  • It is realized that the extraterrestrial matter is in ionized state, plasma, so the matter of this kind behaves as not expected because of its sensitiveness to electric and magnetic fields and its ability to carry electric currents. This kind of subtle change can be observed by an instrument for the magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer usually mounted on the rocket and the satellite, and based on the ground observatory. The magnetometer is a useful instrument for the spacecraft attitude control and the Earth's magnetic field measurements for the scientific purpose. In this paper, we present the preliminary design and the test results of the two onboard magnetometers of KARl's (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) sounding rocket, KSR­III, which will be launched during the period of 2001-02. The KSR-III magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer, MAG/AIM (Attitude Information Magnetometer) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and of the search-coil magnetometer, MAG/SIM (Scientific Investigation Magnetometer) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations. With the MAG/AIM, the 3-axis attitude information can be acquired by the comparison of the resulting dc magnetic vector fields with the IGRF (International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The Earth's magnetic field fluctuations ranging from 10 to 1,000 Hz can also be observed with the MAG/SIM measurement.

  • 희토류금속과 천이금속의 화합물인 희토류 영구자석의 전기적, 자기적 성질등을 이해하고 자우리는 $SmCo_{5},\;NdB_{6},\;NdFe_{5},\;NdFe_{4}B$등의 비교적 간단한 희토류 화합물에 대한 자체충족적 전자구조 이론연구를 시도하였다. 국재 밀도함수 근사 LMTO(Linearized Muffin Tin Orbital)밴드 방법을 이용하여 $SmCo_{5}$ 영구자석을 포함한 희토류 금속 화학물의 기저상태의 물리적 파라미터들, 즉 에너지 밴드, 상태밀도, Stoner상수, 자기 모멘트 등을 구하여 이들의 전자기적 물성을 고찰하였다. Nd, Sm등의 희토류원소와 Fe, Co등의 천이원소, 또한 boron등의 원소들이 서로 금속 화합물을 형성할 때 일어나는 bonding효과, 즉 희토류금속의 f-전자와 d-전자, 천이금속의 d-전자, 또한 boron 금속의 s,p-전자와의 상호 작용, 그에 따른 전자구조, 자성의 변화에 대한 연구를 수행하였다.

Magnetic Turbulence Associated with Magnetic Dipolarizations in the Near-Tail of the Earth's Magnetosphere: Test of Anisotropy

  • In this paper, the anisotropic nature of the magnetic turbulence associated with magnetic dipolarizations in the Earth's plasma sheet is examined. Specifically, we determine the power spectral indices for the perpendicular and parallel components of the fluctuating magnetic field with respect to the background magnetic field, and compare them in order to identify possible anisotropic features. For this study, we identify a total of 47 dipolarization events in February 2008 using the magnetic field data observed by the THEMIS A, D and E satellites when they are situated near the neutral sheet in the near-Earth tail. For the identified events, we estimate the spectral indices for the frequency range from 1.3 mHz to 42 mHz. The results show that the degree of anisotropy, as defined by the ratio of the spectral index of the perpendicular components to that of the parallel component, can range from ~0.2 to ~2.6, and there are more events associated with the ratio greater than unity (i.e., the perpendicular index being greater than the parallel index) than those which are anisotropic in the opposite sense. This implies that the dipolarization-associated turbulence of the magnetic field is often anisotropic, to some non-negligible degree. We then discuss how this result differs from what the theory of homogeneous, anisotropic, magnetohydrodynamic turbulence would predict.

Content and Distribution of Transition Metals and Rare Earth Elements in Magnetically and Mechanically Separated Brown Coal Ash

  • Coal ash is known to contain a noticeable amount of valuable elements, including transition metals and lanthanides. Therefore it is quite actual problem to extract them for metallurgy and other applications. This paper presents the results of high gradient magnetic and mechanical separation, microscopy, element analyses and optical spectroscopy of brown coal ash taken from the combustion camera and chimney-stalk of Angren thermal power station. The separated magnetic fraction was 3.4 wt.%, where the content of Fe in ferrospheres increased to 58 wt.%. The highest contents of Fe and rare earth elements were found in the fine fractions of $50-100{\mu}m$. Optical absorption spectroscopy of water solutions of the magnetic fractions revealed $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ions in the ratio of ~1:1. The separated coal ash could be used for cleaning of technological liquid waste by means of the high gradient magnetic field.

