  • In order to make preparation of the Metallogenic Map of Korea, the writer have to collect and review the data of general geology and ore deposits of Korea which have been published up to date. The geology of Korea has been briefly simplified and grouped into the 15 formations so as to provide the base geologic map for making the Metallogenic Map of Korea. Geologic provinces of south Korea are divided into four, that is, Gyeonggi·Ryeongnam province, Ogcheon geosynclinal province, Gyeongsang basin province and Tertiary province. In the view of tectonics and related granites, the major orogenies in south Korea are as follows; Ryeongnam orogeny, Taebaeg disturbance, post-Sangweon disturbance, post-Joseon disturbance, Bulgugsa disturbance and Yeonil disturbance. Metallogenic epochs might coincide with the period of syntectonic or subsequent igneous rock intrusions accompanied with the above listed orogenies and disturbances. Thus, metallogenic epochs that are certain in Korea so far are; Precambrian periods, Paleozoic periods, Jurassic to early Cretaceous periods, late Cretaceous to early Tertiary periods, Quaternary periods and age-unknown periods. The Metallogenic Map of Korea shows 444 ore deposits and/or mines by symbols on a background adopted from the existing geologic and tectonic map. The 444 metallic and non-metallic deposits are categorized by the commodities they contain, size, geologic environment, mineralized age and mineralogic nature.

  • Based on the petrologic and age data of the Cretaceous to early Tertiary granites in south Korea, we propose a new tectonic model reflecting their temporal and spatial variations. A number of petrographic and geochemical studies on the granites suggest that they originated from the magma formed by subduction of oceanic crust in continental margin and were emplaced in epizone. The MMEs with various shapes and sizes, which were produced due to the magma mixing caused by the injection of mafic magma from mantle during the crystallization of the granitic magma, are observed in the granites. The distributions of the MMEs and ages of the granites show a distinctive spatio-temporal distribution pattern. The distribution pattern can be explained by a multiple slab window model related to the ridge subduction of Izanagi-Pacific plates during the Late Cretaceous.

  • A spinifex textured komatiite sample of Early Tertiary age, from the Gorgona Islands of Colombia in South America, was petrographically and geochemically studied, and compared with the previous researches of the komatiites including other Precambrian komatiites in South Africa, Western Australia and Canada. The sample shows the komatiitic characteristics in its petrography and geochemistry very well, i.e. in high specific gravity (2.98) and density (3.2), rock forming minerals, spinifex texture, major and race element abundances and REE pattern. In particular the REE pattern for it strongly suggests that the Gorgona komatiite must have been crystallized from a magma generated from a depleted mantle as that of Munro Township area in Ontario, Canada which is pyroxenite komatiite or basaltic komatiite of Group I of the Archean.

  • Background: This study evaluates the bacterial pathogens of Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in a tertiary referral hospital. Methods: A total of 109 bacterial pathogens from 91 adult patients with VAP, who were admitted to the medical intensive care unit from January 2008 to December 2009, were examined. Clinical characteristics, bacterial pathogens, and resistance profiles were analyzed. Results: Staphylococcus aureus (44%) was the most frequently isolated. Acinetobacter baumanii (30%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12%), Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (6%), and Serratia marcescens (2%) were isolated from the transtracheal aspirates or bronchoalveolar lavage in patients with VAP. There was no significant difference of bacterial pathogens between early and late onset VAP. All isolated S. aureus were methicillin resistant S. aureus; the imipenem resistance rate of A. baumanii was 69%. Conclusion: The two most frequent pathogens of VAP were S. aureus and A. baumanii. There were no pathogenic differences between early and late onset VAP.

  • Nocardiosis is an uncommon opportunistic bacterial infection which becomes a significant health problem due to its increasing incidence and high mortality rate. However, many nocardiosis patients are underdiagnosed by physicians. To summarize the clinical characteristics and management of nocardiosis would help with better diagnosis and prognosis of nocardiosis. This retrospective study was conducted based on the medical records of nocardiosis patients between January 2015 and December 2021 in a tertiary hospital in China. Overall, 44 nocardiosis patients with 54 specimens were included. The patients consisted of 26 males and 18 females with a mean age of 50.4 ± 13.2 years. Among 44 patients, 26 (59.1%) were previously given immunosuppressive therapy. Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) were the most common underlying disease (16/44). The most frequent infection sites were the lungs (17/44) and skin or soft tissues (8/44). Common symptoms included cough (23/44), expectoration (18/44), fever (15/44), and subcutaneous abscesses (15/44). Forty-five out of 54 specimens (83.3%) required over 48 hours of culture time for nocardiosis detection. Thirty-six patients were cured or improved, 5 patients were discharged from the hospital due to poor prognosis, and 1 patient died. The average diagnosis time of poor prognosis cases was 19.7 days, which was significantly longer than those of improved or cured patients (7.3 days). Immunosuppressed patients comprise a large part of nocardiosis cases, which is worth attention in clinical practice. Early diagnosis, specifically through prolonged cultivation time of specimen, could help achieve better prognosis of nocardiosis patients.

