  • Patients with heart disease need long-term monitoring of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal using a portable electrocardiograph. This trend requires the miniaturization of data storage and faster transmission to medical doctors for diagnosis. The ECG signal needs to be utilized for efficient storage, processing and transmission, and its data must contain the important components for diagnosis, such as the P wave, QRS-complex, and T wave. In this study, we select the vertex which has a larger curvature value than the threshold value for compression. Then, we reconstruct the compressed signal using by radial basis function interpolation. This technique guarantees a lower percentage of root mean square difference with respect to the extracted sample points and preserves all the important features of the ECG signal. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated in the experiment using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston's Beth Israel Hospital arrhythmia database.

  • A sensor network system can be an efficient tool for healthcare telemetry for multiple users due to its power efficiency. One drawback is its limited data size. This paper proposed a real-time application of data compression/decompression method in u-Health monitoring system in order to improve the network efficiency. Our high priority was given to maintain a high quality of signal reconstruction since it is important to receive undistorted waveform. Our method consisted of down sampling coding and differential Huffman coding. Down sampling was applied based on the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem and signal amplitude was taken into account to increase compression rate in the differential Huffman coding. Our method was successfully tested in a ZigBee and WLAN dual network. Electrocardiogram (ECG) had an average compression ratio of 3.99 : 1 with 0.24% percentage root mean square difference (PRD). Photoplethysmogram (PPG) showed an average CR of 37.99 : 1 with 0.16% PRD. Our method produced an outstanding PRD compared to other previous reports.

  • In view of personal health and disease management based on cost effective healthcare services, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring services. The electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is one of the most important of health information and real-time monitoring of the ECG can provide an efficient way to cope with emergency situations, as well as assist in everyday health care. In this system, it is essential to continuously collect and transmit large amount of ECG data within a given time and provide maximum user convenience at the same time. When considering limited wireless capacity and unstable channel conditions, appropriate signal processing and transmission techniques such as compression are required. However, ISO/IEEE 11073 standards for interoperability between personal health devices cannot properly support compressed data transmission. Therefore, in the present study, the problems for handling compressed data are specified and new extended agent and manager are proposed to address the problems while maintaining compatibility with existing devices. Extended devices have two PM-stores enabling compression and a novel transmission scheme. A variety of compression techniques can be applied; in this paper, discrete cosine transformation (DCT) is used. And the priority of information after DCT compression enables new transmission techniques for performance improvement. The performance of the compressed signal and the original uncompressed signal transmitted over the noisy channel are compared in terms of percent root mean square difference (PRD) using our simulation results. Our transmission scheme shows a better performance and complies with 11073 standards.

  • As electrocardiogram(ECG) signals are generally sampled with a frequency of over 200Hz, a method to compress diagnostic information without losing data is required to store and transmit them efficiently. In this paper, an ECG signal compression method, which uses feature points based on curvature, is proposed. The feature points of P, Q, R, S, T waves, which are critical components of the ECG signal, have large curvature values compared to other vertexes. Thus, these vertexes are extracted with the proposed method, which uses local extremum of curvatures. Furthermore, in order to minimize reconstruction errors of the ECG signal, extra vertexes are added according to the iterative vertex selection method. Through the experimental results on the ECG signals from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database, it is concluded that the vertexes selected by the proposed method preserve all feature points of the ECG signals. In addition, they are more efficient than the AZTEC(Amplitude Zone Time Epoch Coding) method.

  • In this paper, we describe an approach to ECG data coding based on a fractal theory of iterated contractive transformations defined piecewise. The main characteristic of this approach is that it relies on the assumption that signal redundancy can be efficiently captured and exploited through piecewise self-transformability on a block-wise basis. The variable range size technique is employed to reduce the reconstruction error. Large ranges are used for encoding the smooth waveform to yield high compression efficiency, and the smaller ranges are used for encoding rapidly varying parts of the signal to preserve the signal quality. The suggested algorithm was evaluated using MIT/BIH arrhythmia database. A high compression ratio is achieved with a relatively low reconstruction error.

  • In an emergency telemedicine system such as High-quality Multimedia based Real-time Emergency Telemedicine(HMRET) service, it is very important to examine the status of the patient continuously using the multimedia data including the biological signals(ECG, BP, Respiration, $SpO_2$) of the patient. In order to transmit these data real time through the communication means which have the limited transmission capacity. It is also necessary to compress the biological data besides other multimedia data. For the HMRET service, we developed the lossless biological signal compression program in MSVC++ 6.0 using DPCM method and JPEG Huffman table, and tested in an internet environment.

  • The real-time bio-signal monitoring system based on the ZigBee and SIP/RTP has proposed and implemented for telemedicine but that has some problems at the stabilities to transmit bio-signal from the sensors to the other sides. In this paper, we designed and implemented a real-time bio-signal monitoring system that is focused on the reliability and efficiency for transmitting bio-signal at real-time. We designed the system to have enhanced architecture and performance in the ubiquitous sensor network, SIP/RTP real-time transmission and management of the database. The Bluetooth network is combined with ZigBee network to distribute traffic of the ECG and the other bio-signal. The modified and multiplied RTP session is used to ensure real-time transmission of ECG, other bio-signals and speech information on the internet. The modified ECG compression method based on DWLT and MSVQ is used to reduce data rate for storing ECG to the database. Finally we implemented a system that has improved performance for transmitting bio-signal from the sensors to the monitoring console and database. This implemented system makes possible to make various applications to serve U-health care services.
