  • The present study aimed to develop an instrument to assess young children's understanding of science inquiry skills. For the purposes of the study, based on analysis of literature and evaluation tools related to young children's science inquiry skills, five categories of understanding science inquiry skills including observing, classifying, predicting, measuring, and discussing were selected. Then 30 test items were developed and verified three times through opinions from science education and early childhood education professionals and teachers. Finally, a total of 19 test items within five categories were developed. The 19 items' item difficulty, item discrimination, and item internal consistency were verified statistically. In addition, concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of the items were verified by the significant correlation coefficients. The instrument developed in this study was administered to 300 children who were 3, 4, and 5 years old. The results showed that 5 year old children had better competence to understand science inquiry skills than 4 and 3 year old children, while there were no differences in the competence between boys and girls.

  • Until now, research to integrate art activities and science education have been making steady progress in the field of primary education and early childhood education that are directly involved in the art education of students. However, some science educators were interested in visualizing the artifacts by using design principles and experimental results through STEAM education. So, when conducting lessons for integrating science education with art activities, research is needed on the changing of the students' ability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of science experiments in collaboration with art activities for students' self-directed learning skills and creative personality in elementary school. This study was applied to 30 students(16 male, 14 female) of 4th grade in Changwon C elementary school. The teaching materials of this study was extracted some of the experiments from the 2007 revised national curriculum in elementary science textbook and 'Teachers for Exciting Science'. Experimental treatment was performed over a total of 10 class 5 subjects and a pre-post test was conducted through G-TAGAS. As a result, science experiments in collaboration with art activities have improved significantly students' self-directed learning skills and creative personality.

  • Creativity is the most important characteristic and ability in the 21st century. Recently leading people in Korean society are aware of the significance of the enhancement of the creativity. However, Korean students are less likely to take initiative or depart from standard ways of thinking or doing things, because Korean Confucius culture puts an emphasis on collectivism. An individual has an obligation to conform in order to avoid conflict and maintain social harmony. The rule of respecting parents and teachers leads to a lack of self-expression and entails silence. Brainstorming technique developed by American Osbron, who originated the group brainstorming in 1953, is the most popular creative thinking method for the students. Brainstorming technique has two principles : ideation can be more productive if criticism is concurrently excluded; The more ideas the better. In doing BS, each panel should consist of chairperson, an assistant chairperson, recorder, and 10 others including 2-3 females. However there are several problems in doing group BS, such as production blocking, uniformity thinking, evaluation apprehension, and social loafing. This study was undertaken to investigate the proper way of forming Brainstorming groups with Korean students according to the Sasang Constitutional Medicine originated by Korean Lee Je-ma in 1894. Human beings are classified in four group in Sasang Constitutional Medicine : Taeyang-In, Teaum-In, Soyang-In and Soum-In. Two Yang-Ins are more self-expressive : Taeyang-In has very unique ides and thoughts; Soyang-In is very humorous and like to present his/her ideas. On the other hand, two Um-Ins are passive and are not likely to speak out their ideas in group. Therefore, in this investigation firstly, the brainstorming group was formed with two Yang-Ins (Taeyang-In and Soyang-In) and two Um-Ins(Taeum-In and Soum-In) separately and secondly, Yang-Ins and Um-Ins were mixed. And the first method was compared with the second method in terms of the degree of participation of the group members and finally the better grouping method to produce more and better ideas was discussed and suggested for the educational system.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the variables of metropolitan and provincial offices of education that affect the academic achievement of unit schools, and to predict how academic achievements dynamically change with the support of offices of education. The results of academic achievement of 606 general high schools in 16 metropolitan and provincial offices of education(rates of attaining more than normal education in Korean, English, and mathematics subjects) were analyzed using a multi-level model and system dynamics. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the provincial and provincial offices of education's efforts to increase the efficiency of local education finance, the efforts to reduce teacher administration, and the facilitation of faculty training were the variables of the provincial and provincial offices of education. In addition, through policy experiments, efforts to revitalize teacher training were the most influential factors in academic achievement of unit schools, followed by efforts to streamline local education finances and to reduce the administrative work of teachers. In order to improve the academic achievement of unit schools, the functions of the metropolitan and provincial offices of education should be strengthened based on the education accountability, and policies need to be established in the mid- to long-term perspective.
