The Medical Dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s Examined through "EE LIM" ("의림(醫林)"지(誌)를 통해 살펴본 1950년대 동서의학 논쟁)

  • Objective: Although the government acknowledged Korean Medical Doctors as official health care providers since 1951, criticism regarding its modernity persisted. This paper focuses on the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s risen from the problem of modernization of Korean Medicine. Method: This paper looked into the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s through "EE LIM". "EE LIM" is a scholarly journal published by Korean Medical doctor Bae Won-Sik. Articles regarding the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine were selected, categorized and analyzed. Result: The main questions against Korean Medicine were: whether it was scientific or not, and whether there was a possibility of systematization. Several opinions were brought up on these issues. 1) Some people criticized Korean Medicine as being unscientific based on modern science. 2) Others emphasized the identity of Korean Medicine against the critics. 3) Another group of people wanted to study Korean Medicine using modern methods and obtain merits from both sides. Conclusion: The different understanding of the term 'science' led to diverse discussions on the direction of Korean Medicine's progression. The narrow meaning of science only considers Korean Medicine as an object of modern scientific and medical study. But if the meaning is broadened, containing empirical aspects, Korean Medicine can be included as a category of science based on its clinical utility.

  • 본 논문은 배터리에너지저장장치(BESS)를 적용하여 전력계통의 2차 주파수조정 보조서비스를 제공하기 위한 제어 방안을 검토한다. BESS가 계통운영기관의 자동발전제어를 통한 2차 주파수조정 보조서비스에 참여하기 위해서는 제어 요구량에 대한 정확한 추종이 가능 해야하고 이를 위한 효율적인 SOC 관리가 요구된다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 2차 주파수조정 보조서비스 제어신호를 제어대상 배터리의 SOC에 따라 배분하고 SOC가 가용범위를 벗어 날 경우 SOC 회복제어를 수행하도록 제어 방안을 제안하였다.

  • 최근 백라이트용 램프를 구동하기 위해 사용하는 승압용 변압기를 압전 변압기로 도입하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 압전 변압기는 종래의 권선 변압기에서 볼 수 있었던 누설 자속과 권선등에 의한 저항 손실이 없으며, 전자유도에 의한 노이즈와 자체 손실이 없고, 권선형의 자기소자로 인한 소형화에 한계를 가지는 큰 단점을 해결해 주고 있다. 본 논문에서는 11층의 적층형 압전 변압기를 제작하고 이 제작된 적층형 압전 변압기의 전기적 특성분석을 통한 CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) 구동용 인버터의 승압용 변압기로써 응용가능성을 제시하였다.

  • In an emergency telemedicine system such as High-quality Multimedia based Real-time Emergency Telemedicine(HMRET) service, it is very important to examine the status of the patient continuously using the multimedia data including the biological signals(ECG, BP, Respiration, $SpO_2$) of the patient. In order to transmit these data real time through the communication means which have the limited transmission capacity. It is also necessary to compress the biological data besides other multimedia data. For the HMRET service, we developed the lossless biological signal compression program in MSVC++ 6.0 using DPCM method and JPEG Huffman table, and tested in an internet environment.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the characteristics of electrical conduction and photoconduction in LDPE. The electrical conduction characteristics of LDPE have been investigated at electric fields of 50 to 500 kV/cm and at temperatures of 25, $50^{\circ}C$. The photoconduction in LDPE induced by vacuum ultraviolet light irradiation have been investigated at electric fields 100, 200 kV/cm and at temperatures of 25, $50^{\circ}C$.

  • In an industrial vision system, a coding technique for binary image is essential to extract useful informations. To reduce the processing time, a hardware implementation of the chain coding algorithm is attemped. For that purpose, the chain coding algorithm is modified so that it is more suitable for a hardware implementation. A hardwired chain coder is also developed and tested with developed vision system. The result shows that the processing time is greatly reduced and that the developed vision system is maybe feasible for real-time applications.

  • In this paper, the trade-off related to bandwidth of high-speed common-mode logic frequency divider is analyzed in detail. A method to optimize the operating frequency, band-width as well as power consumption is proposed. This method is based on bipolar device characteristics, whereby a negative resistance model can be used to estimate the optimal normalized upper frequency and lower frequency of frequency dividers under different conditions, which is conventionally ignored in literatures. This method provides a simple but efficient procedure in designing high performance frequency dividers for different applications. To verify the proposed method, a static divide-by-2 at millimeter wave ranges is implemented in 180 nm SiGe technology. Measurement results of the divider demonstrate significant improvement in the figure of merit as compared with literatures.

  • 본 논문에서는 전기 자동차에 사용되는 리튬 이온 배터리 전하 균일 장치를 제안한다. 제안하는 회로는 배터리 상태 정보를 얻어오는 모니터링 IC를 셀 정보 측정뿐 아니라 전하 균일 회로 제어에도 사용한다. 이러한 구조로 인하여 전하 균일 장치의 제어 및 전하 균일을 위한 배터리 상태 측정 회로가 간단해 지며, 다수의 직렬 연결 배터리에서도 부피가 작고 가격이 저렴한 전하 균일 장치를 구현할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 88개의 리튬 이온 배터리 셀을 위한 제안하는 전하 균일 장치의 구동 방법 및 실험을 보여준다. 이 실험을 통해 제안하는 장치는 간단한 제어 방법을 통해 우수한 전하 균일 특성을 나타냄을 증명한다.

Effect of Dietary Docosahexaenoic Acid on Maze-learning Ability in Aged Mice Fed N-3 Fatty Acid Deficient Diet

  • The effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on maze-learning ability in aged mice was investigated. Aged mice fed a diet deficient in n-3 fatty acid received a semi-purified diet of 0.5, 1 and 2% DHA-ethyl ester (DHA-EE) for 4 months. Maze-learning ability was assessed at 3 months after the start of the experiment. The time required to reach the maze exit and the number of times that a mouse strayed into blind alleys in the maze were measured in 3 trials conducted at 4-day intervals. The time was significantly less in the DHA-EE 0.5% and DHA-EE 2% groups than in the control group (p<0.05). The number of times mice strayed into blind alleys in the maze was significantly lower in the DHA-EE 2% group than in the control group (p<0.05). Mice fed DHA showed increased DHA and decreased level of arachidonic acid (AA) in the brain. These results suggest that the intake of a 2% DHA diet improves learning ability in aged mice, which is associated with a higher DHA content in the brain.
