  • Pearl is the organic gemstone which does not come from mines but from the biomineralization inside mollusc. Mollusc with nacre on inner surface of the shell is inevitable to make pearl. In this paper we researched and analyzed the pearls cultured using Pen shell (Atrina pectinata) which is not used in pearl farming industry but has potential to make pearls because it has thick and beautiful nacre inside the shell. SEM analysis was conducted to reveal the pattern of nacre on the Atrina pectinata pearl. Specific characteristics as sea-water pearl are detected by further analysis with ED-XRF. Aragonite specific peaks such as $1083cm^{-1}$ and $705cm^{-1}$ were shown by Raman analysis. UV-Vis analysis of Atrina pectinata pearl showed different pattern of spectrum compared with Pinctada margaritifera pearl. The reason for this discrepancy is assumed by the metabolic difference of each species.

  • Objectives: Effectiveness and conditions of vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide (VPHP) system on decontamination of Geobacillus stearothermophilus(GS) spores, Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Enterobacteria phage felix01 (felix01) were determined. Methods: The VPHP system was designed to vaporize 35% (w/w) solution of hydrogen peroxide, continuously to inject and withdraw VPHP. The system and VHP 1000ED (Steris) were operated such that dehumidification and conditioning were initiated without samples in the chamber. Then the samples were loaded into and removed. Coupons (glass, anodizing, silicon, viton) with GS spores ($1{\times}10^6$ colony forming unit/mL [CFU/mL]), E.coli ($1{\times}10^7$ CFU/mL) and felix01 ($1{\times}10^7$ plaque forming unit/mL[PFU/mL]), and Biological Indicator (BI) with GS spores ($1{\times}10^6$ CFU/mL) on stainless steel coupons were used. The tested samples were sonicated and vortexed, and then were plated for enumeration, followed by incubation at $55^{\circ}C$, 24 hr for GS spores, and at $37^{\circ}C$, 24 hr for E.coli and felix01. BI analysis in broth culture was only qualitative. Results: The efficacy of the VPHP system on decontamination was almost equivalent to that of VHP 1000ED. The conditions for complete decontamination with the VPHP system was as follows: concentration; 700~450 ppm, relative humidity; approximately 55%, and temperature; $34{\sim}32^{\circ}C$. When comparing the decontamination efficiency among different kinds of coupons, glass was the most effective, however, all kinds of coupons were decontaminated completely after 60 min exposure in both systems. Conclusion: The VPHP system can be recommended as an alternative system for traditional system using ethylene oxide, formaldehyde or chlorine dioxide.

  • Antihypertensive effect of YH 334 was examined in various experimental hypertension rat models and the systemic and regional hymohynamic profiles of the compound were investigated in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The antiypertensive potensive potency of YH 334 is found to be more than 10 times stronger than that of nitrendipine in the all hypertensive models. The effective doses to lower the initial blood pressure by 20% $(ED_{20})$ of YH334 were 1.4 mg/kg in normotensive rats (NR), 0.7 mglkg in SHR. 0.1 mg/kg in DOCA salt hypertensive rats (DHR) and 0.4 mg/kg in renal hypertensive rats (RHR), and the $ED_{20}$ values of nitrendipine were 15.8 mg/kg in NR, 7.1 mg/kg in SHR, 1.7 mg/kg in DHR and 4.8 mg/kg in RHR. The primary hemodynamic effect hemodynamic profile is similar to that of nitrendipine. Both compounds seem to produce potent antihypertensive effects by lowering peripheral resistance in the skeletal muscles. In the organ bath study using isolated rabbit aorta, YH 334 was found to be a potent voltage dependent calcium channel blocker without significant inhibitory effect on the receptor operated calcium channels like the most of other dihydropyridine type calcium antagonists. Furthermore, YH334 showed acute diuretic and natriuretic effects in conscious SHR, which may render the unnecessary restriction of sodium in the diet of those patients on long term hypertension therapy. This effect would provide an additional benefit to its potent antihypertensive activity.

  • The field triage guidelines have been widely implemented in the Korean trauma system. This study aimed to evaluate and validate whether it is reliable to use the field triage guidelines for predicting severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and traumatic spinal injury (TSI) patients. This study retrospectively analyzed in-hospital cohort registries of all TBI and TSI patients, who visited the emergency department (ED) of the Jeju National University Hospital from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2015. The primary outcome was defined as TBI and TSI patients with an injury severity score (ISS)>15. Secondary outcomes were defined as cases in which one or more of the following conditions: in-hospital death, ISS>15, admission to the intensive care unit, emergency surgery. We enrolled 14,889 TBI and TSI patients who visited ED, of which 7,966 (53.5%) were triage positive. The overall sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve (AUC) of the full cumulative field triage guidelines step's model (Step 1+3+4 criteria) for primary outcome were 82.8%, 47.0%, and 0.646, respectively. In the results for secondary outcomes, the specificity did not show a significant difference, but the sensitivity decreased to 66.5% and AUC to 0.568. The results of this study suggest that further optimization of the field triage guidelines is needed to identify high-risk TBI and TSI patients.

