The purpose of this study is to develop improved boom structures with reliable fatigue strength of weldment and lower production cost. For that purpose, multi-body dynamic analysis was performed to evaluate forces acting on arm & boom cylinders and joints of boom structure during operation of an excavator for three working postures, then stress analysis was made to investigate stress distribution around diaphragms at the bottom plate of boom structures which was known to be susceptible to fatigue failures of welded joints, and finally boom structures with optimum arrangement of diaphragms was proposed. This work mainly consists of the following two parts: part 1 focuses on multi-body dynamic analysis of excavators during operation and part 2 includes evaluations of fatigue strength of welded joints for modified boom structures.

In this paper, the finite element equations for the transient linear viscoelastic stress analysis are presented in time domain, whose variational formulation is derived by using the Galerkin's method based on the equations of motion in time integral. Since the inertia terms are not included in the variational formulation, the time integration schemes such as the Newmark's method widely used in the classical dynamic analysis based on the equations of motion in time differential are not required in the development of that formulation, resulting in a computationally simple and stable numerical algorithm. The viscoelastic material is assumed to behave as a standard linear solid in shear and an elastic solid in dilatation. To show the validity of the presented method, two numerical examples are solved nuder plane strain and plane stress conditions and good results are obtained.

According to the developments of automobile industry, a technology has been studied in a point of view of environment, which is to increase fuel consumption rate. Especially it is well known that a weight reduction is one of the main technologies to increase the fuel consumption rate and, also to decrease the cost of manufacturing. This paper presents the method for reducing weight of bracket, which connects air conditioner compressor to engine, based on dynamic stress analysis and engineer's intuition for optimal design.
This study uses an explicit numerical algorithm to evaluate the ultimate load capacity analysis of a unit Strarch frame, accounting for the initial imperfection effects of the stress-erection process. Displacement-based filament beam element and an explicit dynamic relaxation method with kinetic damping are used to achieve the analysis. The section is composed of the finite number of filaments that can be conveniently modeled by various material models. Ramberg-Osgood and bilinear kinematic elastic plastic material models are formulated to analyze the nonlinear material behaviors of filaments. The numerical results obtained in the present study are compared with the results of experiment for stress-erection and buckling of unit Strarch frames.
This study performed a precise dynamic finite element time history elastic-plastic seismic analysis considering the welds, which have been not considered in design stage, on the nuclear components subjected to severe seismic loadings such as beyond-design basis earthquakes for sustainable nuclear power plants. First, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis was performed for a general design practice that does not take into account the welds of the pressurizer surge line system, one of safety class I components in nuclear power plants, and then the reference values for the accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain, and von Mises effective stress were set. Second, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analyses were performed for the case of considering only the mechanical strength over-mismatch of the welds as well as for the case of considering both the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain. Third, the effects of the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain were analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results with the reference values. As a result of the comparison, it was found that not considering the strength over-mismatch may lead to conservative assessment results, whereas not considering the welding residual strain may be non-conservative.
The dynamic force estimation and strength design of KALES(Korea Accelerated Loading and Environmental Simulator) are studied. The KALES is continuously rotating the test track and subjected to the dynamic or impact forces during operation since the track is composed of straight and curved line. To estimate the dynamic equation for the model car which was already made is derived with analytical and experimental techniques. Using similarity relationships between the model car and KALES, the dynamic force and stability properties for KALES can be predicted. The stress analysis and fatigue life estimation of KALES is also estimated with the calculated dynamic load. From the stress analysis and fatigue life estimation results, it was found that the design of KALES is safe.

For the improvement of fuel consumption, the study on the use of lightweight material or thinner sheet have been carried out in automotive industry. With the need for the use of thinner sheet, the dent resistance became one of the major concern in th design of exterior panels in automotive industry. Many studies have been carried out for the dent resistance by experiment or quasi-static numerical simulation. In this study, the dent formation behavior is investigated by dynamic finite element analysis using ABAQUS. Dent formation may be affected by many factors such as sheet thickness, material properties, pre-strain, and sheet curvature. The effect of these factors on dent resistance is investigated. From the analysis following three conclusions are derived. First, dent resistance become hard as the sheet curvature radius increases. Second, dynamic dent resistance is mainly affected by bending stress rather than tensile stress. Third, the pre-strain itself do not give any guidance for dynamic dent resistance and dynamic dent resistance have to be decided considering the strain hardening and thickness reduction together. The results are considered to be reliable and useful to improve the dent damage of automotive panels.

Analysis of dynamic or impact problems is very important in engineering fields such as airplanes and automobiles. In the present study, two-dimensional elastodynamic BEM program with Laplace transformation is developed to analyze dynamic or impact problems. Accuracy and efficiency of the BEM program are tested by making the comparision of impact analysis of some models with other's published results. The BEM developed is applied to the impact crack problem and the dynamic stress intensity factors of some impact cracks is obtained by the displacement extrapolation method. It is confirmed to be possible to analyze impact problems accurately with only a little elements in simple models. And also it is found to be careful to use the singular element usually using in static crack problems because that the elastodynamic fundamental solution usually using in static crack problems because that the elastodynamic fundamental solution has more sensitive singularity than the static fundamental solution and to determine the boundary conditions in dynamic problems.

Researches on the FRF-based substructuring method have been mainly focused on vibratory response analysis. Present study is concerned about the application of the method to the dynamic stress analysis of a compressor mounting bracket in a passenger car. This is performed by using reaction forces that can be obtained by the FRF-based substructuring method. The air-conditioner system, composed of a compressor, a bracket and a test jig, is analyzed by using the FRF-based substructuring method. The experimental and numerical FRFs are combined to calculate the system responses and reaction forces at the connection point. The dynamic reaction forces plugged into the bracket FE model to compute the compute the stresses of the bracket. Dynamic stresses by the present method are compared with those from FE model. The comparison shows possibility of practical usage of the method for the real problem.

Dynamic behavior of temperature-dependent Reddy functionally graded (RFG) nanobeam subjected to thermomagnetic effects under the action of moving point load is carried out in the present work. Both symmetric and sigmoid functionally graded material distributions throughout the beam thickness are considered. To consider the significance of strain-stress gradient field, a material length scale parameter (LSP) is introduced while the significance of nonlocal elastic stress field is considered by introducing a nonlocal parameter (NP). In the framework of the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT), the dynamic equations of motion are derived through Hamilton's principle. Navier approach is employed to solve the resulting equations of motion of the functionally graded (FG) nanoscale beam. The developed model is verified and compared with the available previous results and good agreement is observed. Effects of through-thickness variation of FG material distribution, beam aspect ratio, temperature variation, and magnetic field as well as the size-dependent parameters on the dynamic behavior are investigated. Introduction of the magnetic effect creates a hardening effect; therefore, higher values of natural frequencies are obtained while smaller values of the transverse deflections are produced. The obtained results can be useful as reference solutions for future dynamic and control analysis of FG nanobeams reinforced nanocomposites under thermomagnetic effects.
