  • Purpose: To investigate the difference of fractional anisotropy (FA) values between 6- and 25-direction diffusion tensor images (DTI) in normal adult brain. Materials and Methods: DTI was peformed in 28 normal subjects (15 subjects with 6-direction, 13 subjects with 25-direction) in a 1.5 T MR system. DTI was done with SE-EPI sequence with TR/TE/NEX 10000/84/1, 5mm slice thickness and b=1000 s/mm2. FA values were measured from 8 different anatomical locations which included both cerebral peduncles, both posterior limbs of the internal capsules, both corona radiata, genu and splenium of the corpus callosum. Statistical difference of FA was tested between 6-and 25-direction DTI.

  • Three different deconvolution techniques for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF) from whole brain $T2^{\ast}-weighted$ bolus tracking images were implemented (parametric Fourier transform P-FT, parametric single value decomposition P-SVD and nonparametric single value decomposition NP-SVD). The techniques were tested on 206 regions from 38 hyperacute stroke patients. In the P-FT and P-SVD techniques, the tissue and arterial concentration time curves were fit to a gamma variate function and the resulting CBF values correlated very well $(CBF_{P-FT}\;=\;1.02{\cdot}CBF_{p-SVD},\;r^2\;=\;0.96)$. The NP-SVD CBF values correlated well with the P-FT CBF values only when a sufficient number of time series volumes were acquired to minimize tracer time curve truncation $(CBF_{P-FT}\;=\;0.92{\cdot}CBF_{NP-SVD},\;r^2\;=\;0.88)$. The correlation between the fitted CBV and the unfitted CBV values was also maximized in regions with minimal tracer time curve truncation $(CBV_{fit}\;=\;1.00{\cdot}CBV_{ Unfit},\;^r^2\;=\;0.89)$. When a sufficient number of time series volumes could not be acquired (due to scanner limitations) to avoid tracer time curve truncation, the P-FT and P-SVD techniques gave more reliable estimates of CBF than the NP-SVD technique.

  • We have investigated the photoreflectance characteristics for In\ulcornerGaAs/GaAs heterojunction structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The E\ulcorner bandgap energy of In\ulcornerGa\ulcornerAs at room temperature was observed at about 1.3 eV. From this result, the indium composition x value was calculated. The shoulder peaks were observed higher than E\ulcorner peaks, and peak positions were shifted toward 12 meV to 70 meV higher energy with increasing doping concentrations. The shoulder peaks can be observed by In segregation and re-evaporation. However, we think that indium re-evaporation cause th shift of shoulder peaks after epilayer growth.

  • In this paper, the AC breakdown properties to investigate the electrical properties of gate oxide layer in MOSFET was studied. 5 inch arsenic epi-wafer is selected as an experimental specimen, the power MOSFET of a general MOS structure was made. In order to analyze the physical properties of the specimen, the SIMS(secondary ion mass spectroscopy) was used. As the experimental condition, the experiment al of the AC breakdown characteristics was performed when the thickness of gate oxide layer is $600[\AA]$ and $800[\AA]$, the resistivity is $1.2[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$, $1.5[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ and $1.8[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$, and the diffusion time is 110[min] and 150[min] in temperature $30[^{\circ}C]{\sim}100[^{\circ}C]$. From the analysis result of the SIMS spectrum, it is confirmed that the dielectric strength is decreased by contribution of the impurities ad dition as increasing in thickness of the gate oxide layer in MOSFET.

  • Acoustic or sound noise due to gradient pulsing has been one of the problems in MRI, both in patient scanning as well as in many areas of psychiatric and neuroscience research, such as unctional MRI (fMRI). Our recent observations in MRI or the visual and motor cortex show very different results with sound noise in comparison with the results obtained without sound noise. Although a number of ideas has been suggested in the literature about the possible elimination or reduction of sound noise, progress has been slow due to the basic role of gradient pulsing in MR imaging. Therefore, we report on some typical behavior of sound noise observed from MRI scanners and the analyses of their characteristics. Data are obtained both from a commercial MRI scanner (GE Signa 1.5-T EPI system).

