Investigating Arithmetic Mean, Harmonic Mean, and Average Speed through Dynamic Visual Representations

  • Working with dynamic visual representations can help students-with-computer discover new mathematical ideas. Students translate among multiple representations as a strategy to investigate non-routine problems to explore possible solutions in mathematics classrooms. In this paper, we use the area models as new representations for our secondary students to investigate three problems related to the average speed of a particle. Students show their ideas in the process of investigating arithmetic mean, harmonic mean, and average speed through their created dynamic figures. These figures really utilize dynamic geometry software.

Simulations of the Dynamic Load in a Francis Runner based on measurements of Grid Frequency Variations

  • In the Nordic grid, a trend observed the recent years is the increase in grid frequency variations, which means the frequency is outside the normal range (49.9-50.1 Hz) more often. Variations in the grid frequency leads to changes in the speed of rotation of all the turbines connected to the grid, since the speed of rotation is closely related to the grid frequency for synchronous generators. When the speed of rotation changes, this implies that the net torque acting on the rotating masses are changed, and the material of the turbine runners must withstand these changes in torque. Frequency variations thus leads to torque oscillations in the turbine, which become dynamical loads that the runner must be able to withstand. Several new Francis runners have recently experienced cracks in the runner blades due to fatigue, obviously due to the runner design not taking into account the actual loads on the runner. In this paper, the torque oscillations and dynamic loads due to the variations in grid frequency are simulated in a 1D MATLAB program, and measured grid frequency is used as input to the simulation program. The maximum increase and decrease in the grid frequency over a 440 seconds interval have been investigated, in addition to an extreme event where the frequency decreased far below the normal range within a few seconds. The dynamic loading originating from grid frequency variations is qualitatively found by a constructed variable $T_{stress}$, and for the simulations presented here the variations in $T_{stress}$ are found to be around 3 % of the mean value, which is a relatively small dynamic load. The important thing to remember is that these dynamic loads come in addition to all other dynamic loads, like rotor-stator interaction and draft tube surges, and should be included in the design process, if not found to be negligible.

SMB 공정을 이용한 폐기 TNT와 RDX 혼합 용액의 분리 (Separation of Waste TNT and RDX Mixture Using SMB Process)

  • 최근 폐 탄약의 회수를 통한 고에너지 물질의 재활용 및 재사용에 대한 연구가 선진국을 중심으로 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 재활용 기술응용의 일환으로, 폐 탄약 처리 중 나오는 TNT와 RDX 혼합물을 모사이동층(SMB) 공정을 통해 효율적으로 분리하는 실험과 이에 대한 동적 모사를 수행하였다. SMB 공정의 운전 영역을 설정하기 위하여 혼합용액의 유속변화에 따른 각 물질의 체류시간을 HPLC로 측정하였으며, 모멘트 모델을 이용하여 흡착 컬럼에서 각 물질의 흡착평형을 분석하였다. 흡착 평형과 SMB 운전 삼각법을 통하여 4개의 운전 영역을 결정하였다. 결정된 운전 영역에서 아세토나이트릴과 물이 6:4와 1:1로 구성된 2가지 용매에 대해 SMB 공정을 이용한 분리 실험을 수행하였다. SMB 공정의 운전 조건 변화에 따른 순도, 회수율, 생산성, 용매소비량 등의 4가지 성능 지수를 평가하였다. 또한 SMB 공정에 대한 수학적 모델을 통하여 공정의 동적 모사를 수행하여 실험의 결과와 비교하였다. SMB 공정을 통해 100% 순도의 TNT와 RDX를 얻을 수 있었으며, 동적 모사 결과는 실험 결과와 잘 일치하여 공정 동적 거동 예측과 공정 설계에 적용할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Modeling, simulation and structural analysis of a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process

  • Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is an important chemical process that is widely used to produce valuable petrochemical products by cracking heavier components. However, many difficulties exist in modeling the FCC process due to its complexity. In this study, a dynamic process model of a FCC process is suggested and its structural observability is analyzed. In the process modeling, yield function for the kinetic model of the riser reactor was applied to explain the product distribution. Hydrodynamics, mass balance and energy balance equations of the riser reactor and the regenerator were used to complete the modeling. The process model was tested in steady-state simulation and dynamic simulation, which gives dynamic responses to the change of process variables. The result was compared with the measured data from operating plaint. In the structural analysis, the system was analyzed using the process model and the process design to identify the structural observability of the system. The reactor and regenerator unit in the system were divided into six nodes based on their functions and modeling relationship equations were built based on nodes and edges of the directed graph of the system. Output-set assignment algorithm was demonstrated on the occurrence matrix to find observable nodes and variables. Optimal locations for minimal addition of measurements could be found by completing the whole output-set assignment algorithm of the system. The result of this study can help predict the state more accurately and improve observability of a complex chemical process with minimal cost.

초음속 저온분사법에 의해 적층된 알루미늄 층의 재료 물성 (Material Properties of Thick Aluminum Coating Made by Cold Gas Dynamic Spray Deposition)

  • Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold-spray uses supersonic gas flow to carry metallic powders to the substrate. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but in this study macro scale deposition was conducted. Properties of aluminum layer by cold-spray deposition such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), modulus of elasticity. hardness, and electric conductivity were measured. The results showed that properties of aluminum layer by cold-spray deposition were different from properties of pure aluminum and aluminum alloy.

패턴 인식 기법을 이용한 저항 점 용접의 실시간 품질 판단 (Real Time Quality Assurance with a Pattern Recognition algorithm during Resistance Spot Welding)

  • Since resistance spot welding has become one of the most popular sheet metal fabrication processes, a strong emphasis is being put on the quality of the welds. Throughout the years many quality estimation systems have been developed by many researchers to ensure weld quality. In this study, the process variables, which were monitored in the primary circuit of the welding machine, are used to estimate the weld quality with Hopfield neural network. The primary dynamic resistance is vectorized and stored as five patterns in the network. As the welding is done, the dynamic resistance patterns are recognized and the quality is estimated with the proposed method. Due to the primary process variables, it is possible to utilize this algorithms as an in-process real time quality monitoring system.

  • The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is different from the normal power supply, and it is a nonlinear, multi-input, strong coupling, the complex dynamic system with large time delay. At present, many studies on the content of the fuel cell fuel cells focus on a static process, this paper analyzed in subsequent sections of the process of fuel cell dynamic response time of transition, and then it found the method to reduce the response time during the process of load change to ensure that the stability of output power.

미소가공을 위한 초정밀 밀링머신 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Precision Milling Machine Design for Micro Machining)

  • This paper presents the results of miniaturized micro milling machine tool development for micro precision machining process. Finite element analysis has been performed to know the relationship between design dimensional variables and structural stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, thermal aspects. Design optimization has been performed to optimize the design variables of micro machine tool to minimize the volume, weight and deformation of machine tool structure and to maximize the stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, and thermal characteristics. This study presents the assessment of the technology incentive for the minimization of machine tool in the quantitative context of static, dynamic stiffness, thermal resistance and thus the accuracy implications. This study can also be provided a basic knowledge for further research of micro factory development.

  • We performed the numerical study on the characteristics of the 3-D airflow and dynamic cross contamination in the photolithography process cleanroom. The nonunifurmity, the deflection angle and the global cross contamination were used for analyzing the characteristics and performances of cleanroom. From the numerical results, we knew that the airflow characteristics of the cleanrooms are largely affected by the porosity of panel and the adjustment of dampers and the global cross contamination varies with the location of source and the passage of time through the concentration ratio.

  • 본 연구는 중학교 학생들에게 닮은 삼각형의 대응변 사이에 성립하는 비례적 성질에 기초하여 함수를 작도할 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써 대수적 함수와 그것의 기하학적 성질에 관한 학생들의 직관을 촉진시키기 위한 것이다. 또한, 학생들이 선택한 작도 방법에 관한 정당화의 과정을 강조함으로써 연역적 추론능력을 향상시키고자 하였다. 이 예비 연구의 결과로서 학생들이 함수를 작도하는 과정에서 나타나는 사고 과정의 특징과 교사의 역할에 관해 기술하였다.