  • 본 논문에서는 지구 자기장을 측정하여 방향을 인식하는 시스템 구현에 있어 하드웨어적으로 회로를 부가하는 방식 보다는 소프트웨어적인 알고리즘을 추가하여 지구 자기장의 지역적 변화와 주변 환경에 적응력을 갖는 측정 시스템을 구축한다. 소프트웨어적인 알고리즘에는 뉴럴 네트워크(neural network)를 사용하여, 입력 패턴에 따른 패턴간의 관련성을 형성하고 학습을 통해 패턴들의 특징과 관련 정보가 기억 되었을 때 출력이 입력에 feedback하는 연상회로망을 구성하여 방향 인식에 사용할 수 있는 소프트웨어를 구현하고 그 실효성에 대해 입증한다.

  • 직육면체 프리즘에 대한 중력, 자력, 중력 변화율 텐서 및 자력 변화율 텐서 반응식을 정리하였다. 직교 좌표계에서 직육면체 프리즘에 대한 삼중 적분으로 수직 중력을 유도하고, 직육면체의 축 방향 대칭성을 이용하여 순환 치환으로 두 개의 수평 중력 성분을 유도한다. 벡터 중력을 각 성분 별로 미분하여 중력 변화율 텐서를 유도한다. 포아송(Poisson) 관계식을 이용하면 일정한 방향으로 자화된 벡터 자력은 중력 변화율 텐서로부터 얻어진다. 벡터 자력을 각 방향으로 미분하여 최종적으로 자력 변화율 텐서를 유도하였다.

The results show that for many events the spectral indices are larger for fluctuations in the ${\Psi}$ direction than for those in the other two directions, where the ${\Psi}$ direction is perpendicular to the background magnetic field line and to the azimuthal direction. This implies that the dipolarization-associated turbulence of the magnetic field is often anisotropic. We discuss how this result differs from what is expected from the theory of homogeneous, anisotropic, MHD turbulence.

  • 일정고도에서 얻어진 중력 혹은 자력탐사자료에 대하여 보다 높은 고도에서의 값으로 연속하여 구하는 방법, 즉 상향연속의 경우 2차원 푸리에변환을 사용할 수 있다. 기존의 상향연속 방법에서는 지구의 곡률이 고려되지 않았으나, 지역이 수백킬로미터 이상으로 넓은 경우 곡률이 고려됨이 바람직하다. 본 연구에서는 지구의 곡률효과를 산정하는 중/자력 마당의 새로운 상향연속방법을 계발하였다.

Physics of the Earth's plasma sheet associated with substorm triggering

  • The plasma sheet of the Earth's magnetosphere is a sheet of hot plasmas in the magnetotail region, dividing the two (northern and southern) lobes of the Earth's magnetic field. It is the key region that is often closely linked to various electromagnetic dynamics in the Earth's magnetosphere-ionosphere system. In particular, it is the region that is most crucial for substorms, which is one of the most dynamic phenomena in the Earth's magnetosphere. The question of substorm triggering remains highly controversial until today, and at the center of the controversy there are several critical physics issues of the plasma sheet. In this talk I will introduce some of the physics issues of the plasma sheet. The specific topics that this talk will cover are (i) the general properties of the plasma sheet, (ii) fast plasma jets and plasma transport problem, (iii) stability/instability problem, and (iv) effects of thin current sheet. I will also present some of our group's recent findings regarding these topics, as obtained by comprehensive analyses of various observational data. The level and content of this talk are designed to be comprehensible to not only space physicists but also the scientists in a related field such as solar and heliospheric physics.

  • Gravity and magnetic surveys were carried out to investigate the three-dimensional configuration and characteristics of the landfills at Nanjido waste disposal site. For terrain correction and three-dimensional density inversion of gravity data an algorithm, which calculates the gravity effect of a three-dimensional body by using the solid angle method, is developed. This algorithm has been proved to give more accurate terrain correction values for the small survey area having varied topography like Nanjido site as compared with widely used methods such as Hammer's method and multiquadric equation method. Density inversion of gravity anomaly data gives very useful information about the lateral and vertical variation of the landfills, which can be used to discriminate the kinds of wastes. The average density of filled materials appears to be $1.7\;g/cm^3$ which is much higher than the value $(0.8\;g/cm^3)$ estimated by Seoul City. The lateral variation of density shows high correlation with the pattern of ongoing depression of the landfills. The northern region of the landfill no. 1, which shows low density and high depression, is closely associated with the industrial waste and sludge filled area. The magnetic anomaly data provide information about relative concentration of magnetic materials, which is also very useful to investigate characteristics of the fills. Several high positive anomaly regions on the reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly map are appeared to be associated with the industrial waste fills, but certain industrial waste fills show low negative anomalies. This kind of magnetic information can be used in selecting drilling locations over landfills away from buried metal products during the stabilization process.