  • Purpose To investigate the difference of total activation in visual area, motor area, and cerebellum according to the stimulation paradigm. Materials and Methods Functional MR imaging was performed in 5 healthy volunteers with visual and motor activity using EPI technique. LED and Checker-Board stimulation were performed for visual activity. Thumb motion and Finger tapping were performed for motor and cerebellum activity. Time course data was obtained by calculating the total activation which was defined as the number of activated pixels x averaged pixel intensity. Results In the case of visual activity with LED stimulation, we found increased total activity of more than 100% compared with Checker-Board stimulation. In the case of motor area and cerebellum with Finger tapping stimulation, we found increased total activity of more than 100% and 150%, respectively compared with Thumb motion stimulation.

  • This study compares two different methods of measuring brain-BOLD activation. By comparing two different methods of measurement i.e., one method calculating the neural activation area (the number of activated voxels), while the other measured the neural activation intensity (the mean intensity of selected activated yokels), this study identified the more precise method of measuring brain activation which results from the completion of a visuospatial task. 16 right-handed male college students (mean age 23.2 years) participated in this study as subjects. Functional brain images were scanned on them using a 3T MRI single-shot EPI method. No correlation was found between the levels of cognitive performance and number of activated yokels in the activated brain areas. However, a significant correlation was found between the levels of cognitive performance and the mean intensity of selected activated yokels in the parietal, frontal, and other areas. In conclusion, the method of mean intensity was considered a better index of brain activity rather than the activated yokels measurement method.

  • Chemical investigation on a colonial marine tunicate, Didemnum sp. led to the isolation of a series of indole alkaloids including a new (1) and two known metabolites (2-3). Based on the spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR along with MS spectra, the structure of 1 (16-epi-18-acetyl herdmanine D) was elucidated as a new amino acid derivative. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by comparison of specific rotation with the known compound. The structures of compounds 2 and 3 were also identified as bromoindole containing compounds N-(6-bromo-1H-indole-3-carbonyl)-L-arginine and (6-bromo-^1H-indol-3-yl) oxoacetamide, respectively, based on $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR data, MS data and specific rotation value. Their pharmacological potentials as antibacterial agents and FXR antagonists were investigated, but no significant activity was found. However, the structural similarity of compound 1 to compound 4 suggested the anti-inflammatory potential of compound 1.

  • J-shaped superluminescent diodes (SLD) utilizing trench structure have been fabricated on the multiple quantum dots epi-structure with its ground state energy wavelength of $1.3\;{\mu}m$. It was observed that optical power was drastically increased up to 20 times in comparison with that of SLD without trench structure, The electroluminescence characteristics showed that the peak intensity of excited state was several ten times higher in the SLD with trench than without trench structure. It is explained that the optical power enhancement of J-shaped SLD with trench structure resulted from the drastic increase of peak intensity of excited state.

  • Experimental study was conducted to characterize the flow effect of particle migration in a microchannel which can be used to deliver small amount of liquids, drugs, biological agents and particles in microfluidic devices. Fluorescent particles of $1\{mu}m$ diameter were used to obtain velocity profiles of the fluid in which large particles of $10\{mu}m$ diameter were suspended at different volume fraction of 0.6 and $0.8\%$. Measurements were obtained by using micro-PIV system which contains a Nd:YAG laser with a light of 532-nm wavelength, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope and a cooled CCD camera to record particle images. The volume fraction of $\phi$ and the particle Reynolds number $Re_p$Rep were used as a parameter to assess the influence of the velocity profile of the suspensions. To expect the slip velocity between the particle and fluids, experiments were carried out at low volume fraction. It was shown that the velocity profile was not influenced by Rep but influenced by the volume fraction, which is in similar trend with the previous study.
