  • In this paper, a non-conforming 3-D 8-node solid element(MQM10) has beets applied to the analyses of static and dynamic bending problems of laminated composite plates The QM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness which is caused by the reduction of degree of freedom from Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon the modification of Gauss sampling points for composite plates is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of material properties. Also, another two modified equations are obtained, one is modification for stress, and the other is modification of coefficient of shear modulus in free vibration. It is noted that MQM10 element can analyse the static and free vibration problems of various 3-dimensional composite plates composed of unidirectional laminae, woven laminae or braided laminae. The results of MQM10 element are in good agreement with those of 20-node element.

  • For solving the environmental problem of the waste EPDM and for new TPE blend materials, we developed a new kind of TPE material using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. To improve the mechanical properties of TPE material such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus of the blend, PP and waste EPDM powder were blended with different screw configurations. The mechanical properties of the blends and morphology of the TPE were investigated. As the number of kneading disc and left-handed screw element increased, dynamic vulcanization of the material was increased because the shear stress and residence time of blends increased.

  • Generally the dynamic characteristics of stone wall structures depend on several factors such as contact, the type of interlocking bonding stones, and the filling materials. This paper describes a non-destructive technique for diagnosis of historic masonry stone structures using the measurement of natural frequency technique. For this purpose, the castle wall of Nag-An Folk Town located in Sunchon, Korea was selected as a model. The Nag-An Town Castle is one of the well maintained historical remains constructed in the Chosun Kingdom of Korea. The construction started in 1397 A.D and was finished in 1626 A.D. The non-mortar castle wall is 1470m long and the average height is 4m with a width of 3 4m. The exterior of the wall is bonded with 1 2 m rectangular rough-faced stone and the inside of the wall is filled with gravel. The traditional village still remains inside the Nag-An Town Castle, and they have a regional food festival every October. Transverse vibrations were measured at 8 points around the castle. The measured natural frequency of the first mode was 26Hz 41Hz, and the shear modulus of filling material was 2.142 x $10^3$ ~ 8.915 x $10^3$kgf/$cm^2$ . With these results, it may be assumed that the filling material is gravel or a sand-gravel mixture. It is expected that the information provided by this paper will be useful for addressing the maintenance problems of the old castle walls.

  • The ever-increasing amount of waste vinyl is causing big environmental problems. In particular, those from farming industry are sometimes left on site or even illegally reclaimed due to the lack of environmental concerns and capacity for collection, which worsens the situation. It is, therefore, believed that the recycling of waste vinyl is the most ideal solution in the viewpoint of environmental preservation. In this context, the potential of vinyl strip as a ground reinforcing material is investigated to expand the application of waste vinyl recycling. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and resonant column tests were performed for sand specimens reinforced with vinyl strips and cement to investigate their reinforcing effects on static and dynamic behaviors. The changes in the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the shear modulus and the damping ratio according to the mixing ratio of vinyl strips and cements were analysed for sand specimens, having 40% and 60% relative densities, under various mixing conditions. As a result, both the static and dynamic reinforcing effects of vinyl strip-cement mixture were confirmed and the optimum mixing ratio was proposed.

  • The representative tests in this study are performed at a selected site which has the soil layers to analyze the safety and economy of the dynamic analysis for the variable soil conditions. Crosshole test and downhole test of small strain level tests and triaxial test of large strain level test are performed in the soil layers, and in the rock layers, crosshole test and downhole in-situ tests and laboratory sonic test are performed to measure the dynamic shear modulus, damping ratio, and Poisson$\acute{s}$ ratio of the soil and the rock. The correlations between the dynamic soil properties from the tests and the basic soil properties are determined through the regression analysis. The representative design value of the soil is determined by probability analysis of the test results. It is determined from the nonlinear stress-strain model in soils, and the value at small strain level is computed in rocks according to the distribution of the type of soils and the affecting variables. The constitutive value is systematized to be utilized in the analysis of the test results, and computation of the input soil data.

