A Case of Field Application of EPS Blocks and Its Performance (EPS블럭의 현장적용에 따른 하부지반의 거동 연구)

  • The use of EPS application to construction field was introduced in this country very recently. Nevertheless, approximately a total of 210,000m3 of EPS application was conducted in less than four years. Main app.lication areas for the EPS method are : (1)backfill behind a bridge abutment constructed on soft clay soil, (2)embankment constructed on soft clay soil, and (3)backfill of gravity wall. Among these, about 70oA of EPS are used for (1) and (2) deb cribed above. In this study, an invesitgation was held for the application of the EPS method to backfill of a bridge abutment which was constructed on soft clay soil. Several instruments were installed around the construction site to invesitgate the behavior of the system. Then a Finite Element Analysis was conducted for comparison.

  • Application of structural load on soft ground can cause lateral movement as well as ground break due to pressing and shearing of ground. Especially, abutment supported by pile foundation can make pile deformed due to lateral movement of ground in order to have harmful effect on structure. According to the result of this study, it is required to consider disturbance of weak soil layer when using lateral movement countermeasure method by EPS construction method as a result of performing study on safety review and EPS construction method with respect to this based on site where lateral movement occurs due to backside soil filling load at bridge abutment installed on weak ground, and it is required to sufficiently consider soil reduction during design of EPS construction method due to lateral movement deformation of soft clay layer by losing ground horizontal resistance force due to plasticity of ground around pile as well as combination part damage with pile head and expansion foundation.

A Case Study of Stability of Bridge Abutment Using the Light Banking Material(EPS) (경량성토재(EPS)를 이용한 교량 교대의 안정성 검토)

  • The EPS construction method-one kind of the load reducing methods-utilizes the EPS blocks, ultra-light materials whose unit weight is about 1/100 of soils and has been applied to many soft ground sites. It needed 3,000 days to get the 90% degree of the consolidation for the case of 12m high soil embankments on the 30m thick soft clayey foundations. The N value of SPT at this deposit was less than 5. The pack drain was installed to promote the radial consolidations. Although staged embankments were planned, designers failed to get a sufficient stability of the foundation ground. Therefore, the EPS fill method was selected to reduce the load and the construction period. EPS blocks(D-20 model) replaced the upper part of the soil embankments. These complex embankments reduced the ground settlement and the construction period. The possibility of lateral movements of the bridge abutments was checked and the design scheme was reviewed.

  • 주로 탄화수소화합물로 구성된 EPS(Expended poly styrene)는 뛰어난 단열성능, 경제성, 건식공법의 시공편리성으로 단열재로 많이 사용되지만 화재에 취약한 단점이 있다. 최근 EPS패널의 다양한 난연화를 통해 난연EPS패널제품이 개발되고 있고 시장에서의 사용이 증가되고 있다. 그러나 가짜 난연EPS제품의 사용이 사회적 문제가 되고 있는 것도 현실이다. 본 연구에서는 난연EPS와 일반EPS가 성분이 다른점을 이용하여, 현장에서 시공되고 있는 시료의 진위여부 판단을 위해 X-선형광분석기(XRF)를 사용한 원소분석을 시도하였다. 분석결과 매우 간단한 방법으로 시료의 진위여부를 확인할 수 있었으며, 따라서 현장에서 사용될 수 있는 분석법으로 적용가능성에 대하여 고찰하였다.

To strength the national competition, many agents who concerned do their best for finishing that construction early as soon as possible. In generally, soil embankment on soft foundation is caused to reduce the stability by making the settlement of ground surface due to the over load. Thus, we try to make it stable by building EPS embankment construction which in our working place is one kind of the method of light embankment construction after excavating the original ground.

  • EPS provides a superb self-sufficient stability. Studies on the process of EPS construction method focus on the inchoate phase of general construction, which is increasingly applied to construction sites throughout the world. Unfortunately, there has been little study on the durability and long-term soil behavior involving EPS materials. In this study, the boring, in-site and laboratory tests were conducted to examine the long-term soil behavior in the back-filling of alternating behind the side to which EPS was applied. And results of finite element analysis considering various test results and the soil behavior data measured during the construction show that EPS construction method is a superb process that relieves the load and consequently reduces the settlement, alleviates the stress on the abutment, and prevents lateral flow.

  • Researches on the induced trench method using compressible materials such as clay, mud, straw, or EPS block have been performed to reduce the load acting on buried conduits under a high fill. The induced trench method has the problems that the arching area due to the compressible arching material is one dimensional or localized in a narrow zone. The main purpose of this study is to solve the problems of the induced trench method mentioned above. The various types of laboratory model tests are conducted to find the effects of the variations of EPS block width, multilayer application, soil density, and diameter of the flexible steel pipe. A series of model tests was conducted to evaluate the reduction of earth pressure on conduits using EPS block. Based on modeling test it is found that the magnitude of vertical earth pressure on conduits was reduced about 60% compared with conventional flexible conduit systems.
