  • Even though grass species are one of major importance in livestock industry, the response of intergeneric hybridization of Lolium and Festuca and interspecific hybridization of Lolium m.X Lolium p. to Korean climatic condition has not been adequately documented. This reasearch was conducted to examine the growth characteristics and dry matter yield of Festulolium, cv. Felopa and C-Stamm N 66 and hybrid ryegrass, cv. Maja and Tetilelite. 1. The early growth of Italian ryegrass was better than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. The plant length and height of Italian ryegrass were longer/taller than those of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium, but the number of tillers of Italian ryegrass was less than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. 2. Festuloliu and hybrid ryegrass were more tolerant than Italian ryegrass to winter killing, 70-80% of tillers was survived. 3. After wintering, early spring growth of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were better than that of Italian ryegrass. Dry matter yield of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were more than that of Italian ryegrass. 4. Spikes of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium (C-Stamm N66) were more than those of Italian ryegrass. Seed yield per $m^2$ of hybrid ryegrass and Italian ryegrass were almost same, but that of Festuloliu was lower.

  • Sorghum is rich source of various phytochemicals including phenolic acids that have potential to significantly impact human health. Phytochemical production may be induced by not only genotype but a number of environmental factors including temperatures and amount of sunshine. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of planting date and harvesting stage on the agronomic and quality traits of 'Donganme' grain sorghum variety developed to produce high antioxidant activity. 'Donganme' were planted in three locations at four dates from early May to early July. Each planted fractions were harvested five times 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 days after head shooting date, respectively. Significant difference existed between the growth period and the agronomic traits. The interaction effects planting date and harvesting date was significant for plant height, tiller production, grain yield and antioxidant activity, indicating that low temperature and integrated sunshine influence on that traits. The result showed that antioxidant activity production occurred when the sorghum crop was grown in late season although the yield is lower. To produce antioxidant activity from sorghum grain need to consider the relation between the yield and nutrition component simultaneously.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of seed disinfectant, in control of brown leaf blight, growth characteristics, and dry root yield in the cultivation of Alisma plantago after early maturing rice cropping. Experimental plot was laid out in split plots design with three replications. The major seed disinfectants were benomyl Wp, 20%, Captan Wp, 50%, Triferine Ec, 17%, Etridia zole Ec, 25%, and Thioplant-mythyl Wp, 50%. Even though seed disinfectant treated had no effect on the growth and flowering date of Alisma plantago, dry root yield was increased largely with benomyl Wp, 20%, in seed disinfectant than in the other seed disinfectants and contorl. All seed disinfectants had no injury with standard dosage. But all seed disinfectants had slight injury in the double dosage level for the Alisma plantago. On the basis of yield, vegetative and disease paramerer, benomyl Wp (20%) ($100g/20{\ell}$) had shown superior performance, however, all the seed disinfectants are effective as compare to without treatment.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of light shading around the heading stage on grain yield and its components of rice. Early, medium, and late-maturing varieties were trected with the light shading of 50% and 75% from the reduction division stage to 20 days after heading date. Heading date were delayed 2-3 days, whereas the mid -late varieties, Sangpung- byeo, and Bongkwang- byeo were no significantly affected. Culm length was increased and panicle exsersion was reduced as the shading treatments become higher, and the degree of the shading effect was more intensive at 75% of shading. The rate of spikllet degeneration was higher at the secondary rachis branches than the primary rachis branch. The early maturing varieties showed the higher rate of spikelet degeneration. Spikelet number was reduced 12-15, spikelet sterility was increased and ripening rate was declined by the shading treatments. Grain yield was decreased by 30-40% at the shading treatment of 50%, and 50% at the shade treatment of 75%.

  • To investigate the effect of Mycorrhiza (Glomus intradics) and Rhizobium inoculation on the N, P utilization and growth response of Alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) and Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in mixed sward, four treatments (non-inoculation, Control; Mycorrhiza inoculation: M; Rhizobium inoculation, R and Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium inoculation, M+R) were applied. The associated analyses were canied out on the early vegetative growth stage (DAS 56, 56 days after seeding) and on the early flowering stage (DAS 126). The decreased rate of total N and P content in soil, with advancing plant growth, was relatively higher in the M and M + R treatment than control. The content of availabie phosphorus in soil at DAS 126 increased by about 34 and 38 % in M and M+R treatment compared to control (189.2 mg PzOskg DM), while non-significant changes was observed in R treatment. Total N uptake and P uptake in the control at DAS 126 were 44.71 and 3.52 mglplant in mixed sward, respectively. About 71, 98 and 197 % of increases in total N uptake and 70, 72 and 11 1 % of increases in total P uptake were estimated in M, R and M+R treatment. Comparing to control, total dry matter yield significantly increased by 27, 33 and 53 %, and crude protein yield also by 78, 83 and 204 %, respectively, in M, R and M+R treatment. The present data indicated that mycorrhiza orland rhizobium inoculation improved N, P utilization of both alfalfa and perennial ryegrass plants, and consequently increased total yield (especially by dual inoculation, M+R). • This experiment was carried out to investigate the eft'ects of different seeding dates on the agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of fall sown cats(Avena sativa L.). The experiment was conducted at the forage experimental field, Seoul National University. Suweon in 1990. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Present data indicated that plant and ear heights were decreased as the seeding date was delayed. Dry matter accumulation was increased due to the higher plant and ear heights. 1. When oats was seeded on August 20. the first heading and 50% heading dates were recorded on October 4 and 15, respectively. And when oats was seeded on August 25. the first heading and 5 0'!4 heading dates were observed on October 13 and 18. respectively. As seeding date was delayed for one day. the heading date was delayed for two days. 3. The dry mattcr percentage of oats seeded on August 20 was 20.1%, but that of oats seeded after August 10 was 15.1 to 16.7%. 4. According to the contents of CP. ADF and NDF, oats seeded on August 20 and 25 was evaluated to be the 3rd or 4th grade hay. and the other oats sceded after August 15 was recorded the 2nd or 3rd grade hay as proposed by AFGC. 5. There are no significant dry matter yield differences among the seeding dates of oats such as August 20, 25 and 30. but a significant yield difference was recorded between oats seeded in August and September. The same trend as the dry matter yield was observed in in vitro digestible dry matter and crude protein yields of oats seeded in August and September. According to the results. early seeding of early matuaring oats may be a better option than late seeding after August 30 for silage or hay production following silage corn harvest in the middle northern area of Korea.
