  • In the present work, the vermicomposting index was investigated using leakage water from sludge to develop the process of mechanization and automation in the earthworm-cast treatment. The in situ sewage sludge was used batch and continuous experiments. Due to different treatment processes, the physico-chemical characteristics of liquid extracted from sludge was the similar change pattern. However, some items, such as Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC) and $NH_3-N$, showed the distinct changes between pre- and post-vermicomposting. Also, The ORP and EC were the best parameters for the vermicomposting index. These results offered that the present vermicomposting technology was an actual earthworm-cast treatment.

Effect of Plant-Growth-Promoting-Bacterial Inoculation on the Growth and Yield of Red Pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) with Different Soil Electrical Conductivity Level (염류수준별 고추 생육과 수량에 미치는 식물생육보진미생물(植物生育保進微生物) 접종효과)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of treatment with the plant-growth-promoting bacteria on the growth and yield of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) with different soil electrical conductivity(EC) levels. The mixed liquid culture was done pseudomonas P and saboraud dextrose medium. The isolated bacteria(IB) were inoculated by spray of 3.7ml at 1/2000a pot filled with different soil electrical conductivity level(2.9, 8.6, 11.5dS/m) every week, respectively, with mixed liquid culture (Pseudomonas P+Sabouraud dextrose) of eight strains. The plant height of red pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC levels showed better growth than IBs nontreatment in the order of the 2.9>8.6>11.5 dS/m. The yield of pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC level was higher in 13% than IBs nontreatment and chemical properties($P_2O_5$, K, Ca, Mg) of the soil after harvest in IBs treatment were slightly increased, while organic matter and EC of IBs treatment were slightly decreased than those of IBs nontreatment. Moisture content of the soil after the harvesting with IBs treatment was slightly increased than IBs nontreatment.

Analysis of Environmental Factors Associated with Cyanobacteria Dominance in Baekje Weir and Juksan Weir (백제보와 죽산보에서 남조류 우점 환경요인 분석)

  • Followingthe Four Rivers Project, cyanobacterial blooms have been frequently observed in the upstream of the installed weirs. The aim of this study was to characterize the major environmental factors that are associated with the cyanobacteria dominance in Baekje Weir (Geum River) and Juksan Weir (Youngsan River) based on intensive experiments and systematic data mining methods. The factors related to the cyanobacteria dominance include7-days cumulative rainfall (APRCP7), 7-days averaged flow (Q7day), water temperature (Temp), stratification strength (${\Delta}T$), electronic conductivity (EC), DO, pH, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, TN, TP, $PO_4-P$, Chl-a, Fe, BOD, COD, TOC, and $SiO_2$. The most highly correlatedfactors to the dominant cyanobacteria were found to be EC, Temp, Q7day, $PO_4-P$ in theBaekje Weir. On the other hand, those dominant in the Juksan Weir were ${\Delta}T$, TOC, Temp, EC and TN. The EC showed a strong correlation with cyanobacteria dominance in both weirs because a high EC represents a persisted low flow condition. The cyanobacteria dominance was as high as 56 % when the EC was equal or greater than $418{\mu}S/cm$ in Baekje Weir. It was as high as 63% when the ${\Delta}T{\geq}2.1^{\circ}C$ in the Juksan Weir. However, nutrients showed a minor correlation with cyanobacteria dominance in both weirs. The results suggest that the cyanobacteria dominate in astate where the water flow rate is low, water temperature is high and thermal stratification is strengthened. Therefore, the improvement of flow regimes is the most important to prevent persistent thermal stratification and formation of cyanobacteria bloom in theBaekje and JuksanWeirs.

  • The on-site sewage sludge vermicomposting equipment was designed and evaluated on the batch and continuous tests. The vermicomposting equipment was designed to consider the mechanization as well as automation. Especially, the automatic controls of water content and temperature and the mechanization of the sludge feeding and cast separating were the important factors. In terms of changes in chemical characteristics when the equipments for experiments are operated continuously, the ORP, EC, $NH_3-N$ and $NO_3-N$ were found to be higher before and after treatment. In addition, it was found that changes in properties were low. Furthermore, the $NO_3-N$ concentration of the humus produced after treatment was found to be higher than the $NH_3-N$ concentration showing that it was appropriate based on the recycling criteria.

