A method is investigated to analyze the reliability of the gravity retaining wall which is designed to allow a limiting translational movement induces by the earthquake loading. Application of FOSM method to the Richards and Elms model yields a practical procedure for the analyses of the reliability and sensitivity of the retaining wall sujected to the earthquake. After examination of the practice (or the earthquake design of the retaining wall, the methods of the reliability analysis are considered. Finally, this study presents the step-by.step procedure for analyzing the reliability of the earth retaining structure for pratical convinience.
The satellite in space has a tiny size but is subject to the disturbance torques caused by various sources. The presence of environmental disturbance torques significantly affects the orient as well as the orbital motion of satellite. The sources of environmental effects on LEO Satellite attitude dynamics are various. Four of these, gravity gradient, Earth's magnetic field, solar radiation pressure and aerodynamic are dominant and deterministic. In this study, we describe the model of environmental disturbance torques acting on LEO Satellite and the effects of environmental disturbance torques on LEO Satellite attitude dynamics in detail.
Caisson-type structures are widely used as quay walls in coastal areas. In Korea, for a long time, many caisson-type quay walls have been constructed with a low front water depth. These facilities can no longer meet the requirements of current development. This study developed a new technology for deepening existing caisson-type quay walls using grouting and rubble mound excavation to economically reuse them. With this technology, quay walls could be renovated by injecting grout into the rubble mound beneath the front toe of the caisson to secure its structure. Subsequently, a portion of the rubble mound was excavated to increase the front water depth. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the seismic behavior of a renovated quay wall in comparison to that of an existing quay wall using centrifuge tests and numerical simulations. Two centrifuge model tests at a scale of 1/120 were conducted on the quay walls before and after renovation. During the experiments, the displacements, accelerations, and earth pressures were measured under five consecutive earthquake input motions with increasing magnitudes. In addition, systematic numerical analyses of the centrifuge model tests were also conducted with the PLAXIS 2D finite element (FE) program using a nonlinear elastoplastic constitutive model. The displacements of the caisson, response accelerations, deformed shape of the quay wall, and earth pressures were investigated in detail based on a comparison of the numerical and experimental results. The results demonstrated that the motion of the caisson changed after renovation, and its displacement decreased significantly. The comparison between the FE models and centrifuge test results showed good agreement. This indicated that renovation was technically feasible, and it could be considered to study further by testbed before applying in practice.
For the understanding the locus of the Quinling-Dabie-Sulu continental collision’s boundary and the underground structure of the sedimentray basin in the Yellow Sea, three dimensional density modelling is carrid out by using gravity dataset (Free Air Anomaly), which is measured by Tamhae 2, GIGAM in a period 2000-2002. The measured gravity anomaly in the investigations area is mainly responsed by depth distribution of the sedimentary basin. After comparing the sea-measured gravity data to CHAMP-GRACE satellite gravity data, I suggested that the high density model bodies extend mainly from the southern part of China to the middle-western part of the Korean Peninsula, which might be emplaced along the continental collision’s boundary. The total volume of very low density bodies modified by modelling might be about 20 000 km3.
Applying elastic plate model, we estimated elastic thickness and rigidity of the lithosphere in southern part of the Korean Peninsula($332km{\times}332km$ area of which center is $36.5^{\circ}N$ in latitude and $127.5^{\circ}E$ in longitude) by analysing terrain data and gravity data measured up to 2002. We tried to exclude the East Sea in choosing the study area because it has different tectonic environment. The mean Moho depth was estimated to be 30 km by power spectrum analysis of gravity data in the study area, Assuming one layer crust and applying elastic plate model, the loads with wavelengths of greater than 300 km are locally compensated, loads with wavelengths in the range 80-300km are partially supported by the strength of the lithosphere, and loads with wavelengths of less than 80km are almost completely supported by lithospheric strength. Assuming crustal model and rigidity, we calculated predicted coherence and compared it with observed coherence. As a result, we wert able to estimate the effective elastic thickness to be of 15 km(corresponding flexural rigidity is $3.0{\times}10^{22}Nm$). This indicates that the crust of the study area is relatively weaker than other old and stable continental regions but is similar to continental margins or oceanic area. The low rigidity could be explained by many tectonic and thermal activities such as orogenic activities, magmatic intrusions, volcanic activities, foldings, faultings, etc.

