  • Finite element method with linear triangular and bilinear rectangular elements is applied to solve the three-dimensional potential distribution due to a point source of current located in or on the surface of the earth containing arbitrary two-dimensional resistivity distribution. The modeling technique developed in this paper is flexible to model conductive inhomogeneity and surface topographies, and more accurate to evaluate surface potentials than the conventional techniques using finite difference method. Since it is possible to reduce nodal points with acceptable accuracy, this modeling technique is very efficient and economic in terms of execution time and core space. A few geologic structures adequate to demonstrate above features are simulated in this paper.

  • The object of grounding of electrical facility is to protect human and machine damage from the power supply interruption high voltage by use of the accident current dissipating into the ground. Generally, it is not easy to make suitable ground design for inhomogeneous subsurface geology and the variability of accident current in magnitude and duration time. To make efficient ground, ground potential rise must be controlled in the way of overall lowering and evenness. This study shows the case of optimized ground design by use of subsurface resistivity structure from electrical soundings.

  • As a basic study of characterizing fracture condition in bore hole, conventional geophysical well log data consisting of sonic, gamma-gamma and resistivity logs were compared with geological core log and acousic televiewer log in limestone geology. Discontinuities shown on the acoustic televiewer log and the core log show fairly good correlation. The conventional Geophysical log is also shown to bi effective in locating discontinities in limestone geology; sonic log shows the best result and resistivity shows the worst. Particularly, the combination method of density and sonic logs is shown to be the most effective in delineating discontinuities.

  • A Natural cavities were found at shallow depth during construction of a huge bridge in Moon-Kyung, Korea. The distribution patterns of cavities in the Moon-Kyung limestone were investigated carefully with a supplementary field job such as a structural geological survey, a geophysical survey, and a rock mechanical test in laboratory or field. A structural geological mapping produced a detail geological map on this area. It suggested that there were three faults in this area, and these faults had an influence on the mechanism of natural cavities. Among many kinds of geophysical surveys, an electrical resistivity prospecting was applied firstly on the specific area that was selected by results from the geological survey. Many evidences for cavities were disclosed from this geophysical data. Therefore, a seismic tomography was tested on the target area, which was focused by results from the electrical resistivity prospecting and was believed to have several large cavities. A distinct element numerical simulation using the UDEC was followed on the target area after completing all of field surveys. Data from field tests were directly dumped or extrapolated to numerical simulations as input data. It was verified from numerical analysis that several natural cavities underneath the foundation of the bridge should be reinforced. Based on the project result, finally, most of foundations for the bridge were re-examined and the cement grouting reinforcement was constructed on several foundations among them.

  • This paper compares numerical quadrature techniques for computing an inverse Fourier transform integral in two-dimensional resistivity modeling. The quadrature techniques using exponential and cubic spline interpolations are examined for the case of a homogeneous earth model. In both methods the integral over the interval from 0 to ${\lambda}_{min}$, where ${\lambda}_{min}$, is the minimum sampling spatial wavenumber, is calculated by approximating Fourier transformed potentials to a logarithmic function. This scheme greatly reduces the inverse Fourier transform error associated with the logarithmic discontinuity at ${\lambda}=0$. Numrical results show that, if the sampling intervals are adequate, the cubic spline interpolation method is more accurate than the exponential interpolation method.

  • Recently, waste landfills built on seashores have been increased because of the easy availability of broad area near the urban communities. To evaluate the performance of the marine clay landfill liner numerical contaminant transport analyses are performed by selecting the typical section of a waste landfill built on seashores and using hydraulic conductivity data obtained from the site. Also, the laboratory electrical resistivity test and the in-situ corrosion test are performed in order to analyze the influence of the soil and leachates composing the landfills on the construct ion materials. From the results of contaminant transport analyses, it is shown that the leachates can be migrated faster through narrow pervious channels than the wide homogeneous pervious tedium and the importance of good quality barriers to prevent the contaminant migration is recognized. In the laboratory electrical resistivity test all the earth materials except the cover soils saturated with distilled water have small resistivities, which shows a high potential of corrosivity of soils composing landfills. However, the degree of corrosion of specimens buried in the landfills was not so severe except the zinc and carbon steel specimens. This apparently conflict results present the necessity of the investigation of other major factors and the long term in-situ corrosion test.

  • 2-D and 3-D resistivity surveys were carried out at the Deok-In2 levee during the period of arid and rainy seasons to assess the waterproof effectiveness of sheet pile and routing sections and detect the location of pipings. Inverted resistivity sections clearly indicated the boundaries of sheet pile and grouting sections and the locations of pipings observed at the ground surface. It is necessary that proper survey parameters are determined considering inverted depth and resolution and contacting resistance is decreased to obtain favorable result.

  • Recently, electrical resistivity survey is used in the various fields and applied to urban area with many electrical noises. Therefor it's necessary to observe the electrical noise effect of the geological structure. The physical scale modeling was conducted for measuring the electric noise effect of the two geological models at various distances, depths and diameters of the electric noise objects. The results are as following. 1. When conductive noise object was vertical to the strike of geological structure and moved to the strike direction, the effect of conductive noise object at various separated distances to the measurement line was disappeared at a half distance measurement line length regardless of electrode arrays. 2. When conductive noise object was vertical to the strike of geological structure and moved to the strike direction, the effect of conductive noise object at various depths was disappeared at 4unit apart from the measurement line regardless of electrode arrays. 3. When conductive noise object was vertical to the strike of geological structure and moved to the strike direction, the effect of conductive noise object at various diameters was disappeared at 4unit apart from the measurement line regardless of electrode arrays.

  • In this study, we developed the 2.5D EM modeling and inversion algorithm for cross-hole source and receiver geometry. Considering the cross-hole environment, we use a VMD (vertical magnetic dipole) as a source and vertical magnetic fields as a measuring data. Developed inversion algorithm is tested for the isolated block model which has a conductive and a resistivity anomaly respectively. For the conductive anomaly, its size and resistivity are inverted well on the inversion results, while for the resistive anomaly, the location of anomalous block is shown on the inverted section, but its values are far from the exact value. Furthermore, artificial conductive anomalies are shown around the resistive anomalous zone. If we consider the inversion artifact shown in the test inversion of restive block, it is almost impossible to image the resistive zone. However, the main target of EM tomography in the engineering problem is conductive target such as fault zone, and contaminated zone etc., EM tomography algorithm can be used for detecting the anomalous zone.

  • We measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro electric signal generated by rock and mortar fracture using PXI A/D Converter. The rock type used for measurement was used granite, limestone and sandstone, and mortar specimen. we made measuring equipment of physical properties to confirm basic information of physical properties, measured physical properties of rock engineering, electric resistivity and seismic velocity. Potential waveform system was built using PXI A/D Converter and measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro-electric signal generated using this during uniaxial compressive test by the specimen finished such test of physical properties. Using the saturated rock and mortar specimen, micro electric signal increased, and It didn't increase a signal in dried rock and mortar specimen according as load and strain rate increases. But signal also increased in saturated or dried specimen in case of sandstone. It was possible to check the close correlation relationship the signal and fracture behavior by a compressive load as the signal of fracture position was increased bigger than the other position. It was also possible to check the correlation relationship between physical properties and micro geo-electric signal.