Characteristics of Ionic Composition of Rainwater in Taean (태안지역 강우의 이온 조성)

  • The issue of acid precipitation and related environmental problems in East Asia has been emerging. To evaluate the acidity and chemical characteristics of rainwater in Korea, its chemical properties during cultivation season from April to October in 2005 were investigated at Taean. Also, to estimate the contribution of ions on acidity, ion composition characteristics and neutralization effects by cations were determined. The electrical conductivity balance between measured and estimated values showed a high correlation. Rainwater was highly distributed in the range of pH $4.5{\sim}5.0$. The acidity of rainwater was relatively low during the month of June compared with other monitored periods. $Na^+$ was the main cation, followed by $H^+>Ca^{2+}>NH_4^+>K^+>Mg^{2+}$. Among these ions, $Na^+,\;NH_4^+,\;Ca^{2+}$ and $H^+$ comprised over 94% of the total cations. Rainwater anion composition was more than 80% with $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$. In rainwater samples, $NH_4^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ contributed greatly to neutralizing the rain acidity. The sulfate content decreased until September, and sea salt derivatives were higher in May and October than during other monitored periods. Also, 78% of the soluble sulfate in rainwater was nss-$SO_4^{2-}$ (non-sea salt sulfate).

To evaluate the acidity and chemical characteristics of rainwater in Korea, its chemical properties during crop cultivation season from April to October were investigated at Suwon, Korea. Also, to estimate the contribution of ions on its acidity, ion composition characteristics and neutralization effects by cation ions were determined. Ion balance and electrical conductivity balance between the measured and estimated values showed high correlation. Rainwater had distributed highly in the range of pH 4.5~5.6. The pH of rainwater was relatively high at June as compared with other monitoring periods. $Na^+$ was the main cation followed by $NH_4{^+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $H^+$ > $K^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$. Among these, $Na^+$, $NH_4{^+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $H^+$ covered over 93% of total cations. About 86% of anion in rainwater was composed of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and $NO_3{^-}$. In rainwater samples, $NH_4{^+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ contributed greatly to neutralization of the rain acidity. Also, 88% of soluble sulfate in rainwater was nss-$SO{_4}^{2-}$(non-sea salt sulfate).

Effects of Substrates and the Rations of $\textrm{NO}_3^\;-$-N to $\textrm{NH}_4^\;+$-N in Nutrient Solution on Growth and Yield of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Bag-Culture (자루재배용 배지의 종류와 양액의 $\textrm{NO}_3^\;-$:$\textrm{NH}_4^\;+$-N의 비율이 단고추의 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of several substrates and ratio of NO3--N to NH4--N in nutrient solution on growth, yield and mineral uptake of sweet pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) in bag culture. The content of minerals such as P, K, Ca and Mg showed difference in concentration among media: P and Mg were the highest in vermiculite in vermiculti+rice hull, K in perlite+vermiculite and Ca in perlite+peatmoss; with the lowest in the single perlite medium respectively, Ca of mineral made fairly higest level in concentration compared with the others in all of the media. The concentration of mineral content was lower in the ratio of 8:2 than that of 10:0. Admitting that the pH made difference depending on the kind of substrates and ratios of NO3--N to NH4--N. The pH of 10:0 ratio in all the substrates was higher and more stable than that of 8:2. The range of EC in all the substrates showed from 1.78ds·m-1 to 2.10 ds·m-1, which was optimum range for growth of sweet pepper, and range of EC is larger in 8:2 ratio than that in 10:0 ratio. Plant height and stem diameter were nothing to do with the kind of substrates, but leaf area was the largest at vermiculite+rice hull of the 8:2 ratio, fresh and dry weights were heavier at peatmoss+carbonized rice hull, but were the lightest at perlite. All indexes related to the growth which had something to do with the kind of substrates higher in 8:2 ratio than those in 10:0 ratio. The number of fruit and fresh weight related to the ratio of the 8:2 were the highest as 17.5 at vermiculite+rice hull with 1,588g of fresh weight, while the yield from perlite was the lowest. The number of fruit was the highest as 16.4 at virmiculite+rice hull, yield was the higest as 1,394a at perlite+ peatmoss. The yield of 8:2 ratio at all substrates was higher than that of 10:0 ratio. Of the mineral content related to the plant part, K+ and Mg2+ were higher in concentration at leaf; Ca2+ were higher at root; PO4- was higher at stem and fruit; The content of mineral showed no difference between the ratio of the 8:2 and the ratio of the 10:0 with no regrading to the difference of mineral content among substrates; and K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ uptake of sweet pepper were higher at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2; 2while PO4- uptake of sweet pepper was lower at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2 ratio.