Bathymetry change due to the 2011 Tohoku (M9.0) earthquake was investigated through satellite altimetry-derived free-air gravity anomalies (SAFAGA) and shipborne measurements. The earthquake occurred at the plate boundaries near the northeastern coast of Japan, where the oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate along deep-sea trench. Data analyzed in this study include SAFAGA from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), shipborne bathymetry (SB) from the U.S. National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth-Science And Technology (JAMSTEC). To estimate the bathymetry change, a reference bathymetry before the earthquake was predicted by gravity-geologic method (GGM) and Smith & Sandwell’s (SAS) method. In comparison with the bathymetry models before the earthquake, GGM bathymetry model generated by a tuning density contrast of 17.04 g/cm3 by downward continuation method was selected because it shows better bathymetry in the short wavelength below about 6 km. From the results, remarkable bathymetry change of about ±50 m was found on the west side of the Japan Trench caused by the earthquake.
At 0843 UTC 30 May 2021, a commercial aircraft encountered severe turbulence at z = 11.5 km associated with the rapid development of Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) in the Gyeonggi Bay of Korea. To investigate the generation mechanisms of Near-Cloud Turbulence (NCT) near the MCS, Weather Research and Forecasting model was used to reproduce key features at multiple-scales with four nested domains (the finest ∆x = 0.2 km) and 112 hybrid vertical layers. Simulated subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy (SGS TKE) was located in three different regions of the MCS. First, the simulated NCT with non-zero SGS TKE at z = 11.5 km at 0835 UTC was collocated with the reported NCT. Cloud-induced flow deformation and entrainment process on the downstream of the overshooting top triggered convective instability and subsequent SGS TKE. Second, at z = 16.5 km at 0820 UTC, the localized SGS TKE was found 4 km above the overshooting cloud top. It was attributed to breaking down of vertically propagating convectively-induced gravity wave at background critical level. Lastly, SGS TKE was simulated at z = 11.5 km at 0930 UTC during the dissipating stage of MCS. Upper-level anticyclonic outflow of MCS intensified the environmental westerlies, developing strong vertical wind shear on the northeastern quadrant of the dissipating MCS. Three different generation mechanisms suggest the avoidance guidance for the possible NCT events near the entire period of the MCS in the heavy air traffic area around Incheon International Airport in Korea.
We developed a precise terrain correction program using triangular element method (TEM) for microgravity data processing. TEM calculates gravity attraction of arbitrary polyhedra whose surface is patched by triangles. We showed that TEM can calculate more precise terrain effect than conventional rectangular prism method. We tested the accuracy of TEM on the cone model which has analytic solution. Also, we tested the accuracy of TEM on the slope model, this results showed that there are big differences calculated by TEM and rectangular prsim method (RPM) on slope model. The developed terrain correction program was applied on the gravity data on the southern area near sea shore of Korean peninsula, calculated terrain effect very precisely.
Recent development of ultra-high and high degree Earth geopotential model opens new avenues to determine the Earth gravity field through spectral techniques to a very high accuracy and resolution. However, due to data availability, quality, and type, the performance of these new EGMs needs to be validated in regional or local scale geoid modeling. For establishing the best reference surface of geoid determination, recent geopotential models are evaluated using GPS/Leveling-derived geometric geoid and the Korean gravimetrical GEOID (KGEOID98) developed by National Geography Institute in 1998. Graphical and statistical comparisons are made for EGM96, GFZ97, PGM2000A and GPM98A models. The mean and standard deviation of difference between geometric height and geoid undulation calculated from GFZ97 are $1.9\pm{46.7}\;cm$. It is shown that the GFZ97 and the GPM98A models are better than the others in the Korean peninsula because the GFZ97 has a smaller bias. It means that the KGEOID98 needs some improvement using the GFZ97 instead of EGM96.
