  • To learn more about the calibration properties of reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) by the combination of gas chromatography(GC)-pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption method, a series of calibration experiments were conducted on the basis of both internal and external calibration approaches. For these experiments, gaseous standards of 4 RSCs ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, and DMDS) were prepared at two different concentration levels of both low (10, 20, 50,and 100 ppb) and high ranges (100, 200, 500, and 1000 ppb) along with $CS_2$ as an internal standard. First, the external calibration results were compared between fixed standard volume (FSV) and fixed standard concentration (FSC) method. Secondly, FSV-based calibration results were compared between external and internal calibration results. As FSV method suffers from sensitivity variations less significantly than FSC, the former is recommended to maintain the consistency in GC-TD sensitivity for RSC analysis. In addition, when the calibration data were examined in terms of RSE between external and internal calibration data, the results were not consistent enough to show improvements in internal method. Hence, diverse efforts are desirable to optimize the reproducibility in terms of GC-TD sensitivity for RSC analysis.

  • Recently, tunnelling with TBM is getting popular for the construction of cable tunnel in urban area. Mechanized tunnelling method using shield TBM has various advantages such as minimization of ground settlement and prevention of vibration induced by blasting that should be accompanied by conventional tunnelling. In Korea, earth pressure balance (EPB) type shield TBM has been mainly used. Despite the popularity of EPB shield TBM for cable tunnel construction, study on the mechanical behavior of cable tunnel driven by shield TBM is insufficient. Especially, the effect of backfill grout injection on the behavior of cable tunnel driven by shield TBM is investigated in this study. Tunnelling with shield TBM is simulated using 3D FEM. The distance of backfill grout injection from the end of shield skin varies. Sectional forces such as axial force, shear force and bending moment are monitored. Vertical displacement at the ground surface is measured. Futhermore, the relation between volume loss and the distance of backfill grout injection from the end of skin plate is derived. Based on the stability analysis with the results obtained from the numerical analysis, the most appropriate injection distance can be obtained.

  • DTM data evaluation regards accuracy and efficiency as its most important parameters, and these two elements are sensitively influenced by the sampling technique employed and its procedure. This study attempts to improve sampling techniques and evaluate the accuracy of DTM based on earth volume calculation, using aerial photography and field survey information as basic DTM data, and a regular grid and progressive sampling method for sampling process. Especially, the progressive sampling has employed different combinations of threshold and sampling criteria, that is, parameters influential on efficiency and accuracy, for the purpose of numerical tests intended to permit comparative analysis. The tests have resulted in the findings that in progressive sampling its grid density fits in well with given terrain characteristics in proportion to their variability. and that threshold and accuracy contain close mutual relations in which an increased threshold bringing more efficency but less accuracy. It follows, therefore. that a threshold, when appropriately determined, can be of very efficient use for considerably broad applications, and particularly, will play a significant role in its application to such general civil engineering as earth volume calculation.

  • High-pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments were performed on natural illite (K0.65Al2(Al0.65Si3.35)O10(OH)2) using diamond anvil cell (DAC) under two different pressure transmitting media (PTM), i.e., water and ME41 (methanol:ethanol = 4:1 by volume). When using water as PTM, occasional heating was applied up to about 250℃ while reaching pressure up to 2.7 GPa in order to promote both hydrostatic conditions and intercalation of water molecules into the layer. When using ME41, pressure was reached up to 6.9 GPa at room temperature. Under these conditions, illite did not show any expansion of interlayer distance or phase transitions. Pressure-volume data were used to derive bulk moduli (K0) of 45(3) GPa under water and 51(3) GPa under ME41 PTM. indicating no difference in compressibility within the analytical error. Linear compressibilities were then calculated to be βa = 0.0025, βb = 0.0029, βc = 0.0144 under ME41 PTM showing the c-axis is ca. six times more compressible than a- and b-axes. These elastic behaviors of illite were compared to muscovite, one of its structural analogues.

  • There is an inseparable relation between human race and engineering work. As world developed into highly industrialized society, a diversity of large structures is being built up correspondently to limited topographical circumstance. Though large structures are national establishments which provide us with convenience of life, there are some disastrous possibilities which were never predicted such as ground subsidence and degradation. It is very difficult to analyze the volume of total metamorphosis with the relative displacement measurement system which is now used and it is impossible to know whether there is structural metamorphosis within a permissible range of design or not. In this research with an object of 13-year-old earthen dam, through generating point-cloud which has 3D spatial coordinates(x, y, z) of this dam by means of 3D Laser Scanning, we can get real configuration data of slanting surface of this dam with this method of getting a number of 3D spatial coordinates(x, y, z). It gives 3D spatial model to us and we can get various information of this dam such as the distance of slanting surface of dam, dimensions and cubic volume. It can be made full use of as important source material of reinforcement and maintenance works to detect previously the bulging of the dam through this research.