  • The interlayers, either softer or stiffer than the surrounding layers, are usually overlooked during field investigation due to the small thickness. They may be neglected through the analysis process for simplicity. However, they may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system. In this study, a series of 3D finite-element Direct-solution steady-state harmonic analyses were carried out using ABAQUS/CAE software to investigate the impacts of interlayers on the dynamic response of a cast in place pile group subjected to horizontal harmonic load. The experimental data of a 3×2 pile group testing was used to verify the numerical modeling. The effects of thickness, depth, and shear modulus of the interlayers on the dynamic response of the pile group are investigated. The simulations were conducted on both stiff and soft soils. It was found that the soft interlayers affect the frequency-amplitude curve of the system only in frequencies higher than 70% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. While, the effect of stiff interlayer in soft base soil started at frequency of 35% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. Also, it was observed that a shallow stiff interlayer increased the resonant amplitude by 11%, while a deep one only increased the resonant frequency by 7%. Moreover, a shallow soft interlayer increased the resonant frequency by 20% in soft base soils, whereas, it had an effect as low as 6% on resonant amplitude. Also, the results showed that deep soft interlayers increased the resonant amplitude by 17 to 20% in both soft and stiff base soils due to a reduction in lateral support of the piles. In the cases of deep thick, soft interlayers, the resonant frequency reduced significantly, i.e., 16 to 20%. It was found that the stiff interlayers were most effective on the amplitude and frequency of the pile group.

  • The purpose of this study is to carry out the quantitative sensitivity analysis on rockfill material influencing the dam crest displacement of CFRD(Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam) subjected to earthquake loading. The total 105 dynamic numerical analyses (2 input earthquake, 2 magnitudes for each earthquake. 27 rockfill material property combinations obtained from large triaxial tests) on CFR type "D" dam in operation were conducted. The global sensitivity analysis was carried out using the results of numerical analysis. From the results of sensitivity analysis, It was found that the crest settlement of the CFR type dam subjected to earthquake was absolutely affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material irrespective of the input earthquakes and the maximum acceleration of each earthquake. Also, it was found that the horizontal displacement of the dam crest was highly affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material though the extent of effect on that was smaller than the settlement and the extent of effect depended on the input earthquakes and the maximum acceleration of each earthquake. On the contrary, it was found that the effect of friction angle was negligible.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of a cold-recycling asphalt mixture used as a base layer and to determine the optimum emulsified-asphalt content for ensuring the mixture's performance. METHODS : The physical properties (storage stability, mixability, and workability) of three types of asphalt emulsion (CMS-1h, CSS-1h, and CSS-1hp) were evaluated using the rotational viscosity test. Asphalt emulsion residues, prepared according to the ASTM D 7497-09 standard, were evaluated for their rheological properties, including the $G*/sin{\delta}$and the dynamic shear modulus (${\mid}G*{\mid}$). In addition, the Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, and tensile-strength ratio (TSR) were evaluated for the cold-recycling asphalt mixtures fabricated according to the type and contents of the emulsified asphalt. RESULTS : The CSS-1hp was found to be superior to the other two types in terms of storage stability, mixability, and workability, and its $G*/sin{\delta}$ value at high temperatures was higher than that of the other two types. From the dynamic shear modulus test, the CSS-1hp was also found to be superior to the other two types, with respect to low-temperature cracking and rutting resistance. The mixture test indicated that the indirect tensile strength and TSR increased with the increasing emulsified-asphalt content. However, the mixtures with one-percent emulsified-asphalt content did not meet the national specification in terms of the aggregate coverage (over 50%) and the indirect tensile strength (more than 0.4 MPa). CONCLUSIONS : The emulsified-asphalt performance varied greatly, depending on the type of base material and modifying additives; therefore, it is considered that this will have a great effect on the performance of the cold-recycling asphalt pavement. As the emulsified-asphalt content increased, the strength change was significant. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the strength properties as a factor for determining the optimum emulsified-asphalt content in the mix design. The 1% emulsified-asphalt content did not satisfy the strength and aggregate coverage criteria suggested by national standards. Therefore, the minimum emulsified-asphalt content should be specified to secure the performance.

  • In this study, quantitative sensitivity analysis on rockfill material influencing the dam crest settlement of CFRD (Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam) subjected to earthquake loading was carried out. The purpose of this study is to indicate the most important input parameter from the results of sensitivity analysis, to show the quantitative variation of settlement at the crest of CFR type dam during earthquake with this input parameter, and to recommend the approximate estimation method of the settlement on the crest of CFRD subjected to earthquake loading. The statistic characteristics of rockfill parameters which were obtained from large triaxial tests were evaluated. The total 108 dynamic numerical analyses (2 input earthquake, 2 magnitudes for each earthquake, 27 rockfill material property combinations) on CFRD were conducted. The global sensitivity analysis was carried out using the results of numerical analysis. From the sensitivity analysis, It was found that the crest settlement of the CFRD subjected to earthquake was absolutely affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material irrespective of the input earthquakes and the magnitude of input acceleration. On the contrary, it was found that the effect of cohesion and friction angle of rockfill was negligible. From the results of sensitivity analysis and numerical analysis, the approximate estimation method of the settlement on the crest of CFRD subjected to earthquake loading was recommended on condition that the rockfill shear modulus and simple dam information was known.
