  • The purpose of the present study was to examine gaze effects on spatial and kinematic characteristics during a pointing task. Subjects were asked to watch and point to an aimed target (2 mm in diameter) displayed on a vertically mounted board. Four gaze conditions were developed as combinations of "seeing-aiming" in terms of the eye movements: Focal-Focal (F-F), Focal-Fixing (F-X), Fixing-Focal (X-F), and Fixing-Fixing (X-X). Both the home target and an aimed target were presented for 1 second and then were disappeared in F-F and X-F. In X-F and X-X, only an aimed target disappeared after 1 second. Subjects were asked to point (with index finger tip) to an aimed target accurately as soon as the aimed target was removed. A significant main effect of gaze was found (p<.01) for normalized movement time. Peripheral retina targets had significantly larger absolute error compared to central retina targets on the x (medio-lateral) and z (superior-inferior) axes (p<.01). A significant undershooting to peripheral retina targets on the x axis was found (p<.01). F-F and X-F had larger peak velocities compared to F-X and X-X (p<.01). F-F and X-F were characterized by more time spent in the deceleration phase compared to F-X and X-X (p<.01). The present study demonstrates that central vision utilizes a form of on-line visual processing to reach to an object, and thus increases spatial accuracy. However, peripheral vision utilizes a relatively off-line visual processing with a dependency on proprioceptive information.

  • In this paper, the new system which improve the previously reported "Implementation to human-computer interface system with motion tracking using OpenCV and FPGA" is introduced and in this system, a character selection system for the physically uncomfortable patients is proposed. Using OpenCV, the eye area is detected, the pupil position is determined, and then the results are sent to the FPGA, and the character is selected finally. The method to minimize the pupil movement of the patient is used to output the character according to the user's intention. Using OpenCV, various computer vision algorithms can be easily applied, and using programmable FPGA, a pupil motion recognition and character selection system are implemented with a low cost.

  • In this study, the author aims to examine that the image for specific space coming through vision is to reveal how people perceive the space through vision and whether the perceived space includes the role as the catalyst that causes the following activities. It is believed that the fact which elements are remembered as the whole expression as well as the memorized images that humans have regarding the space should act as the important factor in terms of space perception. The conclusions from this study are as follow; 1) By analyzing the frequency of observation time that were obtained from the examinee, it was possible to classify the property of observation with S areas. Besides, it was possible to the meanings that the design elements have in each area. The establishment of the areas are considered as the important factor to examine which design elements have drawn the attention. 2) In case of I area which showed the most design factors that would lead examinee's vision or have interests in the examinee views, it showed that it stared the lower parts from the middle of the Image spatially, which was the most stable position from the image with strong tendency for staring at this area. 3) The most frequently stared area was the lower part of the middle, however, while the I area gazed the right side of the middle, II area faced the left side more so that it was revealed that it stared at the lower part of the middle and right side, then, moved to left. 4) Despite the frequent observation, some areas had very low or few observation data records and the area which was designed with monotonous color with relatively large size was also involved here so that it was identified that the simply treated area in design was rarely gazed.

  • It has been known that RA, one of major constituents of Perilla frutescens which has been used as a traditional folk remedy for sedation in oriental countries, shows the anxiolytic-like and sedative effects. This study was performed to know whether RA may enhance pentobarbital-induced sleep through ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid $(GABA)_A-ergic$ systems in rodents. RA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced the locomotor activity in mice. RA decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time in pentobarbital (42 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced sleeping mice. RA also increased sleeping time and number of falling sleep mice after treatment with sub-hypnotic pentobarbital (28 mg/kg, i.p.). In electroencephalogram (EEG) recording, RA (2.0 mg/kg) not only decreased the counts of sleep/wake cycles and REM sleep, but also increased the total and NREM sleep in rats. The power density of NREM sleep showed the increase in ${\delta}-waves$ and the decrease in ${\alpha}-waves$. On the other hand, RA (0.1, 1.0 and $10{\mu}g/ml$) increased intracellular $Cl^-$ influx in the primary cultured hypothalamic cells of rats. RA (p.o.) increased the protein expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase ($GAD_{65/67}$) and $GABA_A$ receptors subunits except ${\beta}1$ subunit. In conclusion, RA augmented pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through $GABA_A-ergic$ transmission. Thus, it is suggested that RA may be useful for the treatment of insomnia.