  • positron annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy has been extensively applied in recent years to investigate the free volume in polymers owing to the capability of the electron-positron bound system (positronium) to probe the typical size of sub-nanometric cavities among the macromolecular chains. In this paper we show recent results obtained through this technique in some amorphous polymeric mem-branes(olyurethanes. PUs and polytrimethilsylilpropine PTMSP) after a brief survey of the general features of the annihilation process as well as of the experimental apparatus. Lifetime of o-ps decay({{{{ tau _3}}}}) in PUs increases going from sub {{{{ TAU _g}}}} to over {{{{ TAU _g}}}} temperatures following a sigmoid curve. The coefficient of dilatation of the free volume fraction is shown to be the sum of two contributes due to the variation with T of the number of holes and of their mean volume. PAL spectrum of PTMSP freshly prepared shows four lifetime components: {{{{ tau _3}}}} and {{{{ tau _4}}}}: only are useful for free volume study. Two kinds of holes of different equivalent radius are reported ({{{{ gamma _s}}}} 4.60 nm and {{{{ gamma _1}}}} 0.754) The equivalent volume does not change in a range of 100 K. however the physical aging increases density and decreases oxygen permeability while {{{{ gamma _s}}}} goes down to 0.374 and r1 to 0.735 The number of holes obtained from the intensities{{{{ IOTA _3}}}} and {{{{ IOTA _4}}}} of PAL spectra decreases with aging 21.7% and 3.5% for large and small holes respectively.

  • Background: Curcumin has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, and antinociceptive activity when administered systemically. We investigated the analgesic efficacy of intrathecal curcumin in a rat model of inflammatory pain. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats were prepared for intrathecal catheterization. Pain was evoked by injection of formalin solution (5%, $50{\mu}l$) into the hind paw. Curcumin doses of 62.5, 125, 250, and $500{\mu}g$were delivered through an intrathecal catheter to examine the flinching responses. The $ED_{50}$ values (half-maximal effective dose) with 95% confidence intervals of curcumin for both phases of the formalin test were calculated from the dose-response lines fitted by least-squares linear regression on a log scale. Results: In rats with intrathecal administration of curcumin, the flinching responses were significantly decreased in both phases. The slope of the regression line was significantly different from zero only in phase 2, and the $ED_{50}$ value (95% confidence interval) of curcumin was $511.4{\mu}g$ (23.5-1126.5). There was no apparent abnormal behavior following the administration of curcumin. Conclusions: Intrathecal administration of curcumin decreased inflammatory pain in rats, and further investigation to elucidate the precise mechanism of spinal action of curcumin is warranted.

  • We investigated the physicochemical stabilities and biological activities of ethanol- extracted pigment from marine bacteria Pseudoalteromonas sp. Ju11-1 and Pseudoalteromonas sp. Ju14. The bacterial pigment of strain Ju11-1 was very stable at pH 5.0 below $25^{\circ}C$. The stability of the pigment showed higher stability in the presence of metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$. The pigment has activity of free-radical scavenging ($IC_{50}$ $95.2{\mu}g$/ml) and the protective antioxidant effect ($ED_{50}$ $82.3{\mu}g$/ml) against DNA damage in human lymphocytes. The bacterial pigment of strain Ju14 was very stable at pH range between 4.0 and 8.0 below $40^{\circ}C$. In the presence of light, the pigment was also very stable, showing more than 90 percent of remaining absorbance during 14 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The stability of the pigment, when metal ions were present, showed higher stability in all examined metal ions except for $Fe^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$, especially in the presence of $Na^+$. The pigment has activity of freeradical scavenging ($IC_{50}$ $208.6{\mu}g$/ml) and the protective antioxidant effect ($ED_{50}$ $ 96.4{\mu}g$/m) against DNA damage in human lymphocytes. The result indicates that the bacterial pigments from marine bacteria, Pseudoalteromonas sp. Ju11-1 and Pseudoalteromonas sp. Ju14 showed higher physicochemical stability and significant effects for reduction in oxidative DNA damage. Therefore, the results suggest that these bacterial pigments could be used as a natural colorant having the advantages of antioxidant.
