  • This paper proposes an SSSC based on multi-bridge inverters in PWM scheme. The proposed system consists of 6 H-bridge inverter modules per phase. The dynamic characteristic of proposed system was analyzed by simulation with EMTP codes, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the 154-kV transmission line of one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works with a scaled-model. The proposed system can be directly inserted in the transmission line without coupling transformers, and has flexibility in expanding the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridges.

  • This research is concerned with the validation of the modeling technique and controller design for slewing beam structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. Comparisons with the theoretical model are made based upon the frequency responses and time responses. A new factor called the coupling coefficient is introduced to incorporate the discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. The slewing is achieved by applying the PID control, which is found to be less sensitive to vibrations. The vibrations are controlled by PPF controller, which is found to be effective in suppressing residual vibrations after slewing. The vibrations occurred during slewing is difficult to control because the piezoceramic actuator is not powerful enough to overcome inertial loadings.

  • In this paper a dynamic behavior of a cracked cantilever pipe conveying fluid with the moving mass is presented. It has the results focused on the frequency change. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. When the velocity of the moving mass is constant, the influences of the crack severity, the position of the crack, the moving mass, and the coupling of these factors on the frequencies of the cantilever pipe are depicted.

  • An investigation into the stochastic bifurcation and response statistits of an autoparameteric system under broad-band random excitation is made. The specific system examined is a spring-pendulum system with internal resonance, which is known to be a good model for a variety of engineering systems, including ship motions with nonlinear coupling between pitching and rolling motions. The Fokker-Planck equations is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the dynamic moment of response coordinates. By means of the Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure methods the dynamic moment equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability we examine the stochastic bifurcation and response statistics. The analytical results are compared with results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Electron whistlers frequently excite proton whistlers. The proton whistlers appear on the dynamic spectrum as rising tones, which start after the reception of a short electron whistler, asymptotically approaching the local proton gyro-frequency. The proton whistlers are dispersed forms of lightning impulses and their dispersion can be explained by the effects of heavy ions such as H+ and He+ on the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in the ionosphere. In the ionosphere, a right-handed circularly-polarized electron whistler becomes coupled to a left-handed circularly-polarized proton whistler when the frequency becomes close to a cross-over frequency. By adopting the multi-fluid numerical wave model, we examine how the mode coupling varies as the ion composition changes along altitude in the mid-latitude ionosphere. The time histories and dynamic spectra of electric fields are presented. In addition, we compare our results with the previous theoretical and observational studies.

  • In this paper, a new control algorithm for the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is proposed to regulate the load terminal voltage during various power quality problems that include sag, swell, harmonics and unbalance in the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). The proposed control strategy is an Adaline (Adaptive linear element) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and is used to control a capacitor supported DVR for power quality improvement. A capacitor supported DVR does not need any active power during steady state because the voltage injected is in quadrature with the feeder current. The control of the DVR is implemented through derived reference load terminal voltages. The proposed control strategy is validated through extensive simulation studies using the MATLAB software with its Simulink and SimPower System (SPS) toolboxes. The DVR is found suitable to support its dc bus voltage through the control under various disturbances.

  • Responses of asymmetrical multistorey buildings to earthquakes are obtained by quasi-static code approach and real time dynamic analysis, using two different structural models. In the first model, all vertical members are assumed to be restrained at the slab levels and hence their end rotations, about horizontal axes, are taken as zero. In the second model this restriction is removed and the rotation is assumed to be proportional to the lateral stiffness of the member. A simple microcomputer based procedure is used in the analyses, by both models. Numerical examples are presented where results obtained from both the models are given. Effects of modelling on the response of three buildings, each with a different type and degree of asymmetry, are studied. Results for deflections and shear forces are presented and the effects of the type of model on the response are discussed.

  • In this study, the high frequency SMD ceramic resonators with the size of $3.7{\times}3.1{\times}0.385\textrm{mm}^3$ were fabricated using $Pb_{0.88}(La_{0.6}Nd_{0.4})_{0.08}(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})_{0.02}Ti_{0.98}O_3$ ceramics with the variations of electrode radius size. With increasing the electrode radius size, resonant resistance in third overtone mode was decreased and electromechanical coupling factor($k_{t3}$) in third overtone mode was showed constant values. Taking into consideration mechanical quality factor($Qm_{t3}$) of 5,552 and dynamic range(D.R) of 60.72dB in third overtone mode, the ceramic resonator with the electrode radius size of $\theta$1.13mm was suitable for 20MHz resonator application.

  • The droplet motion on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is studied by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid- gas interface is determined by an level-set method which is based on a sharp-interface representation for accurately imposing the matching or coupling conditions at the interface. The method is modified to treat the dynamic contact angle at the liquid-gas-solid interface. The computations are performed to investigate a droplet impact and merging pattern on a flat substrate to find a optimal condition in a micro-line patterning process. The effects of dynamic contact angles on droplet motion are quantified.