  • Luteolin, a widespread flavonoid, has been known to have neuroprotective activity against various neurologic diseases such as epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease. However, little information is available regarding the hypnotic effect of luteolin. In this study, we evaluated the hypnotic effect of luteolin and its underlying mechanism. In pentobarbital-induced sleeping mice model, luteolin (1, and 3 mg/kg, p.o.) decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time. Through electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) recording, we demonstrated that luteolin increased non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time and decreased wake time. To evaluate the underlying mechanism, we examined the effects of various pharmacological antagonists on the hypnotic effect of luteolin. The hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was not affected by flumazenil, a GABAA receptorbenzodiazepine (GABAAR-BDZ) binding site antagonist, and bicuculine, a GABAAR-GABA binding site antagonist. On the other hand, the hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was almost completely blocked by caffeine, an antagonist for both adenosine A1 and A2A receptor (A1R and A2AR), 8-Cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX), an A1R antagonist, and SCH-58261, an A2AR antagonist. From the binding affinity assay, we have found that luteolin significantly binds to not only A1R but also A2AR with $IC_{50}$ of 1.19, $0.84{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. However, luteolin did not bind to either BDZ-receptor or GABAAR. From these results, it has been suggested that luteolin has hypnotic efficacy through A1R and A2AR binding.

  • Purpose: As laptop use increases throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and its use outside of traditional workstations proliferates, it is imperative to expand the limited research available regarding ergonomic exposure. This study aimed to identify the effects of a laptop supporter on biomechanical characteristics in the wrist joint muscles of healthy young adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study design with thirty-four healthy young adults as participants. They conducted a typing exercise performed under two different conditions, which were with and without a notebook computer supporter. This study measured the biomechanical characteristics of the muscles of the wrist joints including the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), the flexor carpi radialis (FCR), the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL), and the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU). Measurements were taken three times: before typing, immediately after typing for 30 minutes with a supporter, and immediately after typing for 30 minutes without a supporter. The statistical method to compare the three different measurement conditions was the repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The participants showed significantly different levels of dynamic stiffness in both the FCU before typing and immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter, and showed significantly different levels of dynamic stiffness in the FCR before typing and immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter. The dynamic stiffness level immediately after 30 minutes of typing without a supporter was significantly different than that immediately after 30 minutes of typing with a supporter. However, the muscle tone was not significantly different among the three different conditions. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that a laptop supporter used to correct the eye level of the electronic screen increases the dynamic stiffness of the wrist joint flexors, so it is necessary to consider the neutral position of the wrist joint during typing.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify whether the concept of time conveys meanings similar to nonverbal communicative elements in foreign language education. This study surveys cultural traits of time from the French cultural education perspective. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall points out that each cultural community has developed a different perception of time and experience, and that time conveys the meaningful message nonverbally similar to the nonverbal elements such as space, gesture, eye movement, and facial expression. I investigated the time experiences of a drinking party in France and in Korea, from a cultural relativistic point of view. The subject of a drinking party was chosen on the ground that a drinking party is highly related to most people's daily lives and it also indicates how they have a relationship with others. I sought a new direction in foreign language cultural education by analyzing how cultural differences between the two communities, especially the relationships between individuals and organisations, ways to separate leisure and labor, and the nonverbal elements, are presented in the two drinking parties.

  • Sea urchins are hugely destructive of marine forest ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the behavioral response of purple sea Urchins Heliocodaris crassispina to food and an electrical stimulus and to investigate the attraction radius of these stimuli, with an eye to the development of technology for controlling sea urchin numbers. Ten purple sea urchins, housed in circular acrylic tank, were tested against various attractant stimuli. In addition, an experiment was conducted with 200 purple sea urchins in a large water tank to observe movement patterns and the attractiveness of various stimuli. In the smaller experiment, eight out of 10 sea urchins were attracted to food, and these attractive effects were maintained in all except one of the affected urchins. However, the attractant effects of the electrical stimulus were maintained in only three sea urchins. The results of the larger experiment indicated that differences in the attractant power of food and an electrical stimulus were 54%-78%, and approximately 5-15% of sea urchins were attracted by the electrical stimulus.

  • The importance of protecting personal information is getting attention more than ever. However, the package delivery system has yet to keep up with the privacy movement. The waybill attached to the package contains personal information about the recipient in text form, which is exposed to anyone with visible eyesight. In order to remedy the problem, this paper proposes that the contents of the waybill should be replaced by QR code instead of plain text which can be read and accessed through the human eye. In addition, in order to prevent indiscriminate access to the contents of the QR code, the access is only permitted using smart glasses registered in the delivery blockchain network system. Lastly, to prevent leaking the contents of the QR code from the person who has access to the registered smart glasses, an inside job, the access record is recorded on the blockchain.
