  • Distribution of drifting larvae of Anadara broughtnoii SCHRENCK was studied based on the planktonic sampling which has been collected in fifteen sampling areas of southern coast of Korea and Ulsan Bay during summer season from 1973 to 1977. Vertical and horizontal occurrence was analyzed related to the environmental factors such as surface water temperature, current velocity and depth of water column. High density of the larvae was observed in the Chinhae Bay which included the sampling areas Rampo, Sockcheon, Majeon, Changpo, Dangdong, Bedun, Changchoa, and Wonmun. Maximum occurrence of the farvae was accompanied with the highest water temperature of the summer season, and it was usually August when the water temperature was over 27$^{\circ}C$. In August, 1975, the highest density of the farvae was observed, when the mean surface water temperature was the highest compared to those of other years. The first appearence of the drifting larvae was also related to the surface water temperature. Each year the larae begin to appear from the late July and the ready-to-fall larvae appear in abundance from the mid-August. Vertical distribution patterns of the larvae are closely related to the depth of the water column as well as to the current velocity. In shallow water the larvae tend to aggregate in the bottom layer, while they are diffused to some extent in deep water. In shallow water column ( 8m) more or less 75% of the total larvae individuals was observed in the lower 4m layer and in deep water column ( 16m) only 45% of those was found in the lower 4m layer. In the water of lower velocity a large fraction of the larvae population is distributed in the lower depth layer.

  • Predater, tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) has a specific preferring preys in natural environments. To investigate this, young tarpon were captured and their stomach contents were weighed and sorted based on taxonomic groups. Average standard length and body weight for tarpon captured were 11.49 cm and 34.67 g, respectively. The average weight of the stomach contents in the tarpon was 0.83 g. The status of digestion extent of the consumed preys was 2.37 which indicated that preys were relatively well digested. The main preys in tarpon stomach were other fishes (mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow) and shrimp. Frequency occurrence of fishes in tarpon stomach was highest (P<0.05). Also, frequency occurrence of shrimp was higher than that of fly (P<0.05). Mean individual number of fish found in tarpon stomach was 2.66 per tarpon and it was higher than that of shrimp or fly (P<0.05). There was linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and the standard length of tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.3151 $\times$ (Standard length of tarpon) - 2.7123, $R^2$=0.6140. Also, there was the strong linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and weight of the tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.0299 $\times$ (Body weight of tarpon) - 0.0774, $R^2$=0.7882. These results indicated that the main preys for young tarpon in their natural environments were small fish composed of mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow and shrimp. And there was the stronger correlation between the total weight of preys and the body weight of tarpon than that between the total weight of preys and the standard length of tarpon.

  • Dust scattering is one of the major problem for the residents living nearby construction field with construction noise and vibration. The dust scattering may inflict a considerable damage to psychological, spiritual discomfort to neighboring peoples. Therefore, the trouble of residents living nearby construction field have been increasing. Nevertheless, in our country, adequate guidelines for the dust scattering are not yet established because of the lack of basic data and insufficient research works. In this point, this study has researched its level of damage by conducting of the interview-survey which utilizing of questionnaire-paper asking for those staffs and workers to answer in the construction field, in order to grasp the damage extent of the actual condition effect and response against scattering dust in construction field. As the result, the occurring rate of dust scattering was appeared high compare with other constructing processes, due to utilization of construction equipment that operating at the fundamental basic construction stage, and it was turned out that presently the proper countermeasure and training against scattering dust in the construction site is insufficient. As for the solution mean against that, it is considered that with the better operation of construction site such as the installation of facilities for occurrence-restraint of dust scattering, frequent sprinkling of water, use of thermostat-covers, as well as those methods to be minimized of the occurrence of dust scattering must be contrived through the education for an attention how to use of construction equipment and training at the site.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the solution of occupant problems related to the house purchasing. For the purpose, the content of problems and actual conditions of house purchasing are examined. Also the structural analysis of occupant's evaluation of housing purchasing is executed. For these purposes, a survey was conducted using questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted from 263 house owners in Seoul. Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows ; 1) The frequency and the contend of occupation's problems with house purchasing are studied. The rate of housing problem occurrence is 71.2%, so the majority of respondents experience problems. The most common problems are the difference from supplier's description(53.2%). The rate of housing problems occurrence is qenerally high with the houses of mult-housedhold houses and mult-family houses type. 2) There is a significant difference in housing satisfaction extend according to the existence of an housing problem experience. Therefore, it can be inferred that experience of housing problem has an important effects upon the housing satasfaction extent. 3) Occupants' countermoves to the housing problems are examined. Occupants make active regotiation with house suppliers only on the direct damages such as an economical loss or a living difficulty. However, they usually make no countermove at all on the other indirect troubles. House suppliers make correction only when occupants' countermove actively, but refuse to do when occupant's reactions are not active. 4) As a means of countermove, most occupants depend on direct personal regotiation with house suppliers. The rate of using a specialist or public and private consultant is extremely low. 5) Problems with house purchasing and the countermove process of both occupant and house supplier are displayed in the figure(Fig. 4-4).

  • Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) are caused by the rapid proliferation of cyanobacteria and are believed to be exacerbated by climate change. However, the extent to which HCBs will be stimulated in the future due to increased temperature remains uncertain. This study aims to predict the future occurrence of cyanobacteria in the Nakdong River, which has the highest incidence of HCBs in South Korea, based on temperature rise scenarios. Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) were used as the basis for these scenarios. Data-driven model simulations were conducted, and out of the four machine learning techniques tested (multiple linear regression, support vector regressor, decision tree, and random forest), the random forest model was selected for its relatively high prediction accuracy. The random forest model was used to predict the occurrence of cyanobacteria. The results of boxplot and time-series analyses showed that under the worst-case scenario (RCP8.5 (2100)), where temperature increases significantly, cyanobacterial abundance across all study areas was greatly stimulated. The study also found that the frequencies of HCB occurrences exceeding certain thresholds (100,000 and 1,000,000 cells/mL) increased under both the best-case scenario (RCP2.6 (2050)) and worst-case scenario (RCP8.5 (2100)). These findings suggest that the frequency of HCB occurrences surpassing a certain threshold level can serve as a useful diagnostic indicator of vulnerability to temperature increases caused by climate change. Additionally, this study highlights that water bodies currently susceptible to HCBs are likely to become even more vulnerable with climate change compared to those that are currently less susceptible.

  • Rice bran application just after transplanting has been increasingly practiced as an herbicide-substitute for organic rice production in Korea. However, this practice is frequently reported to be unsatisfactory in weed suppression. An experiment with five treatments that combines flooding depth, rice bran application dose, and herbicide treatment was done in the paddy field to evaluate whether rice bran application under deep flooding can lead to a successful weed control in compensation for the single practice of rice bran application. Rice bran was broadcasted on the flood water surface just after deep flooding of 8 to 10cm that was started at seven days after transplanting. In the shallow flooding plot without herbicide six weed species were recorded: Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludvigia prostrate, Cyperus amuricus, Aneima keisak, and Bidens tripartite. Among the first four dominant weed species, deep flooding significantly suppressed the occurrence of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus while did not suppress the occurrence of Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate. On the contrary, rice bran application under deep flooding suppressed significantly Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate while didn't exert an additional suppression of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus compared to deep flooding alone. Rice bran application and deep flooding suppressed complimentarily all the six weed species to a satisfactory extent except for Monochoria vaginalis of which suppression efficacy was 31.9%. Deep flooding reduced the panicle number substantially by inhibiting the tiller production, increased the spikelet number per panicle slightly, and leaded to a lower rice grain yield compared to shallow flooding with herbicide. Rice bran application under deep flooding mitigated the panicle reduction due to deep flooding, increased the spikelets per panicle significantly, and thus produced even higher grain yield in the rice bran application of 2000kg $ha^{-1}$ as compared to the shallow flooding treatment with herbicide. In conclusion, this practice applying rice bran under deep flooding would be promising to be incorporated as an integral practice for an organic rice farming system.

  • This study implemented a comparison of SPI characteristics in terms of quantitative and spatial analysis depending on four RCP scenarios. For this purpose, we compared quantitative characteristics of drought using standard precipitation index resulted from daily precipitation data reflecting future green gas concentration scenarios, and spatial distribution field of seasonal drought occurrence frequency and its duration, was analyzed to compare drought trends depending on the RCP scenarios. As a result, we found that SPI time series was quite different from each other and correlation coefficients were lower than 0.08. Depending on the RCP scenarios, spatial distribution results showed different trends in drought severity, frequency, and duration. The biggest reason of the difference is daily precipitation data based on the different greenhouse gas concentrations, but we could not find the effect of the concentration extent on drought occurrence projection. In addition, according to the results from this study, drought analysis results using single RCP scenario may have considerable uncertainty.

  • BACKGROUND: The fruit quality and flowering characteristics of Kiwifruit (A. deliciosa cv. Hayward) in the following year is known to be affected by the extent and timing of defoliation of the current year. In korea, the production of kiwi, which is a perennial, straggling deciduous warm-temperate fruit, is often restricted by wind damage due to typhoons resulting to defoliation at the middle season of its growing period. In this paper, we report the effect of the different timing of defoliation and severities at the current season to the kiwifruit quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty seven-year-old 'Hayward' trees grown under polyethylene film rain-shelter were defoliated in different days from August to September at seven day-intervals. In each day, 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of leaves were removed from the trees. Fruits from each treatment were classified into four floating types (L: lying in bottom, S: standing on bottom, F: floating and SF: floating at the surface of water) by submerging them into tap water. Defoliation of kiwifruit trees in August and September caused air holes in locules of inner pericarp. Increased number of air hole in locules of a fruit was observed in floating types F and SF, and most of the air holes were located in stem end. The defoliation of trees in August significantly reduced the ratio of L-floating type fruits, which have the least number of locule air holes. The extent of defoliation also affected the distribution of the four types, the more leaves removed, the less L-floating type fruits harvested. The weight of fruits from trees defoliated in August was lower than that of fruits from September. Soluble solids content decreased as the number of locule air holes increased. Negative correlations were observed between the extent of defoliation and the weight and soluble solids content of fruits. CONCLUSION: Early defoliation effect on kiwifruit locule air hole occurrence and fruit quality were more severe in August than in September. And also if the defoliation severity is over 25%, severe fruit quality reduction expected to happen due to increase of fruit locule air hole in the inner pericarp.