Contamination Characteristics of Agricultural Groundwater Around Livestock Burial Areas in Korea (가축매몰지 주변 농업지역 지하수의 수질오염 특성 분석)

  • Seasonal variations of major contaminants in groundwater around livestock burial areas in Gyeonggi province, Korea, were examined. Seven typical contamination indicators ($NO_3$-N, $NH_3$-N, chloride, pH, DO, ORP, and EC) were monitored in groundwater samples collected from 84 wells located within 60 m of livestock burial sites for the leachate plume emanating from the livestock burial sites. The monitoring results of pH, DO, ORP, and EC revealed minimal seasonal variations, providing no evidence for leachate plumes. The $NO_3$-N concentrations were below 30 mg/L and exhibited minimal seasonal fluctuations, even in the wells located close to (< 20 m) the burial sites; the $NH_3$-N and chloride concentrations also showed similar results. The contamination indicators examined in this study indicate that the observed groundwater contamination is primarily from preexisting pervasive contamination due to agricultural activities and livestock farming, not leachates derived from nearby livestock burial sites.

Physicochemical Properties of Organic Liquid Fertilizer with Oil Cake and Rice Bran as Affected by Microorganism and the Ratio of Molasses

  • The study was conducted to investigate changes in the characteristics of inorganic components during fermenting process of organic liquid fertilizers according to the type and ratio of microorganism and the amount of molasses when producing organic liquid fertilizers using sesame oil cake and rice bran. To select appropriate microorganisms, liquid fertilizers were produced through a 90-day fermentation process by adding mag-ggeo-li, yogurt, dried yeast, and leaf mold. The pH in liquid fertilizer was decreased, and then increased in all microorganism samples except the mag-ggeo-li sample. The EC was rapidly increased in all samples until the $10^{th}$ days after production, and showed no changes after the $60^{th}$ days in dried yeast and after the $30^{th}$ days in the other samples. The concentration of $NH_4$-N was generally increased with time. The concentration of $P_2O_5$ was rapidly increased until the $10^{th}$ days after production and was maintained at about 1% regardless of the type of microorganism. In terms of the characteristics of liquid fertilizers according to the ratio of selected dried yeast, the pH was decreased until the $30^{th}$ days after producing the liquid fertilizers, and then was increased regardless of the ratio of dried yeast. The EC was increased with time and showed no differences depending on the amount of dried yeast. The concentration of $NH_4$-N was increased with time and in proportion to the amount of dried yeast. In terms of the characteristics of liquid fertilizers according to the ratio of molasses, the pH was decreased with increasing the molasses. The EC and concentration of $P_2O_5$ were no differences according to the amount of molasses. When 3% molasses was added, the content of $NH_4$-N was 2.6 mg $L^{-1}$ at the beginning and was at 3,025 mg $L^{-1}$ on the $90^{th}$ days.

The Effect of NaOH treatment-Citric acid neutralization of Korean Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on Physicochemical Compositions of Domestic Swine Excrement for the Connection to Thermophilic Aerobic Oxidation (TAO) (구제역 긴급행동지침(SOP)상의 화학처리방법으로 처리된 양돈분뇨의 고온호기산화공정 적용 연구)

  • We planned to study how the chemical disposal designed by SOP can affect on physicochemical compositions of the livestock excrement. According to Livestock Manure Management Scheme, we experimented in two steps; the first step, NaOH treatment-Citric acid neutralization, and then the second procedure, Thermophilic Aerobic Oxidation (TAO) system. Physicochemical compositions of the 3-days-old samples after NaOH treatment were pH 10.31, EC 24.54 mS/cm, SCOD 3,022 mg/L, T-N 4,315 mg/L, $NH{_4}^+-N$ 1,960 mg/L, and not detected E. coli.. And those of one-day-old samples after citric acid neutralization were pH 7.36, EC 32.89 mS/cm, $SCOD_{Mn}$ 12,733 mg/L, T-N 4,787 mg/L, $NH{_4}^+-N$ 2,450 mg/L, and E. coli. not detected. In contrast, the physicochemical compositions of the treatment plots after the second treatment with TAO system (72hr) were pH 9.42 EC 24.21 mS/cm, $SCOD_{Mn}$ 3,660 mg/L, T-N 3,616 mg/L, $NH{_4}^+-N$ 1,190 mg/L, and no detection of E. coli.
