  • Advances in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have enabled small and low-cost sensors with the capability of sensing various types of physical and environmental conditions, data processing, and wireless communication. In the WSN, the sensor nodes have a limited transmission range and their processing and storage capabilities as well as their energy resources are limited. A triple umpiring system has already been proved for its better performance in WSNs. The clustering technique is effective in prolonging the lifetime of the WSN. In this study, we have modified the ad-hoc on demand distance vector routing by incorporating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based dynamic clustering. The proposed scheme, which is an efficient and secure routing protocol for wireless sensor networks through SNR-based dynamic clustering (ESRPSDC) mechanisms, can partition the nodes into clusters and select the cluster head (CH) among the nodes based on the energy, and non CH nodes join with a specific CH based on the SNR values. Error recovery has been implemented during the inter-cluster routing in order to avoid end-to-end error recovery. Security has been achieved by isolating the malicious nodes using sink-based routing pattern analysis. Extensive investigation studies using a global mobile simulator have shown that this hybrid ESRP significantly improves the energy efficiency and packet reception rate as compared with the SNR unaware routing algorithms such as the low energy aware adaptive clustering hierarchy and power efficient gathering in sensor information systems.

  • The QoS(Quality of Service) of VoD(Video on Demand) systems can be improved by reducing the faults that the stream service request from clients is rejected by the VoD server or lost during the service. This paper proposes a model of Dynamic Workload Balancer that can adjust the workload dynamically through the periodical monitoring of the VoD system, and so increase the throughput. The proposed model runs independently from the VoD system by adopting the agent concept. The model comprises the agency part interfacing the VoD system and the intelligence part reasoning or teaming the facts required for the adjustment of workload. An experiment of implementing a simulator was conducted to see whether or not application of the proposed model to VoD system is effective. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the throughput was relatively increased when the proposed model was applied compared to existing means.

  • The present study has been conducted to simulate dynamics of a gas engine-driven heat pump (GHP) for the design of control algorithm. The dynamic model of a GHP was based on conservation laws of mass and energy. For the control of refrigerant pressures, actuators such as an engine throttle valve, outdoor fans, coolant three-way valves and liquid injection valves were controlled by P or PI algorithm. The simulation results were found to be realistic enough to be applied for the control algorithm design. The model could be applied to build a virtual real-time GHP system so that it interfaces with a real controller for the purpose of developing control algorithm.

  • A study on fire phenomena in a subway transit mass station has been carried out as a part of disaster prevention plan at the subway station. The ventilation facilities installed in both the platform and the trackway are designed to convert into a smoke exhaust system in emergency situation, creating an environment necessary for evacuation. 3 dimensional Numerical Simulations based on the CFD are carried out using a simulation tool, Fire Dynamic Simulator. Total of six different cases are made and performances are compared each other to find optimal vents operation to ensure safer environment for evacuation at the platform area considering the installation of platform screen door.

  • In this study, the dynamic characteristic of a contact wire and pantograph suppling electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated. The analysis of the loss of contact based on Power Simulator program software is performed to develop power line disturbance model suitable for high speed operation. It is confirmed that a contact wire and pantograph model are necessary for studying the dynamic behavior of the pantograph system.

  • Generally, an electric railroad feeding system has many problems due to the different characteristics in contrast with a load of general three-phase AC electric power system. One of them is harmonics problem caused by the switching device existing in the feeding system, and moreover, the time-varying dynamic loads of rail way is inherently another cause to increase this harmonics problem. In Korea power systems, the electric railroad feeding system is directly supplied from the substation of KEPCO. Therefore, if voltages fluctuation or unbalanced voltages are created by the voltage and current distortion or voltage drop during operation, it affects directly the source of supply. The trainloads of electric railway system have non-periodic but iterative harmonic characteristics as operating condition, because the electric characteristic of the electric railroad feeding system is changed by physical conditions of the each trainload. According to the traditional study, the estimation of harmonics has been performed by deterministic way using the steady state data at the specific time. This method is easy to analyze harmonics, but it has limits in some cases which needs an assessment of dynamic load and reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes the probabilistic estimation method, moments matching method(MW) in order to overcome the drawback of deterministic method. In this paper, distributions for each harmonics are convolved to obtain the moments and cumulants of TDD(Total Demand Distortion), and this can be generalized for any number of trains. For the case study, the electric railway system of LAT(Intra Airport Transit) in Incheon International Airport is modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulator. The raw data of harmonics for the moments matching method is acquired from simulation of the LAT model.

  • The application of a sliding mode control for improving the dynamic response of an induction motor based speed control system is presented in this paper and provides attractive features, such as fast response, good transient performance, and insensitivity to variations in plant parameters and external disturbance. However, chattering is a difficult problem for which the sliding mode control is a popular solution. This paper presents a new fuzzy-sliding mode controller for a sensorless vector-controlled induction motor servo system to practically eliminate the chattering problem for traction applications. A DSP based implementation of the speed control system is employed. Experimental results are presented using a propulsion system simulator. The performance of the drive is shown to be practically free from chattering.

The robot with 4 and 6 axes modeled SM5 and AM1 respectively were adopted as an objective model. Forward kinematics, inverse kinematics and robot dynamics modeling were included in the developed off-line program. The interface between users and the off$.$line programming system in the Windows XP's graphic user interface environment was also studied. The developing language is Microsoft Visual C++. • We developed an adaptive optics test bench using an optical simulator and two rotating phase plates that mimicked the atmospheric turbulence at Bohyunsan Observatory. The observatory was reported to have a Fried parameter with a mean value of 85 mm and standard deviation of 13 mm, often expressed as 85 ± 13 mm. First, we fabricated several phase plates to generate realistic atmospheric-like turbulence. Then, we selected a pair from among the fabricated phase plates to emulate the atmospheric turbulence at the site. The result was 83 ± 11 mm. To address dynamic behavior, we emulated the atmospheric disturbance produced by a wind flow of 8.3 m/s by controlling the rotational speed of the phase plates. Finally, we investigated how closely the atmospheric disturbance simulation emulated reality with an investigation of the measurements on the optical table. The verification confirmed that the simulator showed a Fried parameter of 87 ± 15 mm as designed, but a little slower wind velocity (7.5 ± 2.5 m/s) than expected. This was because of the nonlinear motion of the phase plates. In conclusion, we successfully mimicked the atmospheric disturbance of Bohyunsan Observatory with an error of less than 10% in terms of Fried parameter and wind velocity.
