  • Purpose: Open-air dumping is a significant problem in Gilgit City, with limited research analyzing waste generation and its physicochemical impact on the soil. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of open dumping on soil properties and compare them with a controlled site. Research Design, data, and Methodology: Using ANOVA, the study found significant differences in electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), sand, silt, and clay between the two sites, except for pH. Pearson correlation revealed that pH negatively correlated with EC, sand, and silt, but positively with SOM, SOC, and clay. The control site's mean EC was 6.06 mS/m, whereas the dumping site recorded 8.5 mS/m. EC is inversely related to SOM, SOC, silt, and clay, but directly to sand. SOC and SOM values varied significantly, with notable differences in soil texture components like clay and silt. Results: The research highlights the detrimental effects of unsystematic waste dumping on soil health and its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, which exacerbates climate change. Conclusion: The study concluded that waste deposition and decomposition significantly impact EC, SOM, SOC, and soil texture, though pH remains unchanged. The unsystematic dumping of solid waste contributes to climate change through methane production, a potent greenhouse gas. To mitigate these impacts, the study recommends regular monitoring, waste prevention, recycling strategies, and continuous training for stakeholders to achieve sustainable development.

  • Land-surface and soil processes significantly affect mesoscale local weather systems as well as global/regional climate. In this study, characteristics of land-surface models (LSMs) and soil models (SMs) that are frequently coupled into mesoscale meteorological models are investigated. In addition, detailed analyses on three LSMs, employed by the PSU/NCAR MM5, are provided. Some impacts of LSMs on heavy rainfall prediction are also discussed.

  • Pits and mounds created by windthrow have significant impacts on forest ecosystem. In order to establish initial data base, 80 pits and mounds were sampled and surveyed in 5 fir forests in Nae-Sorak Mountain. Characteristics and forms were surveyed and frequency of tree species appearance were surveyed as well. 4.9% of surveyed area (0.4 ha) was pits and mounds in El and E2 areas except old areas where survey was done by estimation. E3 area showed the highest proportion, 11.7% of 0.1 ha of sampling area.

  • Engineered nanoparticles exhibit a variety of unique and tunable chemical and physical properties. These unique properties make the nanoparticles central components and widespread potential applications in nanoindustry. However, the potential toxicities of nanoparticles have not been fully evaluated. Recently, the impacts of nanoparticles to human and environment became the emerging issue of toxicology. In this article, physicochemical properties and toxicities of carbon nanotube, fullerene, quantum dots, and other types of nanomaterials were reviewed and the strategy of risk assessment were suggested based on the frame of chemical assessment.

  • Since establishment some 25 year ago, AMITA Corporation has continued its attempts in meeting customer needs, in reducing costs for waste treatment. The solutions we have proposed in the past made use of our networks entailing Japan as well as the East Asian region. However, as enterprises have changed their perspective approaching environmental issues recently, as needs diversify, AMITA too has been changing its strategy to incorporate the use of Information Technology to provide consulting services. AMITA has set its goals in promoting modernization of the waste treatment industry, and optimizing the recycling market to reduce environmental impacts.

  • Coal consumption in Asia is projected to increase by about 1.3 billion tons over the 1993-2010 period. The expansion in coal consumption for electricity generation is the dominant factor in the large increase in coal consumption. Without effective control measures, the projected increase in coal consumption will have a serious impact on environmental effects of increased coal use in Asia. Thus, the introduction of appropriate CCTs is considered essential to achieving the twin goals of expanded use of coal decreased environmental impacts.

  • Information on the fate of the added nutrients is essential for the assessment of the food utilization, pond fertility, water quality and processes in the sediment (Boyd, 1985). Also, they are useful for qualifying environmental impacts of aquaculture and for environmental management. The purpose of this experiment was to assess the fate of nitrogen and organic matter entering aquaculture ponds and the relative importance of the different resources. (omitted)
