  • Determining lateral earth pressure coefficient (EPC) K is a classic problem in geotechnical engineering. It is a key parameter for estimating the stresses in backfilled openings. For backfilled openings with rigid and immobile walls, some suggested using the Jaky's at-rest earth pressure coefficient K0 while other suggested taking the Rankine's active earth pressure coefficient Ka. A single value was proposed for the entire backfilled opening. To better understand the distributions of stresses and K in a backfilled opening, a series of laboratory tests have been conducted. The horizontal and vertical normal stresses at the center and near the wall of the opening were measured. The values of K at the center and near the wall were then calculated with the measured horizontal and vertical normal stresses. The results show that the values of K are close to Ka at the center and close to K0 near the wall. Furthermore, the experimental results show that the horizontal stress is almost the same at the center and near the wall, indicating a uniform distribution from the center to the wall. It can be estimated by analytical solutions using either Ka or K0. The vertical stress is higher near the center than near the wall. Its analytical estimation can only be done by using Ka at the center and K0 near the wall. Finally, the test results were used to calibrate a numerical model of FLAC2D, which was then used to analyze the influence of column size on the stresses and K in the backfilled opening.

  • In this study, we present results of precise orbital geodetic parameter estimation using satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations for the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) associate analysis center (AAC). Using normal point observations of LAGEOS-1, LAGEOS-2, ETALON-1, and ETALON-2 in SLR consolidated laser ranging data format, the NASA/GSFC GEODYN II and SOLVE software programs were utilized for precise orbit determination (POD) and finding solutions of a terrestrial reference frame (TRF) and Earth orientation parameters (EOPs). For POD, a weekly-based orbit determination strategy was employed to process SLR observations taken from 20 weeks in 2013. For solutions of TRF and EOPs, loosely constrained scheme was used to integrate POD results of four geodetic SLR satellites. The coordinates of 11 ILRS core sites were determined and daily polar motion and polar motion rates were estimated. The root mean square (RMS) value of post-fit residuals was used for orbit quality assessment, and both the stability of TRF and the precision of EOPs by external comparison were analyzed for verification of our solutions. Results of post-fit residuals show that the RMS of the orbits of LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2 are 1.20 and 1.12 cm, and those of ETALON-1 and ETALON-2 are 1.02 and 1.11 cm, respectively. The stability analysis of TRF shows that the mean value of 3D stability of the coordinates of 11 ILRS core sites is 7.0 mm. An external comparison, with respect to International Earth rotation and Reference systems Service (IERS) 08 C04 results, shows that standard deviations of polar motion $X_P$ and $Y_P$ are 0.754 milliarcseconds (mas) and 0.576 mas, respectively. Our results of precise orbital and geodetic parameter estimation are reasonable and help advance research at ILRS AAC.

  • We discuss a model4-dimensional Friedmann cosmology which may have evolved from a model of 4+D dimensions which admits spontaneous compactification of D dimensions (or N-dimensional variants of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory). The BD parameter appearing in dimensional reduction is negative $-1<\omega<0$ (for the N-dimensional variants of the BD theory, $-1.5{\leq}{\omega})$. We find that if there had been inflationary transtion to the standard big-bang model, the Universe can undergoe a polar-type expansion during when the gravitational coupling becomes negative. The unique feature is that for the negative w, the density parameter of the post-inflationary Universe falls in a range 0<0<1 even if the Universe is geometrically flat (k = 0).

  • We examine the effect of environment on star formation activity of a sample of a galaxy group catalogue constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS DR8) given in Tempel et al.(2012). As an environmental parameter, we use the richness of the galaxy group. According to this parameter, we select 6846 galaxies in dense environment and 297335 galaxies in low environment. By comparing the two samples, we identify the different relationship between star formation rate and stellar mass. In order to compare galaxies in different environment, we fixed other parameters(color, apparent magnitude), which can affect star formation efficiency except for stellar mass. Also, based on HI mass from the ALFALFA survey, we study the environmental dependence of Kennicutt-Schmidt law which show the correlation between star formation rate and gas content.

  • Flight parameters of a light aircraft in normal category named ChangGong-91 we identified from flight tests. Modified Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MMLE) is used to produce aerodynamic coefficients, stability and control derivatives. A Flight Training Device (FTD) has been developed based on the identified flight parameters. Flat earth, rigid body, and standard atmosphere are assumed in the FTD model. Euler angles are adapted for rotational state variables to reduce computational load. Variations in flight Mach number and Reynolds number are assumed to be negligible. Body, stability and inertial axes allow 6 second-order linear differential equations for translational and rotational motions. The equations of motion are integrated with respect to time, resulting in good agreements with flight tests.

  • Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is the temperature close to the ocean's surface and affects the Earth's atmosphere as an important parameter for the climate circulation and change. The SST from satellite still has biases from the error in specifying retrieval coefficients from either forward modeling or instrumental biases. So in this paper, we performed sensitivity analysis using input parameter of the SST to notice that the SST is most affected among the input parameter. We used Infrared (IR) data from the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS)/Meteorological Imager (MI) from April 2011 to March 2012. We also used the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) correction to quality of the IR data from COMS. SST was calculated by substituting the input parameters; IR data with or without the GSICS correction. The results of this sensitivity analysis, the SST was sensitive from -0.0403 to 0.2743 K when the IR data were changed by the GSICS corrections.

  • The process-based XBeach model has numerous empirical parameters because of insufficient understanding of hydrodynamics and sediment transport on the nearshore; hence, it is necessary to calibrate parameters to apply to various study areas and wave conditions. Therefore, the calibration process of parameters is essential for the improvement of model performance. Generally, the trial-and-error method is widely used; however, this method is passive and limited to various and comprehensive parameter ranges. In this study, the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method was used to estimate the optimal range of three parameters (gamma, facua, and gamma2) using morphological field data collected in Maengbang beach during the four typhoons that struck from September to October 2019. The model performance and optimal range of empirical parameters were evaluated using Brier Skill Score (BSS) along with the baseline profiles, sensitivity, and likelihood density analysis of BSS in the GLUE tools. Accordingly, the optimal parameter combinations were derived when facua was less than 0.15 and simulated well the shifting shape, from crescentic sand bar to alongshore uniform sand bars in the surf zone of Maengbang beach after storm impact. However, the erosion and accretion patterns nearby in the surf zone and shoreline remain challenges in the XBeach model.

  • The problem of the collapse of a self gravitating disk is here considered. We show self-similar solutions for the above problem under a modified viscous parameter. Surface density depends on r$^m$ in the inner region, where m is -1.6. Therefore growing central mass goes on without mass inflow to the system.

  • Refraction tomography requires an algorithm for efficiently computing the traveltimes and their $Fr\'{e}chet$ derivatives. We have attempted to solve the damped wave field using the frequency domain finite element model ing and then invoked the reciprocity theorem to calculate the $Fr\'{e}chet$ derivative of the traveltime with respect to the subsurface parameter. Then, we used a damped least square method to invert the traveltimes of the Marmousi 2 model. Numerical tests demonstrate that the refraction tomography with large aperture data can be used to estimate the smooth velocity model for the prestack depth migration.
