  • In this study the validities of runoff prediction methods are reviewed around ESP (Ensemble Streamflow Prediction) techniques. The improvements of runoff predictions on Yongdam river basin are evaluated by the comparison of different prediction methods including ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks provided by meteorological agency as well as the runoff forecasting based on the analysis of the historical rainfall scenarios. As a result it is assessed that runoff predictions with ESP may give rise to more accurate results than the ordinary historical average runoffs. In deed the latter gave the mean of yearly absolute error as to be 60.86 MCM while the errors of the former ones amounted to 44.12 MCM (ESP) and 42.83 MCM (ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks) respectively. In addition it is confirmed that ESP incorporated with qualitative meteorological outlooks could improve the accuracy of the results more and more. Especially the degree of improvement of ESP with meteorological outlooks shows rising by 10.8% in flood season and 8% in drought season. Therefore the methods of runoff predictions with ESP can be further used as the basic forecasting information tool for the purpose of the effective watershed management.

  • As the vehicle becomes bigger and faster, the importance of vehicle stability in an extreme driving condition caused by sudden steering, road condition or unexpected case has been emphasized. The ESP system is being utilized to improve the handling performance and the vehicle stability. In this study, we implemented various tests and proposed estimation methods for ESP characteristics in extreme driving situations. The estimation methods for ESP proposed in this paper are expected to facilitate developing the control logic and improving the performance of the ESP system.

  • Recentely, a compact and small size air-cleaning Electrostatic Precipitator(ESP) is needed to develop for air conditioning devices. From Deutsch formula for ESP efficiency, collection efficiency is affected not only the structure of collection section but also the charge rate of dust. In terms of collection area, the most useful type is a scroll type ESP. In this work, we investigated experimentally aptimum design factor of scroll type ESP by application of Taguchi method. And we developed the scroll type ESP by using optimal condition of control factor.

  • Recently, there are widely needs of small scale electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in machine shop and other factories. Since the space of such factories is limited, the improvement of collection efficiency is predominant subject. In this study, we examine the influence of distribution of wind velocity and oil mist concentration inside the ESP in order to improve the performance of the ESP. The distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration is measured respectively in a cross-sectional plane of the ESP. The former is controlled by using a louver which is placed in front of an ionizer and the latter is controlled by lengthening the pipe of entrance of the ESP in order to have plenty of time that mist is dispersed evenly. It is shown that the uniformity of distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration inside the ESP can be getting by adopting a louver with proper shape and lengthening the pipe of entrance and is also contributed to collection efficiency considerably.

  • Since pulse energization can improve the performance of Electrostatic Precipitator(ESP) for high resistivity dusts, high voltage micro-pulse generators, 70kV 140usec duration pulses for instance, are commonly developed by LC resonance for most pulse powered ESPs. Consisting of discharge electrodes and collecting electrodes, ESP has its own capacitance like a capacitor. ESP's capacitance affects the LC resonance phenomenon with resonance inductor and capacitor of micro-pulse power supply, engineers should acquire the value of their ESP to design for proper power supply design. In this study, we describe the ESP's capacitance measuring device which has the same topology with our new developed micro-pulse power supply. In this microcontroller based capacitance measuring equipment, ESP's capacitance can be calculated easily through ...

  • It is well known that the cysteine proteases in excretory-secretory product (ESP) of Paragonimus westermani newly excysted metacercariae (PwNEM) are capable of degrading IgG in vitro. Recent evidence suggests that the IgG-coated surface, such as found on parasites, is one of the most effective physiologic stimuli for granulocyte activation. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effect of excretory-secretory product (ESP) of PwNEM on superoxide production of granulocytes stimulated with IgG The 96-well plates were coated with human IgG (0, 10, 30, $100{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$) in the absence or presence of ESP. When granulocytes were incubated in the wells coated with human IgG in the presence of ESP, the level of superoxide production of granulocytes was reduced to about 90% when compared to the cells incubated in the wells coated with IgG alone. This inhibitory effect of the ESP on IgG-induced superoxide production of granulocytes was concentration-dependent. These results suggest that ESP secreted by PwNEM may be important in the control of effector functions of granulocytes stimulated with IgG in human paragonimiasis.

  • The Electronic Stability Program (ESP), a system that improves vehicle safety, also known as YMC (Yaw Motion Controller) or VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control), is a system that operates in unstable or sudden driving and braking situations. Developing conditions such as unstable or sudden driving and braking situations in a vehicle are very dangerous unless you are an experienced professional driver. Additionally, many repetitive tests are required to collect reliable data, and there are many variables to consider such as changes in the weather, road surface, and tire condition. To overcome this problem, in this paper, hardware and control software such as the ESP controller, vehicle engine, ABS, and TCS module, composed of three control zones, are modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK, and the vehicle, climate, and road surface. Various environmental variables such as the driving course were modeled and studied for the real-time ESP real-time simulator that can be repeatedly tested under the same conditions.

  • Excretory/secretory proteins (ESP) from Toxoplasma gondii were analyzed to define the function in the penetration process into host cells. Whole ESP obtained at 37$^{\circ}C$ were composed of 15 bands with molecular mass of 110, 97, 86, 80, 70, 60, 54, 42, 40, 36. 30, 28, 26, 22, and 19 kDa. Five ESP of 86, 80, 42, 36, and 28 kDa were reacted with monoclonal antibodies (mAb). named as Tg386 (microheme), Tg485 (surface membrane), Tg786 (rhoptry), Tg378, and Tg556 (both dense granules), respectively. The ESP was released by a temperature-dependent/-independent manner and all at once whenever ready to pour out except Tg786. Each ESP was not exhausted within the parasite but the amount was limited. Tg786 was released continuously with increment, whereas Tg378 and Tg556 were ceased to release after 3 and 4 hr, Dense granular Tg378 and Tg556 were released spontaneously and constitutively before the entry into host cells also. The entry of T. gondii was inhibited by all the mAbs differentially. And the parasite deprived of ESP was inhibited to enter exponentially up to 90.1%. It is suggested that ESP play an essential function to provide appropriate environment for the entry of the parasite into host cells.

  • This paper presents a comparative study on the effectiveness of teaching an engineering course using English with Specific Purpose(ESP). A study was performed using student groups; one class using ESP, and one class conducted in English with an English text. The course conducted using ESP showed the greatest improvement in English writing and conversation, and the students reported a greatly increased confidence in their ability to function professionally using English. A self-assessment of each student was conducted before and after the courses. Prior to the course less than 10% in each group felt that they are able to: a) understand a textbook, b) write an email, c) generate a project report, or d) follow a lecture given in English. The survey at the end of the course showed that the ESP teaching style resulted in significant improvements in students ability and confidence with writing and speaking in English, whereas reading skills were similar for both groups. This is due to the ESP method, in which students are required to give presentations and keep journals in English. After a brief review of the ESP principles and a discussion of how they were implemented, the background data of the participants(students) are described. Finally, the end-of-semester survey highlights the efficacy of the ESP approach.

  • The adipocyte-derived hormone leptin regulates appetite and bone mass. Recent research demonstrates that reciprocally, osteoblasts have a role in controlling energy metabolism. Several genes expressed in osteoblasts are involved in this process, and one of them is the Esp gene. The remaining genes regulate Esp gene expression. OST-PTP, the protein name of Esp, regulates the carboxylation of osteocalcin secreted from osteoblasts, thus affecting insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion. This review provides evidence for a novel interpretation of the connection between bone and energy metabolism and expands our understanding of the novel physiology of bone beyond its classical functions.
