently, special attention has been given to acid rain and its problem to environment such as acid precipitation and air pollution in East Asia. In the present study, rainwater samples were collected from Apr to Nov in 2012. The samples were chemically characterized for the assessment of emission sources. Suwon and Yeoju regions, typical agricultural areas in South Korea, were chosen for study sites. Ion composition and cation-affected neutralization were determined to evaluate the contribution of cations to the acidity of rainwater. Ion and electrical conductivity between the measured and the estimated showed high correlation. The cations observed in Suwon and Yeoju were $Na^+$ > $NH_4{^+}$ > $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $H^+$ and $Na^+$ > $K^+$ > $NH_4{^+}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}=H^+$, respectively. The anions of all sites were $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$. While the amounts of sulfate, one of the major dissolved components of rainwater, were 77.6 and 75.6 ueq $L^{-1}$ in Suwon and Yeoju, the ones of NSS-$SO{_4}^{2-}$ (Non-Sea Salt sulfate) were 83 and 82% in Suwon and Yeoju, respectively. The comparison of observed pH values ($pH_{obs}$) with the theoretical pH values ($pH_{the}$) showed that the neutralization of rain water considerably went along during the study periods. The highest amounts of rainfall throughout the year in Suwon and Yeoju were 572.3 and 484.6 mm in July, and its corresponding nitrogen loadings in Suwon and Yeoju were 5.28 and 3.50 kg $ha^{-1}$, respectively. The major ion contents for crop growth with $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ were 51.7, 5.2, 11.8 and 1.8 kg $ha^{-1}$ in Suwon and 34.2, 4.0, 4.2 and 1.1 kg $ha^{-1}$ in Yeoju.

  • This study's objective is to inform people of the value and identity and to understand the cultural landscape characteristics of coastal village forest, which have not been studied in-depth in previous studies. This study was conducted by selecting 10 village forest sites in the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea and the present state of forests were investigated through bibliographical and on-the-spot survey, as well as interviews with local villagers. The following points(characteristics of traditional culture, practical characteristics, scenic characteristics) are the important factors for analyzing cultural landscape characteristics of coastal village forest verified through the study. First, The coastal village forest in the village commons is mental space for the local community affected by folk belief rather than confucian backgrounds. Second, The coastal village forest is a reasonable space contriving economic efficiency and solving the real problems facing the coastal village. Third, The coastal village forest identities should be understood the land use around village and behind mountain from the sea of wide range rather than confined to just a forest consisting of trees. This study's significance is to make the basic data and to enhance the value of the coastal village forest unnoticed. In addition, the subjects of the study should be extended to the east and west coastal village forests and subsequent research should be conducted to notification the characteristics and differences of each coastal village forest.

  • Contents of biogenic components [opal, $CaCO_3$, TOC (total organic carbon)] were measured in Core LHB-3PC sediments collected off Lutzow-Holm Bay, in order to understand glacial-interglacial cyclic variation of the high-latitude surface-water paleoproductivity, in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean. An age model was established from the correlation of ARM/IRM ratios of Core LHB-3PC with LR04 stack benthic ${\delta}^{18}O$ records, in complement with radiocarbon isotope ages and biostratigraphic Last Appearance Datum (LAD). The core-bottom age was estimated to be about 700 ka. Although the $CaCO_3$ content is very low less than 1.0% throughout the core, the opal and TOC contents show clear glacial-interglacial cyclic variation such that they are high during the interglacial periods (7.2-50.3% and 0.05-1.00%, respectively) and low during the glacial periods (5.2-25.2% and 0.01-0.68%, respectively). According to the spectral analysis, the variation of opal content is controlled mainly by eccentricity forcing and subsequently by obliquity forcing during the last 700 kyrs. The opal contents of Core LHB-3PC also represent the apparent Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT)-related climatic variation in the glacial-interglacial cycles. In particular, the orbital variation of the opal contents shows increasing amplitudes since marine isotope stage (MIS) 11, which defines one of the important paleoclimatic events during the late Quaternary, called the "Mid-Brunhes Event". Based on the variation of the opal contents in Core LHB-3PC, we suggest that the surface-water paleoproductivity in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean followed the orbital (glacial-interglacial) cycles, and was controlled mainly by the extent of sea ice distribution during the last 700 kyrs.

  • Tanakius kitaharae and Glyptocephalus stelleri, belonging to the family Pleuronectidae, were very similar in external morphology not only during adult periods, but also during larval periods. In this study, we compared larval development and growth of the two pleuronectids species in detail. Fifty-eight specimens of T. kitaharae larvae and five specimens of G. stelleri larvae were collected from the East Sea, southern Korean Strait, and the adjacent waters of Jeju Island during 2014~2016, and were identified using morphological and molecular markers. Flexion larvae of T. kitaharae (10.23~16.77 mm total length, TL) and G. stelleri (14.33 mm TL) were similar in morphometrics, but can be distinguished by the melanophores in the fin membranes (present in the former vs. absent in the latter), and the melanophores at posterior margin of shoulder girdle (absent in the former vs. present in the latter). Postflexion larvae of T. kitaharae (17.12~24.92 mm TL) and G. stelleri (27.71~32.95 mm TL) differed in the number of melanophores on the mid-lateral caudal region (two in the former vs. five in the latter), and that on the dorsal and anal fin pterygiophores (five or six in the former vs. one row in the latter). Tanakius kitaharae and G. stelleri larvae differed in size at the beginning of metamorphosis. The left eye of T. kitaharae larvae between 23.13~24.92 mm TL reached the dorsal margin of the head while that of G. stelleri larvae between 38.66~42.67 mm TL did not reached yet.