  • Road is built continuously along with development of industry and cut slope is happened necessarily in road construction. Geoengineers are executing cut slope stability analysis considering various cut slope condition such as topography, geology, hydraulic condition and so on. The Tertiary Jungja Basin is located in the southeastern coastal area of the Korea Peninsula. Jungja Basin area is created by geotectonic movement of the plate after Early Miocene epoch. The northwestern and southwestern boundary of the basin is fault zone. The Basement rock is hornfels (Ulsan Formation). Basin-fills consist of extrusive volcanic rock(Tangsa Andesites), unconsolidated fluviatile conglomerate(Kangdong Formation) and shallow brackish-water sandstone(Sinhyun Formation). The characteristics of cut slopes in this area is different with cut slopes in the other site. Soil layers in this area is unconsolidated sediments and is not formed the weathering and erosion of the rock. So, the depth of soil layer is very thick. Faults of this area are northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest direction. Expandible clay mineral as smectite, chlorite et al. detected from fault gouge using XRD. Therefore, Jungja Basin area must consider the characteristics of the faults and soil layers thickness necessarily cut slopes stability analysis.

  • Carbonate minerals are examined by cathodoluminescence microscopy and chemical analysis to characterize the carbonate materials occurring in the Tertiary marine basin. The microscopic technique with cathodoluminescence gives new informations that are not obtainable by conventional microscopic techniques. The carbonate cements in sandstones appear to be uniform with transmitted light or with crossed prisms. but the inspection with cathololuminescence reveals foraminiferal tests and rhomb crystals in the carbonate cements. The chemical analysis indicates that the intense luminescence depends mainly on the presence of$ Mn^{ 2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ as activator ions, but the $Fe^{2+}$ also acts as an important quencher ion when Fe concentration in dolomite is over 10,000 ppm. The dolomites, which are rich in calcium, are formed at the early stage of diagenesis at a temperature of about 60 ~ $70^{\circ}C$.

  • It has recently been proposed that granites can be divided into hot and cold ones by absence and presence of inherited zircon, respectively, which is closely related to zircon saturation temperature. The Phanerozoic granites in South Korea are divided into high- and low-Zr groups in a $SiO_2-Zr$ diagram, which appears to be related to their intrusive age. Most Triassic-Jurassic granites belong to low-Zr group, whereas most Cretaceous-Early Tertiary granites belong to the high-Zr group with the exception of geographically distinct Masan and Jinhae granites that belong low-Zr group. Calculated zircon saturation temperatures using major elements and Zr contents indicate that the Cretaceous-Early Tertiary granites $(608-834^{\circ}C,\;average\; 782\pm31^{\circ}C)$ except for the Masan and Jinhae granites $(average\;759\pm16^{\circ}C)$ show higher temperature than the Triassic-Jurassic granites $(642-824^{\circ}C,\;average\;756\pm31^{\circ}C)$. U-Pb zircon isotope data of the Triassic-Jurassic granites reported so far define discordia in a concordia diagram, which indicates presence of inherited zircon and agrees with their low zircon saturation temperatures. So the Triassic-Jurassic granites appear to belong to cold granite. On the other hand, presence or absence of inherited zircon has not been known for the Cretaceous-Early Tertiary granites with relatively high zircon saturation temperature, so that their classification into hot or cold granite awaits further study. Nevertheless, the Creatceous-Early Tertiary granites may have formed at higher temperature than the Triassic-Jurassic granites, since zircon saturation temperature reflects formation temperature of magma to a certain degree.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of interpersonal relationship ability, job stress, and stress coping type on the turnover intention of nurses in the early stage of their careers. Methods: Data were collected from 136 early stage nurses from two general hospitals and one tertiary hospital in Chungbuk province. An early stage nurse was defined as the nurse with a work experience of 3 to 36 months. The collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, Person's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: It was seen that turnover intention had a negative correlation with interpersonal competency (r=-.20, p=.020) and a positive correlation with job stress (r=.56, p<.001). Job stress due to work over load, inadequate compensation and working environment, interpersonal relationship ability, and length of clinical career were significant factors influencing turnover intention (p<.05). These variables explained for 50.4% of the variance in turnover intention. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an interpersonal relationship ability improvement program to decrease turnover intention among early stage nurses by helping them to successfully adapt to their job. Moreover, it is important to bring about continuous improvements in terms of provision of adequate workload and appropriate rewards, and creation of a suitable work environment to reduce the job stress of early stage nurses.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of early tracheostomy on clinical outcomes in patients requiring prolonged acute mechanical ventilation (≥96 hours). Methods: Data from 575 patients (69.4% male; median age, 68 years), hospitalized in the medical intensive care unit (ICU) of a university-affiliated tertiary care hospital March 2008-February 2017, were retrospectively evaluated. Early and late tracheostomy were designated as 2-10 days and >10 days after translaryngeal intubation, respectively. Results: The 90-day cumulative mortality rate was 47.5% (n=273) and 258 patients (44.9%) underwent tracheostomy. In comparison with the late group (n=115), the early group (n=125) had lower 90-day mortality (31.2% vs. 47.8%, p=0.012), shorter stays in hospital and ICU, shorter ventilator length of stay (median, 43 vs. 54; 24 vs. 33; 23 vs. 28 days; all p<0.001), and a higher rate of transfer to secondary care hospitals with post-intensive care settings (67.2% vs. 43.5% p<0.001). Also, the total medical costs of the early group were lower during hospital stays than those of the late group (26,609 vs. 36,973 USD, p<0.001). Conclusion: Early tracheostomy was associated with lower 90-day mortality, shorter ventilator length of stay and shorter lengths of stays in hospital and ICU, as well as lower hospital costs than late tracheostomy.