  • This study was aimed at suggest a proper planning method to select a optimal forest road network in mountains forest using GIS(Geographic Information System). To examine the field applicability, the method was applied to the National Forest at Mt. Kumsan in Namhae-gun, Gyungsangnam-do. The main results from altogether six alternative road route plans were derived from these criteria obtained the alternative route plan No.2 has two layout criteria, longitudinal gradient and earth work volume, and it showed similar pattern of existing forest road network which was designed mainly ground slope and longitudinal gradient. The alternative route plan No.6 has four criteria, longitudinal gradient, earth work volume, investment effect and landscape impact. It was different for the lowest forest road density among the alternatives and the pattern of the forest road layout was radial form, which was also quite different to other alternatives. For optimal forest road network planning, GIS provide the efficient and resonable solutions for decision making to provide the support for evaluation about various alternative road networks. If detailed inventory and relevant data are provided and also clear and objective indicators for evaluations are set up, it could be applied to preliminary analysis and detail planning stage to prevent undesirable effect such the land slide and soil erosion due to inadequate planning for forest road network.

  • We estimate the eruption history and magmatic eruptive volumes of each rock units to evaluate the volcanic eruption scale and volcanic hazard of the Ulleung Island. Especially, Maljandeung Tuff represents about 19~5.6 ka B.P. from $^{14}C$ dating, and Albong Trachyandesite, about 0.005 Ma from K-Ar dating in recent age dating data. These ages reveal evidences of volcanic activities within the last 10,000 years, indicating that the Ulleung Island can classify as an active volcano with possibility of volcanic eruption near future. Accumulated DRE-corrected eruptive volume is calculated at $40.80km^3$, within only the island. The calculated volumes of each units are $3.71km^3$ in Sataegam Tuff, and $0.10km^3$ in Maljandeung Tuff but $12.39km^3$ in accounting the distal and medial part extended into southwestern Japan. Volcanic explosivity indices range 1 to 6, estimating from the volumes of each pyroclastic deposits. The colossal explosivity indices are 5 in Sataegam Tuff, and 6 in Maljandeung Tuff in accounting the distal and medial part. Therefore, it is necessary for appropriate researches regarding possibility of volcanic eruption of the island, and establishment system of the evaluation and preparation for volcanic hazard based on the researches is required.

  • An anion exchange method for separating Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd element in monazites and into enriched fractions has been developed. The complexed rare earth ions with EDTA at pH 8.4 passed through the resin column of the various size and eluted with 0.0301 M EDTA as eluent at flow rate of 1 ml/min and 2 ml/min. The result of separation is good in the high column length rather than the low on using the resin of the same amount and the volume of eluent required in eluting all the rare earths at 2 ml/min flow rate is larger than that at 1 ml/min and the result of separation obtained here is unsatisfactory.

  • Biomineralization has been explored for geochemical cycles and microbial tolerance mechanisms to metal toxicity. Here, we are introducing NanoFermentation which enables economic, environmentally friendly, requiring low input energy, and scalable manufacturing of nano-dimensioned magnetite. We are also focusing on controlling factors of crystallite size which can determine superparamagnetism and ferrimagnetism. Controlling factors are such as microbial species, temperature, incubation time, medium composition, substituted elements and their concentration, precursor type, reaction volume, precursor concentration density and their combinations. Crystallite size distribution of biomagnetite depends on the balance between nuclei generation and crystal growth. Biomineralization will elucidate elemental cycles on earth crust and microbial ecology as well as it will be applied to material sciences and devices via massive production of nanomaterials.

  • Synthetic carbon-coated olivine-like structured lithium iron phosphate ($Li^+Fe^{2+}(PO_4)^{3-}/C$) powder composites were compressed up to 35.0 GPa in the symmetrical diamond anvil cell at room temperature. Bulk modulus of $LiFePO_4/C$ was determined to be $130.1{\pm}10.3$ GPa. New peak appears at the d-spacing of 3.386 ${\AA}$ above 18 GPa, and another new one at 2.854 ${\AA}$ around 35 GPa. The crystallographic symmetry of the sample (i.e. orthorhombic) is apparently retained up to 35 GPa as no clear evidence for the phase transition into spinel structure has been observed. The pressure-induced volume change in the M1 site ($Li^+O_6$) is more significant than those in M2($Fe^{2+}O_6$) and $PO_4$ tetrahedral sites.
