The design flexibility and robustness have become key factors to handle various sources of uncertainties at the early phase of design. Even though designers are uncertain about which single values to specify, they usually have a preference for certain values over others. In the first and second reports of a four-part paper, a set-based design approach has been proposed for achieving design flexibility and robustness while capturing designer's preference, and its effectiveness has been illustrated with a simple vehicle side-door impact beam design problem. This report presents the applicability of the proposed design approach to the large-scale multi-objective design optimization with a successful implementation of real vehicle side-door structure design.
This research aimed to study the making of western men's coats in the early 19th century. First of all, the study figured out the concepts and forms of western men's tops in the early 19th century by collecting and categorizing pictures including engravings, paintings and pattern books, and literature data. Second, this research identified the patterns, sewing, and design techniques by examining the pattern books on men's clothing in the early 19th century, and analyzed the preserved costumes to restore the selected models. Third, this research presented historical evidences and patterns after designing a men's tailcoat of the early $19^{th}$ century and checking the fit based on the analyzed forms and design techniques. The research discovered that the analyzed results between the tailcoat forms depicted in literature, pictures and pattern books and preserved costumes were almost identical. From this, it can be assumed that the tailors followed a manual when designing garments during that time given the similarity between historical records and remaining items. In addition, it can be seen that the forms and designing methods of men's clothing in the 19th century were almost similar to that of the modern menswear, despite the differences in producing process.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the effects of conservative treatment intervention for individual with scoliosis. Methods: Studies were selected through a search of computerized databases of the literature (KERIS, 2000-2010) using "early detection", "conservative treatment", "exercise", "physical therapy", "manipulation", "chiropractic", "therapy", "taping" and "orthosis" as keywords. Selected articles were classified by research design and statistical methods. Results: Application of the search strategy to the KERIS databases resulted in 132 articles. Based on titles and abstracts, 17 studies were selected, excluding articles of overlapping study, surgery, pharmacologic therapy and no correcting aim under conservative treatment. Among the 17 selected studies, the majorityof study design consisted of one group pretest-posttest design and additionally most of these studies were paired (or independent) t-test. The most frequently used intervention was exercise therapy. Conclusion: All articles showed that interventions were effective. Thus, early detection of scoliosis may be connected participation of early conservative treatment. It is important to reduce prevalence of scoliosis in adolescents using regular evaluation as an effective measure.
As over 70% of the total life cycle cost (LCC) of a product is committed at the early design stage, designers are in an important position to substantially reduce the LCC of the products they design by giving due to life cycle implications of their design decisions. During early design stages, there may be competing concepts with dramatic differences. In addition, the detailed information is scarce and decisions must be made quickly. Thus, both the overhead in developing parametric LCC models fur a wide range of concepts, and the lack of detailed information make the application of traditional LCC models impractical. A different approach is needed, because a traditional LCC method is to be incorporated in the very early design stages. This paper explores an approximate method for providing the preliminary LCC, Learning algorithms trained to use the known characteristics of existing products might allow the LCC of new products to be approximated quickly during the conceptual design phase without the overhead of defining new LCC models. Artificial neural networks are trained to generalize product attributes and LCC data from pre-existing LCC studies. Then the product designers query the trained artificial model with new high-level product attribute data to quickly obtain an LCC for a new product concept. Foundations fur the learning LCC approach are established, and then an application is provided.
The needs of collaboration among design participants spread in different locations is emphasized in the early design stage in order to not only save time and provide places to meet and talk, but also to save cost for those events as well: This is being realized by the Internet, which helps support a networked, integrated real-time multi-user environment. As the base for collaboration activities moves from physical places to cyberspace, the methods of connecting every participant by means of a computer technology have been desired and considered. This study aims at investigating today's collaboration technology in the architectural design process, especially focused on the early stages, in terms of temporal dimensions. In addition, major concepts for and previous efforts and tools of collaborative design have been examined, and a specific recommendation has been proposed for future development of collaborative architectural design systems: That is distributed collaboration, which is accessible and comprehensible to all the professionals in the building design team, which not only allows the sharing of information but also the sharing of understanding, and which facilitates the development of design tools for different aspects of the envisioned collaborative design environment.
This study examined the longitudinal effects of media usage by early school-age children and of maternal parenting stress on children's school adjustment. The study focused on the mediating effect of executive function difficulty. Longitudinal data to examine the hypothetical model were drawn from the eighth (2015) through tenth (2017) waves of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE). A total of 581 children (293 boys and 288 girls) and their mothers were included. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation model, and bootstrapping analysis were applied using SPSS 25.0 and Amos 26.0. The results are as follows. First, no significant correlation was found between early school-age children's media usage and maternal parenting stress. Second, neither media usage by early school-age children nor maternal parenting stress were found to directly affect children's school adjustment. Third, media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress were shown to indirectly affect children's school adjustment via executive function difficulties. In other words, higher levels of media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress during the first grade lead to greater executive function difficulties after a year, which, in turn, lead to a lower level of school adjustment in the third grade. This study indicates the need to develop practical support for the psychological wellbeing of mothers while they are performing their role as a parent and for children in maintaining suitable levels of media usage during early childhood.
Remodeling for an aged building is emerging as a potential alternative towards the future of the building industry. It is a more effective method than the new construction in environmental friendly view. Most of remodeling were aimed at the improvement of the function of the deteriorated finishing materials. But, at the early stage of remodeling process, energy performance of a building can be improved by adopting passive design solutions such as daylighting and natural ventilation. The purpose of this study is to explain the passive design strategy in remodeling process and to suggest a application of LT method. LT method is an energy-design tool which responds to parameters available early in design development. It provides an output of annual primary energy for lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation in non-domestic buildings. LT method basically uses the concept of passive zone and non-passive zones and should be used to evaluate the energy performance of a number of options and to make comparisons. In this paper, the process of LT method is introduced and investigated an applicability in our office building.
There are many researches to make low-energy building. Lots of them focus on facility systems and insulation performance of building materials. However, not only systematic solutions but also approaches in early design stages are important to reduce energy consumption. Using BIM(Building Information Modelling) is considered as an effective and efficient way to simulate building energy and decide alternatives than traditional energy simulation because BIM based energy simulation makes to reduce much time for energy modeling. This study focuses on development of optimized geometry for super tall office buildings in Seoul, Korea. Specifically, length to width ratio and building orientation are main topics of this study because these two topics are the most basic and preceding factors deciding mass design. In this study, Revit MEP 2011 and Ecotect Analysis 2011 are used to make case models and calculate energy load in early design stages. Energy properties of material abide by Korean Standards for Energy Conservation in Building, Korean Guideline for Energy Conservation in Public Office and ASHRAE Standard in USA. This study presents best length to width ratio of plan and optimized orientation by evaluating the case models. Furthermore, this study suggests what should be considered for each case to decrease energy load.
