Study on failure behaviors of mixed-mode cracks under static and dynamic loads

  • In the present study, a series of physical experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of mode I and mixed-mode I/II cracks on the fracture modes and stability of roadway tunnel models. The experiments and simulations incorporated different inclination angle flaws under both static and dynamic loads. The quasi-static and dynamic testing were conducted by using an electro-hydraulic servo control device and drop weight impact system (DWIS), and the failure process was simulated by using rock failure process analysis (RFPA) and AUTODYN software. The stress intensity factor was also calculated to evaluate the stability of the flawed roadway tunnel models by using ABAQUS software. According to comparisons between the test and numerical results, it is observed that for flawed roadways with a single radical crack and inclination angle of 45°, the static and dynamic stability are the lowest relative to other angles of fractured rock masses. For mixed-mode I/II cracks in flawed roadway tunnel models under dynamic loading, a wing crack is produced and the pre-existing cracks increase the stress concentration factor in the right part of the specimen, but this factor will not be larger than the maximum principal stress region in the roadway tunnel models. Additionally, damage to the sidewalls will be involved in the flawed roadway tunnel models under static loads.

  • Control algorithms for the absorption air conditioning system may be developed by using dynamic models of the system. The simplified effective dynamic models, which can predict the dynamic behaviors of the system, may help to develop effective control algorithms for the system. In this study, control algorithms for an absorption air conditioning system were developed by using a dynamic simulation program. A cooling water inlet temperature control algorithm, a chilled water outlet temperature control algorithm, and a supply air temperature control algorithm, were developed and analyzed. The steepest descent method was used as an optimal algorithm. The simulation results showed energy savings and the effective controls of an absorption air conditioning system.

  • This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

Analysis on the dynamic characteristics of RAC frame structures

  • The dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are carried out, the rate-dependent mechanical models of RAC are proposed. The dynamic mechanical behaviors of RAC frame structure are investigated by adopting the numerical simulation method of the finite element. It is indicated that the lateral stiffness and the hysteresis loops of RAC frame structure obtained from the numerical simulation agree well with the test results, more so for the numerical simulation which is considered the strain rate effect than for the numerical simulation with strain rate excluded. The natural vibration frequency and the lateral stiffness increase with the increase of the strain rate. The dynamic model of the lateral stiffness is proposed, which is reasonably applied to describe the effect of the strain rate on the lateral stiffness of RAC frame structure. The effect of the strain rate on the structural deformation and capacity of RAC is analyzed. The analyses show that the inter-story drift decreases with the increase of the strain rate. However, with the increasing strain rate, the structural capacity increases. The dynamic models of the base shear coefficient and the overturning moment of RAC frame structure are developed. The dynamic models are important and can be used to evaluate the strength deterioration of RAC structure under dynamic loading.

Developing Job Flow Time Prediction Models in the Dynamic Unbalanced Job Shop

  • This research addresses flow time prediction in the dynamic unbalanced job shop scheduling environment. The specific purpose of the research is to develop the job flow time prediction model in the dynamic unbalance djob shop. Such factors as job characteristics, job shop status, characteristics of the shop workload, shop dispatching rules, shop structure, etc, are considered in the prediction model. The regression prediction approach is analyzed within a dynamic, make-to-order job shop simulation model. Mean Absolute Lateness (MAL) and Mean Relative Error (MRE) are used to compare and evaluate alternative regression models devloped in this research.

A Test for Autocorrelation in Dynamic Panel Data Models

  • This paper presents an autocorrelation test that is applicable to dynamic panel data models with serially correlated errors. The residual-based GMM t-test is a significance test that is applied after estimating a dynamic model by using the instrumental variable(IV) method and is directly applicable to any other consistently estimated residuals. Monte Carlo simulations show that the t-test has considerably more power than the $m_2$ test or the Sargan test under both forms of serial correlation (i.e., AR(1) and MA(1)).

  • In this paper, dynamic simulation results for magnetically-levitated vehicles are resented. The dynamic equation and models for a half-bogie system are derived. The system includes primary suspension system, magnet module, spring-damper system and cabin. Also, the dynamic characteristics for the derived models are analysed. Using the results, levitation control algorithm can be designed to meet the performance requirements.
